As someone on the original development team @ WDI R&D back in 2000, this is a great video and generally pretty accurate. Some minor inaccuracies, though. Our team who did Toontown was not the Disney Quest team - we did Aladdin VR and Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney Quest. Some of us also did the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire interactive game you could play from home while the show was airing live. But DQ itself was a larger team that wasn't within the R&D group. We just created the software/hardware that they would install along side a bunch of other things R&D had nothing to do with (such as Cyberspace Mountain IIRC). Also, there actually was an original chat box that had language filtering. I tested it and broke it, because my filthy mind figured out a whole bunch of ways to get around it. That's why we moved to a menu based system. In 2001 WDI was hit with massive layoffs and the team actually was moved from WDI to Disney Interactive, so WDI was only the formal developer for the first year and change. After that it was DI. Overall, though, this brought back a lot of memories and I'm glad everyone still thinks fondly of it!

I never played Toontown. I saw the commercials for it but I never checked it out. Man, those commercials take me back. Watching Suite Life of Zack and Cody or Phineas and Ferb, the commercial breaks would consist of ads for Toontown, Danimals, Zoobooks... it takes me back, man. Those commercials were so iconic that even though I didn't actually play the game, it felt like it was part of my childhood. Anyways, I can't wait to see more expeditions in the virtual world, especially Planet Coaster. That's my favorite game right now.

I remember VIVIDLY dragging my parents to our TV set while the Toontown commercial was on and begging them to please purchase a subscription! Fast forward to today: I'm 26 years old. MULTIPLE servers now host their own wonderfully created versions of Toontown! It's amazing that a game 90's kids would only remember and enjoy is still thriving and the community is still going strong. Nothing replaces the original, however, so many versions exist now for you to try out. I play Corporate Clash since Rewritten doesn't work with my firewall system- no matter how many times I've tried even with customer support lol. But still, each version has it's own experience to play

It's always a great day when Toontown gets some much deserved attention (although the fact that there was no mention of Toon Tag at Epcot saddens me). For those of you who are discovering this game for the first time or rediscovering it after it's closures, there is so much to do, and even more happening as time goes on! For those of you who want to dip their toes into Toontown without playing it, there's a small but lively community of content creators on KZbin and Twitch who make Toontown Online (TTO) content thanks to the fan servers in existence today! Also for those who want to play, yes, I did say servers, as in multiple. Toontown Rewritten is the closest thing you'll get to TTO, but there's also Tooniversal Studios (TVS), Corporate Clash (CC), and more! TVS has the same structure as your average Toontown game but with new content, whereas CC has reinvented what it means to be a Toontown server with added content, gameplay mechanic additions and changes, and the first new boss for Toontown since TTO's Chief Executive Officer. Overall, Toontown has a growing community, with more coming out every day! There's never been a better time to get back into it, so if you'd like to, feel free to say hi and explore what the Toontown community has to offer!
@PeppersnoopTT4 жыл бұрын
I love your content, and I'm really glad you made this video. Toontown was my favorite game growing up, and it taught me a lot about myself and inspired me in ways no other game ever could. It also has such an intriguing history, you could likely pour 2hrs of video into the rabbit hole of the game's development, what was lost to time, the "why" behind its closure (Disney had already diverted most of Toontown's dev team to Club Penguin by 2008, explaining the sudden slowdown of updates in 2009-2013), etc, so you covering this game is like PB&J to me.

I didn't get to play Toontown Online but I was HUGE into Pirates of the Caribbean Online! I used to spend hours sailing around, doing ship upgrade mini games, fighting all kinds of enemies in the swamp and the infamous ghost pirates "raids" on tortuga. So much fun, and was super bummed to find out that it was shut down. I wasn't aware of that the shutdown was happening and logged on one day to find that "Access to the Server is no longer available". Same thing with Magic Kindom Online. Ahh the early days of the internet, fond memories indeed. Great Video as always!

I love TT Rewritten but I’m more into the other server called “Tooniversal Studios” which is like TTR but it adds on to it: New Gag Track, Spin. New Cog Type, Pressbots. Sellbot Field Offices, Lawbot Field Offices. 10 Story Buildings. The Max laff is around 166 - 172. New Species, Hedgehog. Cog Race Tracks, Cog Golf Courses. There’s more like after you’re done with the main story, you can get sos card tasks from the HQ counter and it’s really helpful!! There’s more stuff in the game that I have not mention. Right now it is in their beta mode and although it doesn’t have a lot of players getting online, I bet it’ll be an awesome game to play once it’s fully done and out. They’re also taking suggestions in which is very lovely and doesn’t take too long for them to fix bugs. :) For people who are realizing TTR’s existence or plays TTR. Best to check out Tooniversal as well. It’s a fun game.

I'll have to look into Toontown Rewritten. I think something you didn't mention is that as the years went by, the original Toontown began to lock more and more content behind paid memberships, which is also what would befall Club Penguin.
@blacksonder92524 жыл бұрын
Disney had a lot of these types of games. While I played ToonTown a lot as a kid, it was Pirates Online, Pirates of the Caribbean, that my heart was at for many years and many hours and all nighters were spent as kid me had a routine of going to the most difficult islands and facing the toughest enemies. I still have so many clear memories of the Jolly Roger raids, the original cutscenes of the bar owner's wife slapping you down and guy being dissolved for accepting double pay from Sparrow, and all the potion games. There was a well known glitch in the game that allowed you to stand outside the confines of the map, and so many people knew. So much so that, when you went into that area, there were always people already there. It's was a great MMO and I would probably go back if something like the ToonTown remaster came today. Pirates was a LOT bigger, so it's not an easy task to bring that back.

Hi, love the videos. What do you think of the idea of a top gun roller coaster. Backstory: Youre on a g force tolerance run or something like that and your pilot is maverick. Queuing could feature weapons and general aircraft stuff, potentially an old f14 shell. This could be achieved with partnering with the us navy, (could even have a blue Angel's train). Ride: You sit 2 by 2 in a mock up of an f18 or f14 cockpit with no canopy and little wings with 6 cars meaning 12 people (small I know). Its a launch coaster where the launch section is themed like an aircraft carrier in which you're on the catapult. The coaster would be like rocking roller coaster at Disney, probably about 4 or 5, a couple of corkscrew, a loop, and an upside down section to pay homage to the 'flip the birdie' scene. And of course danger zone would be played.
