I don’t think it’s fair to call Firouzja’s play flagging. He had less material and had to play as fast as possible.

That is flagging as he was intentionally doing it. He and many others have done it before as well even in drawing positions instead of offering a draw. He smartly allowed Magnus to promote a queen as it would take more time and played short moves. In online, it is done by top players regularly. But that is within the rules and is completely fair. Some people consider it unsportsmanlike like Arjun but I don't agree with that since you are entitled to take advantage of your fast play especially in no increment faster time controls (you're the one who went to that position by thinking in less time), and, not only you are entitled to but you in fact SHOULD do it, if you are playing for your team in a team event like this. This is why I didn't like what Arjun did against Pragg and Vidit in this GCL when he offered a draw instead of flagging them, especially when his team Ganges is in heavy requirement of game points. That is within the rules and in fact, that is one of the key aspects of the format.

@@_sayan_roy_ ionno, I feel like the time scramble on board comes down to non chess results where it's just about who can move their pieces quicker, it's not about who played better chess, it makes sense online because you can premove, and it is kind of a testament to your prowess over predicting others moves, over the board it's just ugly.

Those who said that time increment is necessary.they forget that it is 20-minute game so there is far more time than bullet and blitz with time increment. These players play bullet in this era. so managing time is the key.

The difference is that bullet and blitz are played online where premoves are possible. Bullet is rarely played OTB with no increment, people knock pieces over and it becomes a mad scramble. Blitz is also played with increment OTB for this reason.

Format is bad because the quality of chess goes out the window in order to play fast and flag people. For example, someone with a winning endgame won't be able to try to convert it. The spectacle goes, the quality of chess deteriorates. The Gukesh vs Wei Yi endgame doesn't happen, the Gukesh vs Fabi win doesn't happen (they would exchange everything and go for a draw or flag each other)

This format is OK once in a while but no increment just becomes a technicality seeking game instead of the point of chess to checkmate an opponent.. it looses the main idea of what chess is supposed to be and becomes a different game... checkmate would be impossible if magnus had only the king on the board or only the king and the bishop. But with the queen and the bishop on the board in theory you can still reach a position where Alireza(black) checkmates Magnus(white) with just the knight (because white would have some escape squares blocked by his own pieces). That's why black doesn't take the queen at last.

Lack of material only comes to play when opponent has no material too. In this case Carlson had some pieces which can act a blockage and alow knight to checkmate somehow theoretically.. so firoza will win according to rules..
