If someone is going through a hard experience like loss or grieving or post traumatic stress, some people handle those things by seeking out information and listening to videos like these. Other people avoid these kinds of things because they are toxic to their mind at that point. And you aren’t locked into either coping “category”, you can always decide when to watch content like this, when you’re ready! (And it’s absolutely understandable and valid if you’re never able to watch videos like these! When I am teaching my kids about “stranger danger” , this is a tragic story I tell them about. You have to be careful, even if people aren’t “strangers”. Our world is a sad place sometimes. God bless Maddie and her loved ones.

Be careful with that though, abductions and abuse usually come from inside the family, not from strangers. That campaign made more harm than good preventing child abductions. I'm currently going to college to get my Psychology degree. Even psychologists believe that the Polygraph test is a horrible tool to use because people's brains are just wired differently. Someone with horrible anxiety can fail a test, and someone with a disorder like antisocial personality disorder can possibly pass it easily.

In fact men have more of a chance of being raped then they do being accused of rape 🤦‍♀️ rates for false allegations of sexual violence are no higher than those reported in other categories of crime. The worry I felt when my brother went out to do stuff when he was a kid is unreal...Once when we were walking out (For the life of me, I can't remember why it was just the 2 of us), a guy ( early to mid 20's at the time, I guess) I remember my mom talking to in passing came up and gave my brother a hug so tight he literally lifted him off the ground, (mind you, my brother was around 7 at the time, and I was around 11, 12) and it freaked me out so much thinking that this guy was going to run off with my brother and hurt him. That older sibling instincts went off the charts and I immediately started thinking of ways to get help and still track my brother when that guy let him go, said bye and walked off. I still don't know why a guy would just hug a kid he's seen only once the way he did. People always talk about a parents instinct to protect their kids but almost always overlook an older siblings instinct to protect the younger ones, even if it means getting hurt themselves.

My neighbor, a retired widower asks my mom and me over when he hangs out on his porch. Almost every house on our block has kids. He had adult kids and grandchildren but they don't live close. He says he likes to hear the hustle and bustle of the kids while he reads or listens to a game or putters in the yard but is worried what people might think if it's just him alone. It makes him feel involved and less lonely to help watch the kids. This year people are more comfortable but the first year? It's sad but kind of necessary to be like this. I see both sides. And yeah, no one bats an eye about me. 🤷

They phrased it as if his dad never came home Josh would have gotten help and Maddie would be alive. The documentary focused a lot on his abuse. His mom even talked about it and said if her husband didn't come home she thinks Maddie would be alive.

Hence the name. There’s all kinds of things that are called by different names in the US than they are in England and Australia. Like don’t Australians call flip flops thongs? In the US that’s skimpy underwear. And then there’s cookie/biscuit and French fries/chips. I don’t think it’s necessarily simpler to decide to call something by a different name. My neighbor once took my daughter out of my yard without my knowledge and I was inside for just a minute getting her a drink while she played in our gated yard. She was 5 and this was a woman neighbor but she had an alcoholic boyfriend who lived with her so my daughter wasn’t allowed over there. Her granddaughter I guess was visiting and that was her excuse but as soon as I realized Sof wasn’t in my yard my ran and jumped the fence and start looking both ways of my street hoping to see anything. I scream her name and run toward the main road thinking if someone took her they’d head for the main road and I’m also on my cell calling my husband like hey did u come take sof and I just didn’t hear you and when he said no my heart sank! A woman across my street said she saw a woman with a little girl walk in that house and she pointed to my neighbor and I ran up and tried to open their door, locked so I bang as hard as I can and they acted like I was just some crazy bitch upset for nothing 🤯 never again! I was lucky enough for my daughter to come back safe and sound. But living thru that panic was the scariest time of my life.

Oh somebody finally covered this story! I recommended it to another KZbinr a while ago, but it was still jarring seeing Maddie’s face right now as I scrolled through KZbin. I went to school with Maddie. She was in 2nd grade (or maybe 3rd) while I was in 1st. Although she was a grade above me, my neighbor/close friend was in her class and a classmate/close friend of mine was her neighbor/close friend (I hope that made sense). It was incredibly traumatizing for everyone at our elementary school when this happened. Looking back, it’s so odd remembering the conversations 1st and 2nd graders were having about murder, not to mention murder of a close friend and fellow child. Adults obviously tried to speak with us about it a certain way, but I distinctly remember the conversations we as children had alone trying to make sense of it. I remember us referring to her neighbor/murderer (who my classmate also knew) as her “playmate.” We’d say “her playmate did it.” There were facts of the case we got wrong that I didn’t even realize we’d gotten wrong until adulthood because they had just become facts in my head from these childhood discussions. But I distinctly remember the innocence in how we spoke of it; “her playmate hit her in the head with a ball by accident and got scared.” He had also gone to our school, making everything very close to home and deeply confusing. I also remember my classmate/friend, who I mentioned was Maddie’s close friend and neighbor, tearing up as she talked about just trying to go home but news reporters stopping her and harassing her with questions. She said she was crying really hard while answering their questions and just wanted to go home but they wouldn’t leave her alone, and she couldn’t understand why adults were doing that to her when they obviously could tell she was so sad. That was very hard to comprehend as a 1st grader. I appreciate this is getting attention because Maddie, an all around nice, bright, and kind girl, deserves the mourning. Our whole city was shook by this, it was on every TV. In fact, my parents would frequently pull us out of restaurants if they had it playing on the news and we’d go to a different one. I appreciate my parents trying to protect us from it but it was impossible. I’ve heard that the murderer has asked for forgiveness and wants to be released from jail. From someone with a connection to the victim and the story, I firmly believe he does not deserve it. No forgiveness. Not only did he take Maddie away, but he traumatized hundreds of children in the process. Parents too. He made the world feel unsafe for us and that’s not something I’m willing to forgive. Of course, the biggest victim in this is Maddie, followed by her family, but Maddie’s friends and classmates were also victims too. If your child goes through a trauma like this, I recommend you talking to them about it often and in-depth. I respect my parents and my friends parents’ desire to try and “protect” us from this by avoiding talking about it and turning the TV off when it came on the news, but the reality is any spare moment alone, your kid will be talking about this with their friends and if you don’t guide the conversation for them, their confusion will be even more traumatizing for them. Just a short PSA from someone who experienced this. RIP to Maddie, a girl who continues to be greatly missed. EDIT: I hadn’t watched the video yet when I wrote this and I’m very concerned by the mention of this being on Tik Tok. Can anyone explain it to me? I really hope they’re not insulting Maddie’s memory or making light of this.

The reason why you found out so much is you were allowed to go to school. I was homeschooled by my legal guardian on duke road three streets away which basically meant when you were at school I had to figure out my school work on my own or face a "teacher" who would scream at me for being stupid. I vaguely remember anything about it at the time besides I was only allowed to go in the front yard and the backyard even when I wanted to ride my bike. My only freind was a longhaired tuxedo cat named Sebastian who was subsequently shreaded by one of the neighbors adopt a greyhound s after one of Kathy Dennis's piano students let him out. She had Sebastian declawed so he couldn't even defend himself. We got a call the next day she and I went to get him and when she saw him she was going to leave my best friend mangled in the gutter. I at 9 had to be the grown-up and pick up my freind and put in in a garbage bag and bring him home. But I had no freedom and no one would tell me anything besides because I say so until I was 13.

Polygraphs rely on your body’s reactions. If he was upset that Maddie was missing, as I’m sure he was, that’s what the test picked up on. “Do you know what happened to Maddie?” I’m sure that question would upset anyone. Shannon's right. A sociopath he may be, but he's also a 14 year-old boy with little life experience. He must have worked out a plan of disposing her body on the night of the murder, but he didn't factor in the speed at which the search would start and intensify, leaving him with no choice but to wait it out the way he did

A police officer that my family knew always said that: *"If a child goes missing, after 24hrs we're looking for a body."* because as you said the chances of finding a missing child goes down dramatically as the hours go by. I feel so horrible for that little girl, I hope she has peace in the afterlife.
