I had to scroll down way too far to find a comment about how FUCKING amazing Hamish Linklater was as Father Paul. When he speaks (especially towards the end when he is most conflicted) he stammers, trying to find the right words for the situation. Countered with how valiantly, and strongly he speaks when on the pulpit really tell us a lot about his character without beating us over the head with what his character is like. He put on a performance that I won't forget for a long time.

Very good embodiment of a nervous priest with hindrances to social skills that puts a lot of passion into their sermons. I saw so many charismatic pastors from my childhood in his performance. The catharsis was real, Riley going after religion one on one.

In a show full of great performances, his does go overlooked. He's essentially killing this entire town and you can't blame the guy too much, he's human and he thought he was doing good. His line delivery where he says "it's not about me, it was never supposed to be about me, it was supposed to be about god!" gives me chills

Absolutely agree. This series said so many things I never thought would be said on camera. The one theme they neglected to mention in this review was addiction- and Hamish Linklater’s attempts to justify his “addiction” and bring others into the fold of his addiction…. Brilliantly portrayed and I can’t imagine anyone else in this role. I’d only seen HL in a minor role in The Big Short, and I’m baffled by his control of this character and he plays it just so effortlessly, which of course comes from a lot of work and dedication.

I can’t believe I waited this long to see Midnight Mass. I’m blown away. The story was amazing on many levels, and the acting was something else. Everybody was great, but Hamish Linklater?…holy crap, he did a phenomenal job! One more thing, the limited series format has to be the best medium for storytelling. It gives ample time to establish characters. But it also has an established, well-thought-out screenplay…as opposed to open-ended series, where the creators attempt to drag out the story indefinitely, depending how much money it makes. Anyway, fricken amazing series. You could recommend this to an avid horror fan, or just anyone who appreciates good storytelling/acting.

It most likely simply has to do with expectations and adjusting yourself for that kind of experience. I just finished the show this morning, having known absolutely nothing about the show going in other than the creator's other works, and I'll admit that even I was kind of taken aback by all the monologuing. I very much enjoy slow, character-focused stories; but knowing only that this was by the creator of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, I definitely wasn't expecting how slow and thematic the show actually was. It was a good show, but I think Netflix could have marketed it far better to prepare audiences for what they were actually getting into.

God, this made me feel a thousand times better. I think Midnight Mass is genuinely one of the greatest pieces of modern cinema to date. It's so well shot, acted, written, and constructed that it's a masterpiece. I remember coming out of the show (the first time), thinking that it was one of the most thought provoking and well-executed takes on modern religion and religious trauma, and I was shocked to see that 90% of the commentary was centered around the monologues. I know some of them are long, but they're so well performed and they mean so much in terms of the greater story that they're vital and necessary to make this story work. I honestly don't understand how people would wish they were shorter or more succinct.

One of the best slow burns I’ve ever watched. There’s little horror bits throughout but it’s mostly saved for the explosive final couple episodes. @theeternalnow65062 жыл бұрын
This exactly. I put it on, having no idea what type of show it would be. Just took a chance, and the burn was SO slow that I completely was unaware I was watching a kind of horror type show, but because the characters were so engaging and interesting, the creepy stuff hits that much harder. It was masterfully done. When the darker stuff starts it really gets you. I agree with Mike. It's one of the best things I've ever seen. Such a great choice to do it in 7 eps and done. I really love it when people make a 1 season show. No milking stuff. True Detective season 1 comes to mind as well. That was great as well, but not on the level that this was.

@@Yoshimitsu4prez Yeah, but the show's just not for everyone. There are people that love the Wire and people that think "it's boring." I think the groups are pretty similar with this show. It's telling to me the only actor that was able make those monologues work was Hamish Linklater, a theater actor. It's skill, similar to singing a song with professtional phrasing and control. The other actors are good actors but they obviously haven't had as much practice doing monologues as Hamish has had in his career (not to mention, his mother is a famous voice practitioner). Also, I found the "what happens when we die" monologues to be very freshman Philosophy class. Both of their concepts of death aren't uncommon, nor were they explained in a particularly interesting way imo. Overall I liked it but I think it could have been an episode or two shorter.
