It adds to the awesomeness of her speech that the actress Mira Furlan, a Croatian, saw the destruction of her Croatian homeland during the early 90s Yugoslavian civil war, that she saw the United Nations doing nothing, hiding behind soulless words, talking with empty hearts. She was furious about this fact and she added her personal feelings about her life and the situation of her original home country to her playing her character of Delenn of Mir. No other actress of this time could have done this scene so perfect, so strong, so convincing than Mira Furlan. And I highly doubt that any present day actress could do it. So, better to just revamp the space battle CGI's a bit. But a full reboot of that masterfully crafted series? Thanks but no thanks. BTW: Her slight Croatian accent and some little grammatically errors perfectly adds to the "alieness" of Delenn of Mir.

It's ironic that so many countries will stand before the UN, begging for help for some reason or another, and then when it does act, they blame those countries taking part in the UN mission for all their past problems.

i heard jms said that for mira alot of this scene came from her experience of the war in the balkans that raged while others (especially powerful european neighbours) did nothing since "the problems of others aren't our our own". That makes this scene even more intense for me, the reality of her rage, just picture those guys as modern day politicians and it still makes sense

the balkans have been shafted in a huge amount of ways. I heard back in the day before the Nazis Bismark was warning the Germans not to get involved in the balkans. Saying that to go there would basically destroy Germany. turns out yeah nail on the head. Im not a historian but i remember people in albania being nice during the day and then at night women would walk hand in hand. Being male i thought this was sexy until i asked y they did tat. Turns out (at the time) women in albania would go in packs to prevent "militia" from raping them. that was 15 years ago but yeah pretty sad
@SantomPh

@@thryce82 Bismark noted that if a major war was to happen it would be due to "some trifling incident in the Balkans". In his time the Balkans were a scene of shifting borders, stubborn Austro-Hungarian repression and revolts left and right. He had stabilized northern Europe for the most part but the south was generally a mess with the Ottomans retreating, leaving behind proud but poor nations.

I'd wondered whether the problems and events of the 1990s had any affect on the scripts of B5, or if he'd had most of the outline set up before that. I think JMS said it was five years just to get a studio to agree to produce his show.

@Justin Croonenberghs That's only true if we assume they use a simple majority for their decision making process. I always got the implication that the grey council used a two-thirds majority rule. In which case, the old council still screwed the worker caste because they alone of all three were in the position of being forced to choose sides against their own interests, regardless of who they allied with. With the 5-2-2 setup, they still need the cooperation of at least one other caste in order for the council to function, but it's the worker caste who ultimately holds the tie-breaking vote in the event of an impasse

2:32 That staff was a real problem. It was originally built a little too strong and there are some great blooper reels of Delen trying to break it over several takes. The crew finally weakened the staff a bit and you can see a quick jump cut where she breaks the staff in a scene that was probably meant to be one long take originally. :)

You know what I love about Delenn? She was kind, she was patient, she was understanding. She was the sort of person who, when told that the man who fired the first shot in the Earth-Minbari war was so wracked with guilt that he believed he was King Arthur and needed someone to take away the symbol of his pain, would do it and take it completely seriously. But you did not ever, under any circumstances, want to make her mad. Because she would wreck you

It's worth considering that Babylon 5 always dealt with the consequences of choices, and those consequences are weighty and realistic. Even here, there are consequences. While Delenn won a victory for her cause here, and did succeed in gaining war production materials, her big damn angry hero moment had a cost. The warrior caste later took revenge on Minbari society and nearly destroyed their own homeworld. A big theme in B5 was that doing the right thing is difficult and will always result in some form of loss, but it has to be done.
@sandal_thong8631
@sandal_thong8631 3 ай бұрын
You are correct. I was looking for a comment saying this, before I started a thread. They were so upset at being made to surrender to Earth with no explanation from the Religious Caste, that they didn't want to do anything else they said. In another video I think Delenn talks about the Warrior Caste wanting an enemy they were sure they could defeat, and the Shadows were not that. As a result, the Warrior Caste wanted to purge the Religious Caste from their areas, casting them out into the cold. That inspired one Religious Caste member to seek alliance with the Drakh who were raiding border regions, and had been aligned with the Shadows. Their hatred for Sheridan and Delenn (and Londo) was such that the latter were never properly motivated to find a place for them in the new order, or a world where they could exist undisturbed while they find out who they are, what they want and where they are going. Today we know about exo-planets and even rogue planets. With hundreds of billions of stars in the galaxy, they probably could have found a place to be alone for awhile. But if they could find a huge rogue planet with a moon/planet around it heated by tidal forces (like moons of Jupiter), that could be the kind of Shadow planet that might never be observed or explored. Even Za'ha'dum orbited a star, I believe.

Delenn repeats phrases that we first saw her speak when she took her place on the Council: I am grey I stand between the candle and the star We are grey We stand between the darkness and the light I assume this is a sacred vow or oath that each member takes upon joining the Council. Here she is throwing it back at them. It is an idea they have all sworn themselves to, but now the warrior caste is failing to step up to the responsibility they have promised themselves to for a thousand years. It is one thing to believe that some prophecy will come to pass in the future. Here the warrior caste has shown that they can't accept the prophecy being fulfilled right in front of them. I don't remember noticing this before, but when the 5 members(3 worker caste, 2 religious) of the Council leave, one of the warrior caste reaches out in an effort to stop the last one. Perhaps if a majority of the Council, 5 out of 9, remains, the Council is still intact. The last departing member pushes off the warrior's hand and leaves. In their bid to take control of the Council, the warrior caste has destroyed the very thing they had hoped to control and lead. It was perhaps their birthright to have been in the forefront in the war against the Shadows, but now that position and honor will fall to the religious caste, and especially to the Rangers.

I didn’t notice before, but at the end of the video one of the council members who remained (presumably warrior caste or an outlier among the worker or religious caste, as I counted 5 following Delenn instead of 6) tried to hold out a hand to stop one of the departing council members, only for their hands to be lightly pushed away. Little details like that which make seeing this episode over and over again worth it. These weren’t actually faceless overseers, but Minbari who had worked together for decades and had once been of a single voice. Now they’re splitting apart, an event which inevitably rocks the foundations of their entire civilization. And it all begins with something as minor as a beseeching hand being pushed aside between friends.

Neroon replaced Delenn on the council. This gave the Warrior caste 4 councilors, the Worker caste 3 councilors, and the Religious caste 2 councilors. The 5 who followed Delenn were the Worker and Religious caste councilors. The ones who remained were Warrior caste. The camera shows 3, but there would be 1 more off camera. It is likely that a Warrior caste councilor was reaching out to a friendly Worker caste councilor, in an attempt to keep that councilor from solidifying the Worker caste position against the Warriors.

Another nice thing about this scene is it subtly illustrates how the Minbari were on the way to evolving into the Vorlons - they were after all the "chosen" younger race of the Vorlons coming out of the previous war. They were judged to be the most like them - a civilization that evolved on a world of structured crystal that valued order, obedience, dispassion, and adherence. Since the Vorlons appear alien and unknowable their motivations would be mysterious to most. Using the Minbari as a more relatable version of them is an examination of what really drove the Vorlons: arrogance and inflated self-regard. One might even hypothesize that when Sinclair became Valen and created prophesies, he had understood enough at that point to guess at what was really going on with the Vorlons. And he used his unique position to seed the Minbari breaking away from the path they'd been placed on by breaking the Grey Council.

There were other races or groups that had been involved 1000 years ago. The Techno-Mages, it's said were seekers of secrets and followers of the Shadows. But when they wanted out, they became extinct, but their ideas and order were passed on to select members of other races. Soul Hunters look like a race that might have once followed the Vorlons. Capturing souls of exceptional individuals seems very much like what the Vorlons did with Sinclair/Valen and Sheridan. Maybe they were imitating them?

This was Delenn at her most powerful. She toppled her own government to save her people, then later was willing to give her life to create a new and better government.

Delenn was incredible. One of the best moments in sci-fi - in my opinion. So much for women being "weaker" than men - NOT. (Yeah - I'm a guy too BTW). I always liked the depth of the characters - the lines between good and evil were crossed by both the good guys and the bad.

I never understood why the grey council wear hoods and conceal thier faces like that. It's not like they have secret identities, they all know who each other is.

No each cast has 3. Delenn was one of the Religious cast. It was a worker cast who pulled away from the warrior cast.

Your wrong, they use to only three but when Delenn was removed from the council, she was replaced by Neroon, a warrior given the warrior caste a majority, with 4 members, while the workers had 3 and teh religious had 2

I dont think so. The Shadows would most likey have not attacked Minbar. The Shadow Wars was not about destruction, or wiping out all the races, it was about ideals. If the Vorlons/Shadows destroyed EVERY race that opposed them after each of these wars, then the Drahk and he Narn would have been wiped out long ago. Also, of ALL the races in the galaxy, the Minbari would have put up on hell of a fight. They have been allies to the Vorlons for over a thousand years remember.

It got to that point at the peak of the war in season 4. They started taking out the planet killers and started wiping out entire planets. They nearly obliterated Centuari prime. But Coriana 6 was going down at that exact moment. If they were going to hit the core of Shadow Support in the Centuari? (earth was another but that was a different story) You bet your ass Minbar was on the Shadow Hitlist.
