KI’s tusk is one of the more interesting examples of the big weapon character, he has the same weaknesses of other big weapon characters but he also has a mechanic that counters sloppy punishes, When he swings his sword he will flash white for a split second and if the opponent attempts to hit tusk during the flash they will be opened up, it forces the opponent to respect the sword and also forces them to punish tusk at the end of a block string the same way everyone else is normally punished, it also doesn’t make it impossible to hit him on start up but it adds risk to it

He's a fighting game player, and along with a few others-- I was getting my ass handed to me all the time, as I just don't play a lot of fighting games. I was also testing characters and trying to find something I could both understand and use well. Then I picked May. I may have still been getting curb-stomped still, but I finally started learning how inputs worked and started getting a few wins and close matches. Since then I've been a hard-core May player, and picked up some nasty combinations that had my friends very confused. Except for one guy. Shout out to Vigs-- Bro reads us all like books. Knows my move before I even think it. Literally predicts our move choices before we begin inputs. Bro was helping me in a call and was calling out moves and plays with something I can only describe as precognition.

Of this archetype, Fiona from Arcana Heart is most memorable to me. This is a little girl with a big HEAVY sword. But the emphasis is no longer on size, but on weight of the sword. The consequence of this is that the moves are slow and with great inertia, and after some attacks Fiona falls to the ground with the sword. But all this is offset by the fact that most of the moves have hyperarmor, and this is visually explained not by the fact that Fiona is strong and withstands attacks, but by the fact that the sword is awesome heavy, and if you swing it, it will fall by inertia, even if Fiona has received damage.

I don't think this really counts as an "archetype," by FGC terms, anyway. It's more just a character design. That being said, yeah, it's the best. The main character in the fighting game I'm making has a bigass sword. I wanted to make an easy-to-learn character who is balanced between zoning and rushdown capabilities without being just another shoto
@typhoonbh5 ай бұрын
It’s probably more of a sub archetype that could fit into others, like glass cannons
@KoFkrai5 ай бұрын
I was about to get fully on board with the idea of the video, but almost immediately I feel like you're confusing character design with character archetype. Yes, when a zoner like ramlethal swings her swords slowly and controls the mid range with her long reach, the size of the weapon is very prominent. But she's a zoner at her core. She was designed with the big swings, setting traps and using her swords as projectiles as part of her toolkit as a zoner. That's her archetype. Cliff is a much different type of character. Visually, his design also emphasizes on his big sword just like ramlethal, but despite his design sharing one similarity of using a few big lumbering powerful swings, he was designed to rush you down and be good at mid range. In exchange for having better range than most rushdown characters, he gets a shitty health bar. But his archetype is rushdown. There are many characters who have large weapons that incorporate that visual trait into a unique trademark for their playstyles, but in the end I feel like all of those characters already fit into another fighting game character archetype instead of comparing and pooling together characters who work with different functions and can have wildly varied game feels into one category based on a common visual attribute. I don't mean to make this comment like I'm trying to debunk your whole video or anything, I just feel like the concept you pitched feels a little redundant. It was cool seeing you talk about characters with big weapons tho, so you have my like. :)

I believe the reason there isn't a specific name for this archetype is that... Well, this isn't exactly an archetype, more of a property you can add to an archetype, kind of like "big body". You can have a large weapon zoner, or a large weapon rushdown, for example. The large weapon isn't necessarily the central point of the playstyle, more like a twist on how you go about your main archetype's goals. That said, I fully agree we need more little people with comically large weapons

My favorite fighting style was shadow fight. Since it was based on more realistic mouvement, you will swing your weapon logically and plan you hit. The reason why big weapon tend to be bad in that game is because you are realisticly slow and its super hard to land a hit that way compared to the spear wich is one of the best weapon because of big range for super fast attack speed.

Big Weapon Character Starter Kit: Big range, extended hitbox on a lot of moves but really pathetic stumpy range on others in key areas to create highs and lows in neutral. Meaty, nasty punish moves that cover half of the screen but have huge penalties on block or whiff. Humongord crazy damage on even basic strings, but low HP and vulnerable to blockstrings and being rushed down themselves. Anti-Air has some whacky and very precise unreliable hitbox even though they could probably just swing their weapon in an arc, but they won't. Guard breaks/unblockables out the ass. Move that looks like it should have hyper armor/guard frames but it doesn't. Move that looks like it shouldn't have hyper armor/guard frames but it does. Your walk speed and backdash is really bad but your sprint/forward dash is good. Tiny, stubby little low kick that's somehow the most important move in their entire kit. Surprise command grab that comes out of nowhere and does more work than most grapplers. Charge inputs/charged inputs. Self-damage gimmicks.
