Big gaming companies like EA have long waged war on organized communities like clans and leagues. Communities often want to play a single good game for very long time and can be slow/hesitant to switch games. Communities can keep an old game alive for decades and EA would much rather have some older games die and be forgoten about so they can blatantly pretend they never happened(*cought* star wars battlefront 1&2 *cought* ) Mindless crowds of gamers funneled together into random lobbies by match making,is what is more financialy viable for these large corps(or so they believe) as it trains a mass of consumer gamers increasingly unattached to what ever they play,but ready to drop buck on "the next big thing" .

I can 100% relate to your intro story. Even though I am 50 now I found my community the same way. Joined them (their clan, which is now my clan as well) and for those that stuck around we still play together as time allows (some weeks every night, some weeks only once or twice, but at least every Friday as this is Battlefield-Friday). We did recruit new players that way with our servers and even meet from time to time in real live (we live all across Germany with one guy from Switzerland). And yes, we still use TeamSpeak. ;) Because of the lack of a server browser and the inability to host proper servers with our custom tools we were and still are unable to attract new members, so your clan is dying (sadly, literally as well). If the next BF will not bring any server browser and the ability to host our own servers again -- which I assume it will not -- then this will be the end of our gaming community. And maybe the BF community as a whole and BF will just be 'another shooter'.

Server browser is essentially the thing that gave me my first online community and friends. I can still see several people from Battlefield 3 era who are using the same online nickname in my Discord channels, which has replaced the forums, teamspeak and/or mumble. Deteriorated Battlefield franchise opened other games and activities to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Content creators on KZbin, Twitch or elsewhere cannot rely on this franchise to keep an active audience. Community of a game needs a server browser or a clan based hub. Both preferably. Casual and not hardcover players both are wasting the most precious commodity without server browser: Time. Time between active playing is longer than ever in BF 2042. Battlefield was my first and biggest online game, close to being biggest ever video game of my 50 years on this earth. I've accepted that will most assuredly never return, but a feature complete product that values my TIME is still a dream. Great video again, hope Dice and EA see this and hear our voice.

Hide an option then say nooone uses it so it's not needed. An alternative would be to make it super easy to use and push it as the main option or at least an equivalent. I remember so many community nights, competitive games, communities and platoons, everyone brought together....and now, a maximum of 3 friends can join 'easily' if you want to play on a public server and then its rinse and repeat on the same maps - or worse a server boots up with noone in it repeatedly. Let's hope someone, somewhere sees sense because what we have doesn't. Anyway, cracking video, you never know I guess.

Nailed every point. I started playing Battlefield with BF2 and the series has definitely suffered a sad decline in the most recent games, especially 2042. Extremely frustrating to experience the game without a server browser, basically removing any community aspect the game could have had and denying people the option to select a map to play. I would have honestly enjoyed 2042 so much more if I could have at least filtered out maps. If the next BF title doesn't have a server browser with community server support I may not even try it.

God, there was so much going on, I met so many interesting people, we played so much together...Fan wars, clan wars, gathered detachments, united into clans, built giant communities, created mods, created creative videos...I keep a lot of recordings from teamspeak and the game itself. There are even people on them who, by coincidence, are no longer alive. I keep it as a memory, like photos or videos from a wedding are stored. Some of the players have become my friends in real life. All thanks to that very old bf2. The new parts can't give me that, they can hardly even satisfy the need for a banal game. How can we deal with current developers if nothing affects them and they do not understand our feelings? How? If they don't care, and money is more important to them.

My personal story is I found my current platoon during the BF3 (though i started playing in BF2) days and we still play to this day people come and go there used to be maybe 11-16 of us in a game and in TS at a time during those day now there is 2 of us left who actively still play together, while adding some new fresh faces when we find them. Most of the old team left due to the lack of server hosting. But the one who still plays with me on a regular basis is invited to my wedding next year as we've met a fair few times over the years and we've been gaming together on Battlefield for over a decade! I think i know few other people who ive made such bonds with and those were during the PEAK WoW days. A serverbrowser is a MUST HAVE community feature and i think the future of Battlefield actually depends on it, 2042s match making has torn down all forms community building and most of portal is just nonsense servers and XP farms....

still so incredibly frustrated with DICE’s decision to not include a server browser with their star wars battlefront games AND with a future update in SWBFII that forced players to search for a new game only after two matches, like 2042’s core matchmaking it is so difficult to play certain maps due to the constant server switchover and renders less popular game modes completely dead due to matchmaking taking hours (which didn’t need to happen)

As one of those new players (albeit one who defaulted to using the server browsers, as I’m still coming from a PC FPS background), is there a secret to using BF4’s server browser? In BFV and BF1 it is extremely easy to find matches through it, but *every* server on BF4 seems to be spoofing their player counts, leading me to constantly join empty games. That’s happened a handful of times in BF1 as well, but it’s not hard to avoid, whereas BF4 seems basically unusable with how frequently the match turns out to be fake, unless I’m missing something.

My absolute favorite part of 2042's matchmaking is it'll put me in an empty lobby on a map I despise (there are a lot of those in 2042), I'll leave to requeue, and then it'll continue to put me in the same dead lobby until I either alt+f4 or am forced to play another game mode. So much more convenient than say BF4 where I can just go to battlelog, click on a server I want to play on with the map and ruleset I like,, and be in the game in 30 seconds despite the game being over a decade old.

But they were impressed by my Tank skills and they needed a tank operator in 5 v 5s. The chat and comm's allowed them to contact me while in game and well that is how I got into competitive BF gaming. We also used to run a practice server for the team. How do teams even do that now? BF1 I purchased, but its not BF, so I didn't play it much. You just nailed the reason this franchise is dying. (Has died) Adding my 2 cents to your vid. I think the other issue Battlefield suffered from admittedly is that its default servers didn't give you variety. You had all these game modes, but nobody would play anything but Conquest, or Rush, depending on which battlefield we're talking about, because the rest of the game modes would be empty, even if they were interested. Sure, Battlefield had a bunch of terrible game modes, but it also had a bunch of fun ones, but nowadays you don't see anything but Conquest. If you wanted to play anything else but Conquest, you could pretty much go screw yourself. This goes back to the variety issue. Also speaking on the shortage of maps, even going as far back as Battlefield 4, you couldn't get every single map in a server queue. I remember because I used to admin a server and I'd have to do reboots once or twice every day to change up the maps that were in the rotation, otherwise we'd be just playing only about 90% of the game's maps. The other issue Battlefield suffered from was that at end of life a year or two after release, they should just give everyone the maps for free. Not necessarily the guns if you still want to charge for the DLC, but restricting the maps kills off all of the DLC maps for those who don't have them. Which in turn splits the player base and shrinks it even smaller. It also shrinks the amount of variety that even players who do pay for the DLC can play. Which goes back to the other issue of Battlefield's game modes. They would frequently make DLC game modes, but it would only be available for DLC maps. So you'd get great game modes like close quarters or air superiority, but they would never get enough gameplay because they're restricted to a single DLC set. That's excluding the fact that there was no mixed game modes lobbies from the get-go, so these game modes basically never got played. Titanfall did this way better, even without a server browser, by making it so that you would just queue into mixed game modes Which kept Titanfall alive for longer, despite the fact that it doesn't have a server browser.

Most of the time we can only play Conquest, across all BF games, though recently there has been a Breakthrough up and active on PC BF5 most late arvo/evenings, but other than that it's just Conquest. Even on 2042, we'd be lucky to get half a server of Breakthrough or Rush XL when it's features on the weekly mode thing. I just miss having variety in this region. Conquest gets so boring so quick.

I don't think politics has anything to do with gaming. Politics is about money ultimately. Which is why they, left right and center, are ruining gaming into another revenue stream instead of fun experience.

We had server browsers in the ps3 for bf3. Matchmaking is not what bf is made for.
@sarunotaslt5 ай бұрын
I don't get the big picture with this centralised matchmaking, allowing community host/rent servers just takes the weight of running a server off EA. Like sure for console matchmaking works quite well since the worst cheats on console are xim/cronus

This is an excellent and important video, and I fully agree with its message. I will share it with the community. I'm concerned that the gaming industry is now focusing on having shorter game life cycles, releasing new titles every year to maximize profits. Capitalism is killing communities, and with it, gaming as we know it :( Hope to see a change in the industry, this kind of videos will help with that
@MKR32385 ай бұрын
no hate but your assessment of the industry is funny because it is the exact OPPOSITE lol you cant release yearly sequels anymore like in the BF refractor days because games are too complex now, and MP games are chasing GAAS, resulting in the same game being played for years they just dont want the community to have any control over the experience anymore
@smokersally64695 ай бұрын
@@MKR3238 no worries and fair enough, Im not an "industry insider", it's just my view as a costumer and gamer. In my industry Im facing the same problems as, I assume, gaming companies do: investors and shareholders pressing down budgets and opex costs, only focusing on optimizing profits on the cost of the existing infrastructure. If it is just a question of control, which motives lay behind that? Control of what? Egoistic game devs who want players to play the game the way they intended? I don't know the answer but it would be way more sad if the core of the problem would be the devs themselves... I more think publishers like EA want this control to be able to shut down games when they want them to shut down so that players move to their next title and they can save the server (opex) costs of old titles. Maybe not every year, but at least when they want to. In the end, this would be then the point I tried to make earlier ;)
@MKR32385 ай бұрын
@@smokersally6469 oh its definitely not the devs but c-suite and people with MBAs trying to figure out how to extract the most out of your customers. lets say custom servers would offer you faster progression so you are less inclined to pay or grind for skins or weapons, thats a big no-no for them. i don't think this is the complete picture but i believe at least part of why Player hosted servers are gone the way of the dodo (with the exception of more niche/pc focused games)

Isn't the portal a server browser? ... I'm confused what you're expecting Edit: Do you literally just not know how to find the server list in Battlefield 2042? Edit 2: Dude have you ever gone to Portal-->browse... It's literally EXACTLY what you're saying isn't in the game.
@TorbisXD5 ай бұрын
Portal does not have official servers in it, and Portal has major issues when it comes to actual community servers. Like next to no admin controls and tools.
@damegataco5 ай бұрын
@@TorbisXD holy fuck I have tried to type out this response like 5x times and keep accidentally closing it after getting like paragraphs in so here's the short version. It makes sense that they need to improve the admin controls as that's a huge oversight, but as far as official servers that's not really as much of a necessity especially if they fixed the previous issue due to there being more accessibility to hardware to maintain a server and fast internet connection than there used to be. I feel the main reason there's not as much of a player base is a much more complex problem that stems from the fact that there's not as much of an interest in playing games online as there used to be. When I say used to be I am referring to back in the day of the infancy of xbox live where most everyone received a free headset with their console and would actually use it. Not only that, but they would do more than just be toxic assholes as being able to chat with new people and also being capable of acting as a team in real-time was something that was not as easy to accomplish as it was before then. These days it's either the novelty has worn off for some people while others just never had the experience of playing online and only having text chat as best to try to work as a team as having a mic wasn't as common or in game chat wasn't really supported while chatting via an external program wasn't as simple as starting a discord call. The last issue is that people don't really need to interact with other folks in the game to interact with others thanks to the capability to stream their game... Who wants to risk chatting with assholes and trolls who will literally just harass people for the lulz (and not playfully like back in the day) when they can just interact with an established streamer audience they've built up over time. So yeah... While the complaints about the server hosting are valid I don't think that's necessarily the main reason why the game wasn't as popular as people expected. Anyways before I find to accidentally delete all this imma end it here.

The first Battlefield I purchased was 1942 and everyone up to BF1. More than likely BF1 will be the last I purchase because of Dice's insistence on woke BS. I want no part of BF5, with it's fairytale "historical" accuracy and 2042 with it "boss babe" nonsense. I want to get lost in the game NOT be constantly bombarded with "the message" by virtue signalling losers. What we spend our money on is the ONLY power we as consumers have and I choose to exercise that power as, we have seen, do many others. The only BF I play multiplayer on is still BF2 and sometimes BF4, especially because of their redone BF2 maps such as Dragon Valley. The one comment about the community server capability, or lack thereof in the most recent games, I will say is that NONE of these recent games will still be being played almost 20 years later because without community server capability on independent providers the game will only last until EA/Dice keeps their servers running. After that you have another useless listing in your Steam or Origin library...
@djnorth20205 ай бұрын
None of the problems with BFV and 2042 have anything to do with "the message". There's no woke blue haired they thems yelling their pronouns anywhere in either game. And there's no discrimination of any minority or majority either. It's a non-issue. But you're 100% on that these modern games will not be played it viewed in positive nostalgia like previous titles.
