The Cranberries music is like being privy to Dolores' diary. She had a lot of trouble singing this live after the death of her father. Had to get the audience to sing the "my father" part sometimes. You can literally follow Dolores' life from the first album to the last (and her two solo albums). The last album released after her death is a hard listen hearing what she was going through. I love how Irish the band are. Noel (guitarist) plays and produces such an Irish feel.

It is so fun for old farts like me to watch you youngsters enjoy the songs of my youth. Keep it up! You are wonderful!

I feel a tingle up the back of my neck whenever I hear this song. This album was the musical centerpiece of our household back when we were students, and every track was thrashed repeatedly day and night. Great memories of magical times and the nostalgia of the song is now heightened by the years that have passed since this song first captivated us all. I admit to shedding a tear the day Dolores died.

I love this song, it describes so much how I felt as a child, and even as a young adult... "does anyone care"... I used to play the first two Cranberries CD's (cassette tapes actually I think Lol ) constantly... there is just something about this band, I love them.

It's normal for most people to sound American when they're singing (they're not putting on an American accent) it's just a natural thing that happens when singing, syllables are lengthened, air flow is increased, articulation is less precise. Thus we get a more generic, neutralised accent that happens to share features with American varieties of English. It's rare for people to actually hear a persons real accent when they sing. Another reason why Dolores was so special.

I love this song. I think it's my favorite of theirs. It's lyrically simple but that makes it more poignant to me. It really moves me emotionally. And now that I've finally been to Ireland, the pub scenes make the video even more affecting. I never had any idea how musical Irish culture is. I've only ever experienced anything similar in New Orleans, but New Orleans clubs are more entertainment based, whereas in Irish pubs, the amazing music is an accompaniment to conversation.

The cranberries infuse traditional Irish inflections into their vocals. They are very the influenced by a type of Traditional music called Sean -Nós. You’ll hear it in a lot of Irish music that might be called rock, pop or Celtic Pop. Since you’ve listen to Zombie and Linger you know what those inflections are it’s almost like a cry. Sinead O’Connor or The Corrs are influenced by traditional Irish singing. Most Irish bands use their Irish accent when they’re singing. Back in the day most pop bands try to sing with an American accent. Dolores O’Riordan is just an amazing vocalist she is so missed. Sean- nós was originally sung in Irish. But the Irish adapted to the colonizer language of English. But most of these bands include Irish language songs

Yeah, the last couple generations only think of Ireland after their economy took off in the mid 90’s. Before that it was a pretty devastated place. Add in all the years of IRA & UDF bombings/fighting. It was bleak.

The song is beautiful, but it is a song about incest that occured when she was a child. during a time that it was more a hidden acceptance. The therapy was getting it off her chest letting her parents know how it affected her through her song. Lyrics posted does not exactly match all the words she was really saying. My father, my father he liked me and he lied me is the true words, but posted he liked me twice in a row. Her unhappiness was when she was young and knowone cared about what happened behind closed doors. The game her father played with her and he took her and the many others like her that it happened to as well. Many will never know the real meaning, but the message was sent and received by those involved and some affected by the same circumstances.

Dolores' father is not guilty of what happened to her. I read somewhere that her parents worked outside of town and they had some family friend "take care of the kids", that's who hurt her. She had stated that she was scared to go to her father's funeral because she knew that that person would be there and try to talk to her.

On the topic of foreign singers retaining their accents, I'd like to throw out David Bowie. You guys probably know a dozen songs each whether you can name them or not, but I'd like to recommend one you're less likely to know: Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud. It's very English. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYSnnmqgmNiNoq8
