I think it's kinda funny that "cancelled" has become such a buzzword over the last few years that people have forgotten it used to be called "boycotting"
@kylestewart28292 жыл бұрын
You know the worst part is that non English speaking countries also use "cancel" instead of their own word for boycott
@AdirondackRuby2 жыл бұрын
Boycotting is a personal decision. You decide whether or not you want to do business with a person/brand/company. Canceling is when other people make that decision for you by forcing a person/brand/company to shut down, etc so your choice to do or not do business with them is irrelevant. It also goes beyond boycotting, trying to completely shame people off of social media and into silence, erasing them from society by cutting off their options. The two concepts might be similar, but they are not the same.

@@AdirondackRuby "boycotting is a personal decision"? No it's not, what are you talking about? Where do you get these nonsense definitions? @@raditts What? It absolutely is. It is an individual decision to not be a customer, regardless of how others feel or how many other people join in. I grew up with the old A&F and I remember feeling like shit entering their store. I was skinny and definitely not a ‘cool kid’ yet the image they sold made me desperately want to be like them. They were mostly the reason I started working out, and I feel more confident with my body currently. But I knew I had to stop gymming for the wrong reasons as it was so detrimental to my mental health. I didn’t want to do it for the looks in the hopes of being attractive and popular, but for my health. There’s a big difference between the two. We all grow old no matter how attractive we are. I still struggle with it tbh but I’m getting there. Honestly A&F really shot themselves in the foot. There is just no excuse for sexualizing kids, racism and fat shaming. I see A&F as a missed opportunity to encourage people to be healthier, not the whole “we fit in and you don’t” kind of mentality. History would be so different if they had taken the right approach to this instead of what actually happened. I actually miss the store greeters cause it was iconic of their brand and I met many who were genuinely nice. I initially still shopped at A&F as I personally enjoyed their quality and they are far more inclusive now. Unfortunately their quality is no longer as good and their clothes feel very boring so I stopped. It’s not worth the money anymore if the quality is terrible. At least they improved in every other aspect… Oh yeah the Netflix documentary was disappointing cause they skipped over a lot and became boring. So many videos like yours did a far better job!

Working out for me is half looks and half health, but here's the thing, I don't have any particular goal in mind and I'm happy with just some muscle definition, I have no aspiration to become a Greek God like lots of the gym rats do. I really like being a slim twinky guy, it's what I personally find attractive. I can't imagine going to the gym and never feeling like enough, like even if I met my goals still being hyper critical of my body. I'm good with not being fat and having at least some muscle definition. I'm glad you found the right balance for your mental health.

This was the topic of my senior research paper :) i remember finding it particularly interesting as I am a recovered anorexic who spent 16 weeks in treatment during my 8th grade year. In treatment, if we advanced to a certain level we were rewarded with weekend outings. But every time we went on an outing to the mall we had to sign an agreement to NOT go into certain stores that “promoted anorexia” like A&F, VS, and Hollister. And that was back in 2010. Then in 2013 he made all those statements about how he doesn’t want fat people in his stores and I thought it was a great opportunity to explain how dangerous brands like these are for everyone, with or without an eating disorder.

I worked at American Apparel during my uni days. I loved that they were locally made and sweat shop free. The hiring process was basically a casting call. You show up bare faced, simple clothes, and you were hired based on how attractive you were and how you will represent the brand. Our photos were taken and sent to Dov (the founder) for him to make sure we stayed on brand. It was a shitty job, but it got me by. I got free clothes at least lol?? I personally didn't have any weird interactions with Dov, but I heard some rumours. This video made reminded me of my time working at AA, though AA was pretty inclusive about sizing and ethnicity. I think another brand that runs similar to Abercrombie is Brandy Melville.

Wasn't Dov Charney, the guy who ran American Apparel, also incredibly pervy, just like this Jeffries fellow? Unlike Jeffries, Charney went after the women who were alternative and hipster.
