Could you also mention the fact that the children with no names emphasises the fact that the poor society are over looked and all seen as the same

This is a short extract of an essay I wrote. It honestly don't think it is that good and I wanted to get some advice. Throughout A Christmas Carol, the Cratchits are used as a symbol of the lower classes of Victorian society. They act as the antithesis of Scrooge, emotionally rich with a loving family but poor financially. This contrast is used to show the importance of family rather than money and also contrasts Scrooge’s Malthusian beliefs and overall distaste for the poor which lays the foundation for his development into a man who respects and empathises with the lower classes. The Cratchits also play a crucial role in causing this change which helps to convey the message of social responsibility. In the extract, Dickens uses the Cratchits as a representation of the lower classes of Victorian society but it is clear that the family isn’t letting their own lack of money deter them from enjoying Christmas. Lines such as “a custard cup without a handle” explicitly show that the family is poor but there are also many implicit suggestions that they are still grateful for what they have despite their poverty. One example would be the line “These held the hot stuff from the jug, however, as well as golden goblets would have done.” The implication here is that the family sees no need for expensive items given that the cheaper ones they can afford work just as well. The phrase “golden goblets” is emphasised by the alliteration of the “g” sound and also the assonance of the “ɒ” sound. Dickens use of these techniques draws the reader’s attention to the expensive items which emphasise how the Cratchits feel about their cheaper alternatives. We as the reader know that the Cratchits don’t actually own golden goblets but the fact that the words are emphasised in turn intensifies the Cratchit’s gratitude for what they have. Furthermore, the Volta “however” shifts the focus away from the Cratchit’s poverty and draws the readers focus to their gratitude for what they do have. Dickens’ intention in this extract is likely to show that you should be thankful for what you have no matter how small it is. The Cratchits don’t have much but they are presented as being grateful for what they do have. Another key message in the extract is that family is more important than money. The Cratchits are poor but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying Christmas. Many lines in the extract create a positive atmosphere that distracts from the fact that the family lives in Poverty. One example would be, “the chestnuts on the fire sputtered and cracked noisily.” The use of onomatopoeia and the harsh dental sounds, “t” and “d”, coupled with the sharp plosive sounds, “p” and “k”, immerse the reader in the scene and create a feeling of warmth and cosiness. As well as this, the line “Bob served it with beaming looks,” creates an ambience of positivity. The verb “beaming” suggest that Bob Cratchit is radiating his positive emotions. It also links to the fire, which is filling the room with warmth, implying that his “beaming looks” are filling the room with positivity. The scene feels warm and happy and, despite the Cratchits struggles due to poverty, they are still able to enjoy themselves. This conveys Dickens’ message of family being greater than money as he chooses to focus on the Cratchits’ happiness rather than their struggles.

Hi Mr Bruff, This question is unrelated to this video but do are students still tested on 'Love and Relationships' poems or just 'Power and Conflict'? Also, does the school usually choose one of these for us? Thanks.
@mrbruff
@mrbruff 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, students in different schools study different clusters. Some do 'Power and Conflict' while others do 'Love and Relationships'. And yes, each school decides which cluster its students will study.
