Your Dad deserves so much respect. All the love, labor & thought he puts into the chateau. All the while, he’s so humble. What a grand man!

I can't help but think that the poor souls who created those steps into the cottage actually put it into it's original place exactly the same way as you did. Father, son, and family. Just lovely how history can repeat itself well. Do more painting Michael! I paint or watercolor too, for over 50 years now. It makes me more tolerant, to paint a bit each day and see where it needs to go the next day......maybe in a different frame.....or frame of mind. Thanks to you all and best wishes to you and yours.

As others have said, don't remove the paper backing on the insulation. It's surprisingly important as a vapor barrier. I had to insulate under the floorboards of our store, and accidentally put the paper on the outside rather than inside, and when I had to pull down one section, there was a literal puddle of water up inside it! You don't realize how much condensation occurs in a building unless you make a mistake like that, so keep your vapor barrier intact and facing in. :-)

Mr Petherick swings a big hammer! That's the biggest mallet I've ever seen. We put in granite steps by hand, and to give folks an idea of the weight, a foot square, six inches thick of granite weighs 100 pounds. Those are mighty heavy blocks to lift by hand! We used crowbars (6-foot breaker bars) and wedged ours into place, but it took four of us, two breaker bars, and a lot of sweat. Ours are four-foot long but not as thick as the ones these boys are moving. Respect to the whole team!

Imagine in 200 years when the histroans tells the story of the castle. "There was a brother called Michael who took on the cottage and turned into what we can see today. As you can see here, the Aga stove was one of his earlier projects..." So cool! You are all part of history now, "branding your name" in the houses walls and renovations. Exciting!

You’re right Michael that is a huge bedroom. You could have your king size bed up at the gable end and down on the other side of the pair of posts you could have a little writing / sitting area with a wardrobe . Maybe even put the desk at the edge of the stairwell and that way you wouldn’t need to put a rail around there

Just a quick comment, by opening up the arch above the windows you will trick the eye into believing it is taller than it is. It will also give interest to the ceiling . I vote for opening up that little area. Looking sharp, after pics really give you an idea of how large it will look when finished. Thanks for sharing.
