While we are talking about Baby Esther as far as black singers inspiring the show we should atleast mention Cab Calloway, a black singer who voiced the singing role for Koko the Clown, one of Betty's reoccurring friends, and many other episodes featuring his original songs like Minnie the Moocher. From what I could find, Calloway had a very positive experience with the Studio.

The issue when people talk about Betty Boops connection with Black culture is they say she's a whitewashed black woman, or based off of Baby Esther herself. Baby Esther was only around 12 years old when Betty Boop was created and looks nothing like her but the singing styles are similar because the woman she was based off of stole her style from a black child. Betty Boop is not an example of whitewashing but something equally as bad, being based off a white woman who earned her career by being inspired by black artists and pretending she created it. Betty Boop was obviously based off Helen Kane and Kane lost her trial against Fleischer studios about using her image because of her trying to include the way Betty Boop sings the "boop boop be doop" in the case. Baby Esther had been performing since around 1926, singing in a baby voice and including "boo boo boo" and "doo doo doo" in her performances, Helen Kanes big break was in 1927 and there is evidence of her attending Baby Esther performances in 1928 so the trial was dismissed as Helen Kane was not the first to do this singing style nor the only one famous for it. I think if Helen Kane only sued for the use of her Image she might have won, but by trying to act like she invented or owned her singing and scatting style she screwed herself over because she didn't want to admit that she was inspired by a black child. Jazz and R&B are inherently black but the history of white people becoming famous and developing styles off of black music without recognition is so rife it's crazy. Elvis Presley pioneered Rockabilly but sometimes people forget Rockabilly was created by blending western and R&B music together, Rock and Roll was literally birthed by both black and white people but it's often seen as a "white" genre.

The whole woke notion of cultural appropriation has gone to far. Like I better not catch anyone that’s not fully Italian eating pizza or if you aren’t Chinese you can’t eat rice. People complain if their culture is underground and not noticed yet the second it becomes mainstream or popular they complain that it’s been stolen or copied. Everything originated somewhere. Things that were done thousands of years ago in one culture, are now popular today in other cultures, things shift around and many ideas bounce through different cultures and are given that cultures perspective on it. So while I can appreciate wanting “credit” for your culture, none of us really own anything. For example braids. Braids are seen in almost every culture from Native American, to Dutch, to African American,all the way to South America/Latin/Mexican culture. All different skin tones and ethically different people who wore a style that defending on the culture was used for different reasons. So unless we can go back and find the first caveman who did the first braid, none of us really “started” anything.

I remember seeing a pinterest "fact" completely misconstrue the trial, saying that Helen Kane was black. It even used photos of the clearly white person and people still believed it in comments. Absolutely unacceptable butchering of history that left out Esther Jones entirely. Betty Boop cartoons are wild to watch. Its most famous, Minnie the Moocher (and at least two other shorts), use Cab Calloway's music and even rotoscoped his dancing. Cab Calloway was famous for performing at the Cotton Club, and "Minnie the Moocher" was the first single record by an African American to sell a million copies. The Fleischer brothers were more willing to take risks with their cartoons, for good and bad. If you watch any Betty Boop cartoon, I'd encourage Minnie the Moocher for its surrealism and its music.

I wonder how people who never seen Betty Boop cartoons and only saw still images and fanart perceive her. Because I guess you would think looking at her that she's a female fatale character but I think she's really "born sexy yesterday" type of character ig. But also barbie-esque multitalanted and also morally progressive character.
@jasonblalock4429
@jasonblalock4429 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think Betty fits the "born yesterday" trope because in most of her shorts, she's presented as canny and worldly. Even with her childlike voice and behavior, she's smarter than she looks, and fully capable of getting herself out of trouble. If anything, she's affirmational that women can be sexy AND self-reliant, which was a pretty bold statement at the time. (I mean, sure, from a modern perspective her infantilization is problematic, but in context she was a big deal.)

I think that licensing issues, plus a reluctance to show b&w cartoons to modern audiences, has limited how much Betty Boop cartoons have been aired/distributed, basically since colour TV became the norm. Like everyone, I was always vaguely aware of the character, but only tracked down the actual cartoons pretty recently, as an adult. But she really is one of the coolest characters, in some of the best cartoons from that 'rubber hose animation' era. Betty Boop was always meant for a more adult audience, that more famous cartoons from that era, from Disney, WB (Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, early Bugs and Elmer), or MGM (Tom &Jerry). Betty IS portrayed as child-like and super-innocent, but also with that surreal, Bugs Bunny vibe, of being ridiculously expert at every random task that drops into her lap. Her sex appeal was definitely always a key part Betty Boop- But only as ONE aspect of a complex, capable, 3 dimensional character; She was always far less passive and more of a well-rounded character in the 20s and 30s, than most female cartoon characters from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Probably the thing modern audiences would take issue with, about Betty Boop (and basically ALL cartoons from the 20s and 30s- even squeaky-clean Disney) is the use of racial stereotypes; It's very rarely done in a way that seems mean-spirited or "hateful", but it's definitely stuff that would get you 'cancelled' today, regardless. But idk, I'm black myself, but I still find it weirdly "charming", even "quaint", the way they're so quick to whip out racial stereotypes in old-timey cartoons.... But if you ARE offended by that stuff, probably best to avoid Betty Boop (and basically ALL cartoons, up to about the 60s...)

Great video and analysis! It seems pretty obvious Helen Kane did inspire her character, along with Esther Jones and the look a like they used in court. The studio could have admitted she was part of the inspiration, that much was so obvious, I can't believe she lost the lawsuit. The studio's behavior afterwards (with that victory song and the Betty Boop goes to court episode) was so petty and unprofessional. They knew she was right, lost anyway, and wanted to rub it in her face. They didn't even try to hide it. Very sus. There are so many creepy interactions on the show with Betty facing predators and so many questionable things, but at the same time, I can't help, but to love her character! She's so feisty, adorable, and ahead of her time.

Betty's cartoon about Tokyo, Japan, is the 1934 " A Language all my own". When after she flies her own airplane ✈ West across the Pacific is a tribute to Miss Amelia Aerhart. Then at the Tokyo Theatre, she sings 1st in English. Then does an on-stage costume change as her short little black dress 👗 🤔 is changed into a Kimono 👘. And her voice actress Miss Mae Questel sings in phonetic Japanese, and all the while the Japanese audience is getting worked up into a frenzy when they start singing along, and dancing in their seats 💺 😄 😀 😉!!!!! Then as Betty departs for the U.S.A., and her plane is overloaded with flowers 💐 😍 😄 and gifts 🎁!!!!! So Betty was a smash hit in Tokyo!! (But only until December 7, 1941). But what if Betty had been in a German language cartoon?? After all, the 1930s Depression and ART DECO PERIOD was a crazy time of change!!

I'm guessing someone owns the rights to her who isn't about it. For a while I don't think anyone owned her likeness, kinda like what happened to Marilyn where she got merchandised onto everythinggg and so did Betty for a while there. I feel like someone bought the rights to her image and has tightened the belt. Someone had to do that with Marilyn too

@@undetestable1 The issue of the ownership of Betty Boop is actually an extremely dense tangle of complications with at least three different companies claiming at least partial ownership of the character. After she fell out of style in the late 30's the character was deemed unimportant and the exact transfer of rights over the next couple of decades is extremely fuzzy. Last time I checked, Paramount owns the distribution of the original films, Fleischer inc. owns the trademark of the character and is in fact a shell company that only exists to do so, and the merchandising rights were until recently held by King syndicate but by now I believe have been transfered to Global Icons. Here first few cartoons will go into the public domain in 2026, barring any further interference from Disney into the U.S copyright laws.

I love it when videos have a non-biased approach to them. Betty Boop is such an iconic cartoon character, and being an artist myself, I can definitely understand how frustrating it can be when anyone wants to own a character just because word phrases or certain outfits are used. Artist get inspired and what-you-see-is-what-you-get. I think it's awesome that we know that the character Betty Boop had a lot of detail that actually went into her making. From her starting out as a dog like character, to evolving into the Betty Boop that we know and love today.

The dolls’ clothing, shoes and accessories inspiration are taken from name brands like Chanel, Armani, Fendi, Givenchy to Adidas, Supreme and OffWhite. It’s very interesting!

Betty Boop is Jewish in the show! Her father wears a kippah and she has a Yiddish accent. The Jewish American actress who voiced Betty - Mae Questel started out doing competitions where she would do vaudeville impersonation - the studio hired her when they heard her Helen Kane impersonation! Please don't misunderstand me - I'm not saying that Ester was not a major influence on the scene. It seems like a melting pot situation. It's just typical that white media decided to promote a white person for Betty's image- Helen Kane being one of the biggest at the time. It's totally horrible that poc were not recognised, credited or compensated for their talent and innovation 😭

The main reason why Betty Boop is still seen as an icon to this day is because she was the first proper sex symbol in animation before that we only had characters that were clones of the males or olive oil from Popeye so not much variety so having this character early I know it’s independent and sexy meant so much to so many people inspired millions upon millions of animated ladies after if it wasn’t for her we would probably not have the quality of unique female characters that we do today or even most of the sexy ones Also for the whole Betty Boop was based on a black woman is kind of but not really true Max Fleischers grandson put it spectacularly well as yes Betty Boo was generally inspired but the whole 1920s jazz baby concept and that also included a lot of black talent so technically she was kind of inspired by Esther Jones but also not really and we don’t really know that much about Esther Jones except for the trial so can we really played upon ourselves to say that this fictional character was based on a real woman that we really know nothing about Idk Sorry if I made any spelling mistakes I’m not a good speller

Veve recently dropped their Betty Boop NFT statues. I picked one up as I grew up watching Betty Boop with my mom who was a big fan. A day later I was at a local store and a young brother dude had a Betty shirt on. I showed him my NFT and we got to talking - he watched her cartoons with his grandma. Seems like younger fans had a pretty cool lady in their lives that introduced them to the classics.

@@sams3015 You might be thinking of Samoan Betty Boop. There is at least three shorts that presents Betty as being Samoan, but other than that she is white. I only seen one of those shorts, which I believe is 'Bamboo Isle' and it is on KZbin. Bamboo Isle starts off well at the start as it showcases a live action performance of actual Samoan musicians and goes pretty bad once the cartoon comes on the screen because of racist caricatures.
