It seems like a good combination of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" and "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" would've been Peter going to visit a sick child after Gwen's death and trying to be the hero the kid expects him to be, perhaps a bit performatively given the situation, only to wind up hearing some of the stories that the kid has collected about him and realizing that he has managed to do a lot of good. So in the end, Peter winds up being that kid's hero and the kid winds up being a hero in his own right and unknowingly saving his idol from a dark place.

Plus this is the kind of story that a big-budget superhero movie couldn't do as it's an intimate story that's primarily devoted to character introspection. Which would have been perfect for a fan-film that doesn't have the same restrictions, they don't have to make an action-focused movie or worry about selling tickets. This could hace worked very well for a 30-60 minutes fan film

I would've imagined it to be about both Peter and the kid dealing with grief in distinct but similar ways, and the kid's questions echo Peter's current sentiments that he thinks he has no answer for, so he delivers what he believes to be a generic hopeful and heroic response as Spider-Man to lift the kid's spirits, which also turns out to be exactly what Peter needed to hear in order for him to move on and strengthen his commitment to being a hero, in a way solidifying how important Spider-Man is to not only the kid and the people of New York, but to Peter as well. But that's a good idea, so of course they didn't do it.

This. Doesn’t help they’re ALL being mopey pieces of trash. Imagine if we started with all them chilling together, having fun and palling around (hopefully with ASM/Raimi dialogue than this), and if seeing just like news clipping about Gwen dying, Peter was trying to act like his usual self cause “That’s what she would’ve wanted and it’ll help me cope with it.” Harry reacts all super pissed and tells him that he’s never wants to see him again. MJ’s confused on why he’s like this, Pete tries to explain, they share a chuckle at his logic/maybe bad joke and then after a bit, she starts sobbing uncontrollably over the railing. Parker just walks over to her, and hugs her while he says, “Let it out. That’s good. Hey, in case you ever feel like this again, I’m here for you.” We then go to the kid’s house and just bond with the 2 with shop talk and some hero stories (minus all the nostalgia bait/references). Kid just innocently asks, “Is there anything bad about being Spider-man?” Pete’s quiet for a minute, letting all that grief and sadness hit, and finally responds, “Some days are get through. Some days, you wake up with everything hurting and no matter what, you can’t make it go away. Some days… you wonder if you’re in over head and… you’re not good enough…” Pete walks out for a minute and a scene like Webb describes happens. Reinvigorated a bit, Parker goes back in and reveals his identity and chills with him some more. After leaving, he decides to swing by MJ’s and she opens the door, seemingly in a better mood, and Peter finally lets it all out, vice versa of earlier scene. Close door, end of film. Imagine if this was like 30-40 minutes of each character reacting and trying to deal with their depression differently than just telling us “Man, I’m hella sad that Stacy’s gone.” Even we don’t see them happy the whole time, at least we’d see more of their personality reflected by a event like this than what we actually get.

Not only that, but character's death was written in such a way that it served several plot functions at the same time: it pushed Peter to a _very_ dark headspace, was done deliberately by the villain to try and break him, and ultimately provided the last bit of character growth Peter needed.

I think the ultimate test for Spider-Man fans is when they decide to make actual stories about Spider-Man, whether an official Marvel licensed work or a fanmade project. Most of them put their everything into them because, especially for fan films, that’s what they must give to make the dang thing. You can learn a lot about someone from what they make, especially Spider-Man stories. Great video, considering I’ve never actually seen the film myself (don’t wanna give Gavin any views) and my twin brother severely regrets donating to this ego stroke of a Spider-Man fan film.

Spider man is actually a good litmus test for marvel fans. He is supposed to be a stand in for comic fans who feel disenfranchised or left out so the more someone who makes a spider man anything really shows how much they notice and care about the things they read that’s not to say they’re all good but you can tell when someone is putting their heart and soul into something

@Butwhythough8819 ай бұрын
@@EthanRom The point still stands. You want to do stuff of that size. Build yourself up to be able to do it. I know people always say “you should make what you want to make” but if you don’t have the skill and know-how make something on the same scale as this movie’s concept, you probably should hold off until you can. It’s how we got directors like Ed Wood and the guy who made Manos The Hands of Fate.
@EthanRom9 ай бұрын
@@Butwhythough881 The thing is the big directors now likely had their stinkers back when they were growing up, but the difference was they didn't have the internet ridiculing them. This is unhealthy for the indie film making space. Indie film making is supposed to be a place to make mistakes. Try things that maybe work or maybe don't. Now we are criticising the work of an 18 year old and holding him to the same standard of big budget studios. It's incredibly dangerous to do this. If this becomes a trend, it'll turn off a lot of indie directors from even putting their work out there. Remember a lot of them do it for passion and not for monetary gain. It's easy to blast big budget movies, because we paid money to watch the movies and they owe us as fans, but to have this entitlement towards fan projects is not right
@Butwhythough8819 ай бұрын
@@EthanRom First of all, don’t mix up passion and spite. That’s very to do. Second, the directors that had their “stinkers” back in the day, still received criticism and feedback and bettered themselves. Ed Wood made a lot of bad films, that eventually did become cult classics but were panned back in the day, and didn’t care about feedback/criticism and you know what happened to him? He spent the remainder of his life making porn flicks. As a young or indie filmmaker, while you should never be fine with death threats, you should be open to criticism and constructive feedback. Gavin made a feature-length Spider-Man movie that tried to be on the same level as a big budget studio film and even had a big movie premiere for it, so naturally it’s going to be held to that standard. Also Gavin isn’t a child, he’s an adult. And it’s comments like yours that allow people to refuse to learn from mistakes. Other fan projects out there do a way better job without trying to be on the same level as the studios, and they don’t get anywhere the amount of press Lotus got. THAT is what bothers me most. Filmmaking is a competitive business if you can’t handle the heat and improve, you won’t get far.

So one of the darkest and most iconic moments in comics history was literally never even *meant* to happen in the first place. I say all that to say.... I agree with his take on "The Death of Gwen Stacy isn't really possible to adapt properly as a singular movie." ....so just do what Spectacular Spider-Man and the Ultimate Spider-Man Comics did and keep her alive and tell a story based around her that way.

I would like to point out something similar to what Cosmonaut Variety Hour said in his video regarding Lotus: If you have a dream project that you think is worth it, it is probably also worth waiting for it. What I mean is you should just do enough projects so you can gain more experience, knowledge, and understanding of the art medium you are working with, so you can later use that experience to make your dream project the best it can be. If you start with your dream project, not only you are risking making a product that is not good, but if you decide to continue your career, it will not matter how much experience you have gained, you will never be able to go back to your project (unless you get a shot at a remake, or you are George Lucas). I'll admit... I would like to write books, but so far I've barely done anything to improve or work for that matter. However, I noticed that I'm focusing too much on a project that just... will not turn out to be good with my level of experience (too many characters, complicated world-building, not having a clear aim for the story, too ambitious).

Such as an Anti-Hero, being a "Hero" thats so morally questionable, out of pocket and out of the line of actual heroism, that said character makes you go "Wow... ihat's a hero?" or "Hey that aint no Hero...", similar to Anti-Villain, which is a "Villain" that goes on the same of making you go: "Wow, that's the villain?" or "That aint no Villain!...". Apparently a Hero/Villain, or supposely one. Yet, are quite the opposite. In similar fashion: Anti-Fan! Since Lotus was heavily marked as being made by fans, for fans. Yet, this movie really manages to go so out of the line at literally everything inside and related to it, that it makes any actual fan go "Wow... that ain't no fan-for-fan project..." The dangers of the "fan mentality" and "fan material" are, very typically, it becomes way over confident of a certain, specific interpretation of the "source material" that they PREFER, and often mistake their own preference as an objective, definitive, and prescriptive standard on how the "source material" should be viewed. (... but in reality, even the "source material" itself switches back and forth between different portrayals and its interpretations. Thus, what "being true to source material" actually means, is itself a contentious issue) In short, it's basically just the toxicity of "fan forums" coming alive in some other media form. Everyone has a certain, preferred view and interpretation, and they start fighting over who has the "correct" view of the "source material." So they go into diatribes about why everyone else's view on the "source material" is wrong, and how their interpretation is the "correct" one, and therefore how they are the most authentic and superior among true fanbois, and ultimately, should be able to gatekeep. Ah, the dark side of "fan culture." You see these stuff everyday in any medium that has a "fandom." Star Wars fans, Trekkies, LotR fans, Kaiju movie fans.. video game fans.. animation/manga fans (anyone remember the '90s and the fekkin' 'Evangelion debates'?) ... etc. etc. So, this film, is basically the culmination of that negative side of 'fan culture.' You know what this reminds me of? Sonic Omens A "fan" game that had a lengthy development period, released with negative reception from fans, was eventually revealed to be made out of spite by the creator Bolt and had some seriously scummy people who didn't sugarcoat their behaviour and misdeeds. Case and Point: The words "Bad Girl" being textured on Maria's underwear (I'm not joking) Edit: Not to mention, the most melodramatic story that puts Sonic 06 to shame, like SplashDash said

This is much better than Cosmonaut Variety Hour's review. He legit started his review out by saying he hates fan works and pretty much wrote off anything not made by the big studios. Your review is automatically better by virtue of not using your platform to devalue fan works in general.

I’m someone who used to not vibe with the MCU interpretation of Spider-Man (mostly because I had high expectations that it would be the best and most accurate Spider-Man in live action). I’ve grown to appreciate and love it more over time. However, in all my years of not hating but not loving this adaptation, I never once thought “oh I bet I can do better” because that’s stupid, insane, and frankly an insult to all the passionate artists that have their own vision for what Spider-Man should be. Even as someone who loves the older incarnations better (the Raimi trilogy being a big part of why I love the character), I would rather get a new fresh take on the character that still respects the source material than a botched retelling of two of the characters best stories. Personally, I would love to see a live action Spider-Man Netflix series that goes from Freshman High school Peter to middle aged father and husband Peter Parker. Similar in style and writing to the Daredevil show. But that’s just me.

“I can do better” or even “Anyone can do that” is how we got such wonderful films like The Room and Manos The Hands of Fate. Also I heard he tried to back pedal on those statements by creating fake tweets saying that it wasn’t the case?

I knew Gavin and his friends for quite some time when I was younger, he and those who surrounded him never tended to like me as I was really passionate about Tom Holland's Spider-Man. A lot of those in his corner would call others slurs by commenting one letter at a time and Gavin had (I belive jokingly) told me to take my own life when I was a teenager. There was a lot of hate for Tom Holland's Spider-Man brought on by a KZbinr Hi-Top films and so a lot of people tried to come up with their own ways to do it better. Gavin's work just like many others was not out of a place of love but of hatred so I believe that truly is why this film was not as amazing as it could have been. If it was made out of passion for the source material I believe this film would have been spectacular, but it was made out of spite. I hope that more fan-films that were made out of love can be given the spotlight in the future.
@Butwhythough8819 ай бұрын
If he and his friends didn’t like you for you liking Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and using slurs, I doubt he was joking. Other than that, most of the people who are praising this film are either Raimi fanboys, toxic MCU haters, or people who claim they know the comics but have never picked one up. I think it’s funny however that Gavin’s big dream Spider-Man story to one up the MCU was a 1:1 adaptation of two comics that you can just go read and get the same amount of content but better written and much shorter. Spider-Man Monsters of Manhattan is a fan series that’s coming out and it looks like it has a great production value. We should definitely push that one into the spotlight.

At least Hi-Top had the emotional intellect and maturity to understand that it’s okay for others to like the MCU spider-man trilogy. Gavin just seems to be pretentious about it.
@Benji5689 ай бұрын
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you, man. As someone who likes the MCU Spidey films too, and I am not ashamed to admit it, I know how it feels. Jon Watts did his own thing with the character, and that is totally okay. I bet there's some Batman fans out there who are hating on Matt Reeves' interpretation and are shouting to the world for how much it sucked and those who like it are shills who don't understand Batman. I mean people can like what they like, you can't just blatantly tell them they're wrong. If people do that to others, then clearly they are assholes. Gavin is clearly a toxic manbaby who doesn't like change and hates anybody who has a different vision to him. There are some fans who are like this and it sucks. He clearly made this garbage movie to stick it to Jon Watts, Kevin Fiege and Marvel Studios saying "Look at this. I can do better. I know Spider-Man than you ever will." and he failed miserably.

This entire movie just makes me think of when Max G was ranting about the Powerpuff Girls 2016 reboot and said "Why would you focus on the part of a superhero's life when they're not being a superhero, when UNDENIABLY the most interesting THING about superheroes...is THAT THEY'RE SUPERHEROES!!!" It's even dumber in Spider-Man's case, because we already get to see plenty of his non-superhero life in the source material alongside his superhero life. We didn't need to see an extended teen drama cut of his normal life, it's just redundant.
