Such a small world it is, Jim contacted me after he heard about our record drive to swap Cannonball stories and I found out that he used to be my dentist's business partner. He is an awesome guy and this sounded like an epic trip. It was an honor to pour through his documents and pictures from the event. He did 1985 as well. I will cut that story together in the next couple weeks.

Big problem in germany.. when you go 220 kph or so for longer periods of time and then having to slow down for a construction site in which the limit is 80 kph, its hard to not walk it up to over 100 again (at which the fines get unpleasent). Cant imagine the stress of constantly checking for police while going over 200 kph..
@jjjr86646 жыл бұрын
@@warummussmeinnameangegeben6502 Same in Texas, fines doubled in construction zones. Double the speed limit is jail time..30mph over is hefty. Some cops are cool (doing 110+mph in a 55mph zone, a Farm Road.. No traffic ever) he ticketed me at 75mph. I did get a lecture.

Had a similar experience after a race, pegged the speedometer at 165, car still accelerating. Shut the car down and thought I was going under 70 but I was still doing 90! Tbh that car made 120 feel like 60 anyways. I remember just being completely focused on the road ahead.

I ran this event in 1984 as Team Banzai in a Mazda 626 diesel. We met the Porsche 930 owner and he had the car towed up from Texas. He has an aluminum briefcase with 5 different driver's licenses and $10K in cash to pay his tickets. He was using a license showing him as a doctor from Mexico City when he started out. It was a fantastic event with far too many great stories to list here. We had a great time and never got a ticket in the three One Laps that we ran. We ran with Team Panzer, Black Glass which was the 'vette and Otto who had the BMW. All great guys and I miss those fun days of my youth.! So great to see this video.

I co-drove the PRDA van and had no problems with the law. Mainly because we were running at the front of the pack, we couldn’t run that fast, and our fuel cell gave us an 850 mile range, so we didn’t meet up with many competitors. The biggest problem was trying to stay awake after the Portofino rest stop along with being stuck in a van with 2 other guys for four days with no shower. The second half of the event was a killer.

My daughter just sent me this link, about 6 years late. We were in the white Caddy that spent most of the event driving alongside Jim in his 944, the insane guys in the diesel Mazda 626, C&D editors William Jeanes and Steven Smith, and a turbo Dodge. There were 5 in our little convoy and wow, the stories. Jim tells some of them here, but the list goes on and on. I have been telling many of them for 40 years now so it's good to see that I remember them as they happened. I did run One Lap several other times in the 80s, but none were as much fun as '84. One detail, Nascar on Fox legend Mike Joy was the official starter at the Lock, Stock & Barrel in Darien. After the jello wrestlers...

I am 34 now, so I remember in the 90s, when I was still in school, the era of the magazines, before the internet. I kind of miss it, there were a couple TV shows, like Top Gear or 5th Gear type, and the rest were magazines. Especially where I live in Europe, in the 90s we were not part of the European Union yet, and I remember reading about tires in the magazine articles, like how much water these good year aquatreads were throwing out at 100km/h per 1sec, and all this things about the independent suspension in the rear, which most of the cars we had at the time did not have, and I knew much more than most adults around me... I just get a bit nostalgic, it is so easy to watch 100 reviews for a popular car online today.

I remember reading Jean Lindamood's (now Jean Jennings) article in Car & Driver that year, her account of spending a week in that van with Walker Evans and Parnelli Jones.IIRC correctly the goal was to be the closest match to Yate's odometer mileage on the 'sighting lap' he did with his wife. Evans/Jones/Lindamood totally overthought the entire thing by driving the absolute minimum number of miles, only getting gas on the right side of the highway whenever possible, etc. At the end they realized Yates just drove wherever he wanted on both sides during his original trip, as he didn't really care about the final number, lol.

It's amazing how low an average is when you have to be slowing down for traffic and such. I drove from Nebraska to DC in January and was booking it the whole time, 1MPH under reckless in states that assign a specific MPH number to reckless driving, and hitting the limiter (132mph) in the states that didn't have those laws. At the end of the 1200 mile journey, and having passed literally every single vehicle on the road, no one ever going faster than me, I was shocked when according to the car I only averaged 79MPH.
