The Ainulindalë or Music of the Ainur is the foundation and creation of our beloved legendarium. I have really wanted to make this video for a long time, and I really hope you all enjoy it! I have always thought each "section" of the song corresponds to the ages of middle earth. The breaks are always after a huge discordant part of the song which matched the battles at the end of each age. Only the 4th age was unsung and the all of the players in first three ages left middle earth for the age of men. The final age was Iluvitar's creation alone, the age of men.

I read all the books many years ago, I am 55 now, what I find astonishing is that the cast that Peter Jackson assembled, fit so perfectly with the vision of these characters, which I saw in my minds eye, when I read the books as a teenager. We all will play a part in bringing the balance back. Surprised you didn't quote Illuvatars' response to Melkors' music. Every time I watch the Fellowship of the Ring and I see Frodo stand up amidst the shouting and chaos, and say "I will take it, I will take the ring to Mordor" tears come to my eyes, even writing this and thinking about, is bringing a tear. Wow can Tolkien write a story or what! Of course I had to wait quite a while to finally have the privilege to read the Silmarillion. Magnum Opus Indeed.

It's hard to correlate the song to the middle earth timeline. Some believe the songs represent major events, births, or races coming to middle earth. Some believe the song may represent the various fighting of the gods, such as first verse is the forming of the planet surface which morgoth corrupted, second can be the coming of elves, third is the humans (rhe rough notes during all the songs may be Morgoth/sauron trying to take over the world with balrogs and orcs) Some believe the song and events represent the fading of middle earth. There used to be many magic glades and forests in beginning ages, but everything wears down to rationalism, and into the power of humans by end of third age.

Perhaps the songs are the three ages of Middle Earth. I don't know much about the three ages, but the time of the Lord of the Rings is often referred to as the Third Age. It is that one that ends in a giant climatic finale where all evil is at the verge of overcoming the world, when suddenly good rises victorious to end the Third Age.

The first theme was for the creation of Adra and the natural world, the second theme possibly the creation of non sentient life, the third theme was the creation of the Children of Illuvatar. We are specifically told in the Silmarillion that Elves and Men were created with the third theme of Illuvatar. The song of endless repetition was simply the manifestation of Melkor's violence, hatred and rage.

I think that Dagor Dagarth is based on the book of Revelations from the Bible. This is likely due to Tolkien being a devout catholic. I think that in the Lord of the Rings world, Dagor Dagaroth will eventually happen, but none save Iluvatar know when it will happen just like how it says in the Bible that none except God know when the end times will come.

Kenton Park I always thought that Tulkas (please forgive me if I misspelled his name) represents Michael since in the story he is the one who wrestles and captures Melkor each time, despite the fact that he will not strike the final blow. I am not sure whether to recommend the Simarillian or not; it starts out good but a little long, but it soon gets bogged down in boring stories about elves that might or might not affect the overall story. The worst part is that you are not sure what elf stories will have an important role later on.

Kenton Park I would definitely recommend the Silmarillion. I enjoyed it more than the Lord of the Rings, because Tolkien's strength as a writer is world-building, and his style of prose lends itself more to the epic poem format of the Silmarillion than to the more standard fantasy novel format of LotR.

The Ainulindalë is one of my favourite parts of all of Tolkien's writing. The imagery is beautiful. On your pronunciation of Maiar, an "ai" is pronounced "eye", as in eyeball, not "ay". So it's m-EYE-ar, not m-AY-ar. Oddly you pronounce Ainur correctly even though it's spelled the same :P

From what i remember having read in the silmarillion (perhaps in an earlier version) Melkor's dissonance was never able to take over the entirety of the song like that, even when the dissonance grew and more and more maiar picked up this new dark song within the greater chorus, it apparently swayed back and forth a bit but it was never able to overcome the good part of the song, infact the dissonance was weaved into the song in such a way that it *added* to the beauty of it rather than destroy it in the end. Eru even said so to Melkor, that all his evil struggle would only lead to more beauty and wonder in the end and that he would not be able to overcome Eru's own will. I absolutely love the way music and song is reflected all throughout the story of ME. Silmarillion have a tale of a powerful elf battling Sauron in the first age, with song alone. Gandalf used song, not to mention Tom Bombadil who could control both the living trees in his forest as well as barrow wights using nothing but the power of his song.

Great video. I have read the Silmarilion, but since it is not in my native language (the copy I have), I struggled to grasp the full history and missed some details. Dagor Dagorath will take place, I believe. As Tolkien revealed after the making of his books, that he followed the works of the Bible as he considered himself Christian. He created the books as a following Christian tale. In the Bible it is said, that at the end of all time of the world, a great battle will take place with all heaven forces and beings against all the evil forces of existence. The final battle, where evil will be destroyed. I really love the parallel 's!

It's AMAZING the way Tolkien chose to describe the fisical creation of the World, as a SYMPHONY combining all the Valar's contributions together. The hole history of Arda is nothing but the "encarnation" of that Symphony, it's realization to the fisical World. Each song of the Ainur turned to be one different Era of Arda. Each Era began with the "Good" trying to build a balanced living world; and each Era ended with a new attempt by the "Evil" to destroy what had been made. But we learned from Ilúvatar that the Evil could never undo what was created, but could only modify what was being made, resulting in totally new and unexpected accomplishments ("new and unexpected" to the Ainur, but not to Ilúvatar himself). In this sense, Evil can only shape the creations of the Good. Thus, we have been taught by Ilúvatar himself, since the Ainulindalë, that at the End of All Things, Morgoth or Sauron could never be victorious...

Its many many years since I first discovered Tolkiens works and read them avidly but after a while I got fed up with the numerous interpretations and commentaries, it all seemed, well, just like whats happening with JKRowlings books. A bit over the top to put it politely. However I like your videos, they have been informative, well illustrated and haven't stretched ones credulity by over doing the analysis, especially since you are careful to append quotes to show the provenance of your assertions. Just discovered and subbed to your channel a couple of weeks ago, I absolutely love your vids. This is my favorite Tolkien-centered channel, hands down, and I've learned so much about his wonderful universe through your presentations. Thank you so much for all the work you do on your content, it's excellent and I'm always stoked when you post something new. I don't know if it would be a question that would justify an entire video (and forgive me if you've already covered it in a vid I might have missed), but I've always wondered if Gandalf had some historical beef with Durin's Bane? After it snared him off the bridge in Khazad-dum, Gandalf survived the initial fall (though he was weakened) and he followed the Balrog for more than a week, yes? I have always wondered why he chose to go after the Balrog instead of regaining strength & searching for a way out of Moria to rejoin the Fellowship. Did Gandalf have some kind of history with that particular Balrog which made him determined to destroy it? Was there a reason relating to the fate of the Fellowship or The One Ring? Or was Gandalf just like "No Balrog is gonna pull *me* off a bridge and get away with it, son!" ?? It's just one of those little questions that has remained in my head, but I've never quite been able to answer. If you (or any other lovely commenter) happens to know, I'd love to find out! And again, thanks so much for the Middle-Earth education!
