Excellent review, Alex. Thank you for all the details describing the differences between these two models. I’m excited about the 2.0L Supra. I’m 69 and I have no need for any sports car with more than 250 hp, especially on city/suburban routes and such a lightweight car. I’m sure I can have lots of fun with this car, and the projected price of car in the $40s is very attractive too. Do I care that this model isn’t crazy enough? Hell no. I’d rather have the safety of this model over the 3.0L any day. Again, thank you for this review. It was extremely helpful.

they are just being lazy they could easily restrict it to1000-2000 preorders, just lazy in fact the upcoming frs/brz manual slightly modified or bmw's should easily work. heck even the corolla can be had with a manual, but not their sports car. the manual is about more than 0-60 launch control, it is about man/machine interaction and driving pleasure that no auto can come close too, and they should put a manual handbrake in there too, this is one sports car where it's not too fast so you can actually use all of it's power/handling at legal speeds, or most of it and never have to take it to the track.

IMO a non-turbo I6 would be a better engine choice for the low end Supra. I’d bet the cost would be similar, but the sound and driving feel would be better. Worse for EPA testing though. Not sure if removing the turbo from the B series engine would work well though since it was designed from the start with turbo charging in every variant. The old M52 2.8L in my E36 is such a great engine, and I’d imagine BMW could delivery something great in 2020 for NA fans.

I agree with Alex, this car looks better in person. I recall Savage Geese making the statement that with the windows down, the wind buffeting is so severe that it's a deal killer. For the money, the new Corvette C8 is superior in performance but then you won't get the same quality interior, refinement and build quality (panel gaps). Who would get this car? A well to do person that could afford a toy like this because it is simply a small European sports car ideal for short distances. Lease one of you can afford it.

Missing the manual. It is getting harder and harder to find manual in sportscars. Even Porsche only offers them in the Cayman/Boxter and the 911 S and Targa. The latter they have stopped building for 2020; why, who knows? Most of the fun with sports cars is the manual. Yes, the PDK's and paddles are fast, but what's the fun, if you can't throw the gear and use it to shape the driving behavior?

@@YusufGinnah C8 is an amazing car but midengine is brand new territory for GM, who has total shit service- notoriously the worst of all "american" manufacturers. in America, everyone and their mom has corvettes- they're very common here. once we get past this initial phase of the C8 being pricegouged and backordered, there will be many out there, just like all the other corvettes. C8 is probably the best bang for your buck overall sportscar out there- its the world's cheapest supercar... which is a good thing, I think, but could also be a bad thing, depending on how it proves out over time (quality issues, mass production, GM being GM). The Corvette is $20k more than a similarly equipped Supra... no one is buying an 1LT at 60k as it comes with absolutely nothing; people will be buying at least the 2LT for 68k. You want the performance suspension and dampers with electronic calibration and michellin pilot sport run flats, and better cooling? That's another $6k. The Supra already comes with all of that at $54k and now the Corvette is $74k. GM significantly strips down the Corvette to advertise a "low starting price" of $60k. That said, the Supra handles like a dream and competes with $100k Porsches (the Porsche is still a better sportscar though). A Supra will turn more heads than a corvette, at least here in the US where we see vettes every single day. I haven't driven a C8 yet, but the Supra feels much better than a C6 or C7.

@millefune4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a major part of German car "longevity," is that the richer owners can just throw money at the problems. The people I know (normal middle-class and lower folks) that saved and bought into the German car hype either have had to sell their cars, trade them in, or just drive a car with electrical issues and leaks. Toyota made Subaru add extra injectors that would intermittently wash the valves to prevent carbon build-up that plagues direct injection engines on the 86 and BRZ. I haven't heard anything about this BMW engine being given any Toyota ingenuity to keep it more reliable than any other unreliable German engine.

GM pulled out the big design guns, from what I’ve read and seen there aren’t any issues with the C7... Just maintain it (synthetic oil changes, etc.) and it will last forever. Conversely this new Supra is a BMW in sheep’s clothing ... yes their engines are great and reliable, its all the plastic crap and electronic shit that will bankrupt you faster than COVID 19... I know from experience i bought a high mileage 2013 X5 and within 8 LONG months i had $2,500 in repairs maintenance, front end work, leaking rear differential and frozen door lock. Traded that piece of crap in for my 2013 LExus ES350, best car I’ve ever owned... Now i never buy a NEW car (last one was 20 years ago, a 2000 VW Passat wagon, 5 speed manual) , so i would rather get a 2016 C7 Stingray with 1LT, 7 speed manual for about $32-$36k depending on mileage/condition. a low mileage (15k) in great condition will be in the upper 30’s, but this would be my choice ! So true, if you have the money who cares about reliability. That is why JLR is still in business. If it breaks just have dealer take care of it and get a loaner car. When lease is up, get a new car.

A turbocharged 2 liter 4 cylinder? That sounds like a perfect fit... ...for the 86. A few years from now when they discontinue their sports cars due to low sales, they’ll forget about these poor decisions. There’s a lot of technology and innovation. I worry the marketing and development folks or whoever may lose most of their potential customers chasing Porsche. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.

Porsche makes great cars. That said, I feel like they all have the same bland look they've had since time immemorial. Yeah, the 911 is a classic and I think holds that well, but visually the boxster/cayman are hard to get excited about. I understand that's their primary demographic, old guys who can afford and want their timeless, unchanging cars. Setting aside the fact that you need to drop 15-20k extra just to get a Porsche with some modern features you would have expected closer to the base price, they all look the same. Germans are very hard headed, but I think Porsche would do well to think about giving their individual vehicle lines more unique characterization instead of such subtle differences. Yes, I know they get some guy with a German accent spewing pages of the subtle nuisances on each model's visuals, but unless you're a hardcore Porsche fan, they all look the same.

çomeon Toyota, even the corolla has a great manual, not up to Honda's or Mazda's quality, but still very good. This is just ridiculous? Just make 10-20% total, there are manual manuals that can handel the 4 cyclinder from BMW, Honda, VW< Porsche, or custom made, or even an upgraded BRZ/FRS unit. Total fail. Aside from that I love it, it's just about $5-$8000 to expensive.

I don't mind that the Supra shares interior parts with BMW, but the choices that were made for the interior are a bit odd. The climate controls, seat controls, and steering wheel buttons are from a 2014 3 Series, but the infotainment is 2017 BMW, and the headlight buttons are very new and are found in the latest BMWs. It's has a BMW infotainment, with a sound system found in a Toyota (JBL). Toyota would like for us to call it a Toyota, but it doesn't have Toyota Safety Sense, or Android Auto and Amazon Alexa, which I doubt anyone uses to be fair. I do agree with Alex that this is probably the future of sports cars. No one buys them, so automakers have to do a partnership with another automaker to make one model.

So, the largest and most profitable auto manufacturer in the world paid BMW to make a new Supra who outsourced the manufacturing to Magna Steyr. Who’s Toyota going to pay to make the next MR2 or Celica-Chevy? And lil Mazda says they’ll make a new inline 6 on their own. Sounds like laziness from Toyota.
@carboydorifutoparty39764 жыл бұрын
They're making a i6 for 1 car which they said would've jumped it's price right over 100k. In mazdas case their making their i6 for more than one car compared to what Toyotas doing.

So, people are bitching about the current Supra that completely blows all previous iterations of the Supra and its Yamaha engine out of the water, because its heavily derived from a German platform? You're whining about something completely intangible and irrelevant; its an amazing car. You're just a negative side effect of modern society's toxic culture.
