Odyssey - Ancient History Documentaries

Күн бұрын

Legends surround this tiny island off Cornwall's south coast, including a visit by Christ himself, brought here by Joseph of Arimathea from distant Glastonbury. The team are out to discover the truth behind the myths. Could this island have witnessed the birth of Christianity in Britain? They are hampered by the tide, which limits the time allowed for digging. Previous digs have linked the now-vanished St. Michael's Chapel on the hill to the Celtic dark ages following the Roman occupation.
Odyssey is your journey into the world of Ancient History; from the dawn of Mesopotamia to the fall of Rome. We'll be bringing you only the best documentaries that journey into the mysteries and ruins of worlds long lost.

Those stones with holes in them served a multitude of purposes from door closers to beam balance counterweights for scales. Only the large ones served as anchors--the others were often counterweights for well sweeps, window or shutter counterbalances and openers, you name it. Some were even used as sinkers for long line fishing, with a bladder or wooden float. What they do indicate is early settlement--but not really useful to date anything because they have been used throughout history and in some remote areas of the world they are still in use today. .

As a firstborn, Jesus would have had a bit more freedom than his younger siblings as the story about his Temple experience at age 12 demonstrates. He was not under constant supervision by Mary and Joseph. But, the idea that he took Mediterranean journeys as a child is rather unlikely. Just can't see Mary asking a random tin merchant "Hey, can you watch Jesus for me for a few months?" As a young man, his carpentry skills would have been needed for the economics of the household. He would also have been expected to help with the younger children. He would have been responsible for his mother also, after Joseph's death- in essence, his life was filled with duty. It's a nice thought to think about him playing anywhere, though.

@Noneof Yourbusiness There's actually more evidence for the historical Jesus than any other ancient historical figure. Multiple Roman and Jewish authors like Tacitus, Pliny, Josephus, Mara-Bar Serapion, and many others mention his existence, and in comparison to most other ancient historicial figures (Alexander the Great or Socrates for example), Jesus is one of, if not the best documented person in ancient history. I say this as a non-Christian by the way.

@Noneof Yourbusiness The difference is that these writers, most of which are not Christians, are describing Jesus in a histocial manor, in books of history. Hercules, on the other hand, is described in mythological texts which are written by pagan historians. If you can show me a list of Christian and Jewish historians who describe Hercules as if he were a real historical figure, I will gladly retract my statement.

I find videos like this very interesting and educational. I hope you post more videos about this dig. Could you talk about the ancient tin mines in Glastonbury? Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea was involved in the tin trade. Something made him wealthy. Apparently tin was valuable in ancient times, probably to make bronze (tin mixed with copper). Also, could you comment on the Nebra sky disc? Analysis of the gold and bronze in this object shows these metals (the tin in the bronze) comes from Cornwall.

I have an interesting book called “St. Joseph of Arimathea at Glastonbury” or “The Apostolic Church of Britain” by the Rev. Lionel Smithett Lewis. 1922. The book contains references to places and dates that Jesus and his mother Mary resided near Glastonbury. His Uncle Joseph of Arimathea was a tin merchant and travelled back and forth from the Mediterranean to the isles. Jesus was supposed to have been tutored by the same people that knew how to utilize the stone circle known as Stonehenge. His name was not Jesus. His name is Yashua.

Just because it is not in the Bible, does not mean it did not happen. There is much which was hidden, more that has been lied about (see the Council of Niceae) and more we have yet to discover.

I don’t consider myself a very religious man. And at the same time I don’t really want to come off as being a bit of a non-believer here. But the idea of Jesus Christ trotting along those beaches as a boy I’m sorry but I just don’t believe it. I mean we have to remember this was an era where in many parts of the world most people rarely ventured outside their own villages. So I would think that Jesus would’ve likely have stayed up in Israel. I mean maybe he would’ve gone up into pre-Christian Europe or some thing every now and again but I don’t think he would’ve gone as far as what would become the united kingdom. Now I’m not an atheist. But I think personally though out of all of this that is the one thing that just doesn’t seem to make sense to me. Overall though the rest of the story and such is actually quite fascinating. Absolutely loved the show. I was initially very excited when I heard that they were going to make even more however my excitement quickly disappeared when I learned that Tony doesn’t look like he’ll be returning.

Saint Michael, the saint that no one knows, until now. Saint Michael was the brother of saint Gildas, saint Maelok, saint Aneirin etc etc etc. He was the son of King Caddow of Strathclyde and inherited the kingdom on the death of Caddow. Caddow was likely the first Christian king of anywhere in Britain. Saint Michael is known to us today as Rhydderch Hael where Rhydderch is Rhu-Drack or red dragon and Hael is the abbreviation of Michael. Michael means he who is like god, therefore Hael is 'the God' as in Hail Caesar and Hail Hitler, meaning the god Hail Caesar. Ironically used by Hitler not knowing of its paleo hebrew origins.
