The crossover of hobbies + discussion on Art & Science in knives

My crossover hobbies are knives and watches, and I often buy one to complement the other. I also touch a bit on why many of us do the same... the combination of art and science that create the things we love. We crave precision in manufacturing, but we also want some degree of beauty in most cases.

I think this video sums up what's going on with me right now. Always was in love with watches, specifically the mechanical/automatic type. Now that I'm watching your videos, and I got a couple Benchmade knives, I'm finally seeing the same precision and artistic beauty in knives that I saw in timepieces. Currently wearing my beloved Temption Classic and carrying my benchmade 531.

I'm so glad you made this video! I love seeing that there are so many others who get it; knives & watches! I lost my pairings on my Facebook & Instagram, along with my fragrance of the day, my pen & my handkerchief...and some people just don't get it. Most people, it seems. don't get it. My typical pairings are: CRK knife, Accutron watch, Max Madco Bolt Pen, some fancy hank, and then of course a cologne. Thank you for all of your awesome videos!

I can't agree more. I love both blades and watches as well. True quality costs money. I make fine handwriting instruments and people that don't understand craftsmanship nag about the cost of my work. But many don't. The ones that don't know what quality work costs. The same quality exists in blades and watches. Great channel. Subbed

I have taught visual aesthetics in the arts for 40 years to artists, film makers, photographers. I have followed you for years since I am both a watch and knife addict. First allow me to share with you my admiration and high respect for your "aesthetic" in all the forms of objects you collect. You possess a very high taste in fine design and materials and workmanship. Someone once said fine art has no function but to exist for the sake of its own beauty. I marvel at the knives you own and have shared with viewers that in my opinion have no function but exist for sake of their own beauty. I would hope that at some point in your collecting you might write a definitive book on The Aesthetics of Knifes as an art collector would write a serious book on their own collection of art. One more thought…I have visited over the years the knife collection contained in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In face as a kid thats the collection I always remember it was that collection that started me off 70 years ago to by my first knife. Your a terrific guy who has influenced many thousands of men and women, knife makers and raised their "aesthetic" directions in making, owning and appreciating the knife as a work of art. Thank you for that contribution.

Great video :) I am in to EDC in general. Mostly knives, some flashlights, some multi-tools (but mostly just for utility), and a little bit into wallets. On a college budget I have yet to leave the $200 range for folding knives (I have with fixed blades an swords), my regular watch reflects my budget (speaking of Japan) the Invicta 4802. My edc light is acually just about at top for tactical edc, the Fenix PD32 UE. I am breaking the $200 range soon with a Spyderco Tuff in a few months.

Knives and watches mesh well. Meaning through division in space AND time. Shirogorov 95T, Demko AD10 CF Vanax 75, Marfione Custom Matrix & Anax, Spyderco PM2 & Manix 2 (both S90V CF), and Benchmade 940-1 CF S90V for folders. SEIKO SBDC007 "Shogun," Tudor Pelagos, and Grand Seiko SBGA031. Mix and match that lot for a few years before I change or add something. The Japanese are not just "catching up." Spring Drive and the fit & finish on Grand Seiko don't have much of a Swiss comeback as yet, not at that price point at any rate.

Hey Jim. I absolutely LOVE your channel, your videos, and your knife collection!! You sir, have EXTREMELY fine taste in all things. I am also a quality buff. I would love to know. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, I hear that from non-watch folks often. The way I look at it is, a watch is an outward expression of your personality, much like the clothes you choose or the car you drive (or the motorcycle you ride). Looking at my cell phone is practical, but nothing particularly special about it. For many, a watch serves as jewelry. For me it's much more, like stated in the video... I love the intricacies in which they are manufactured, just like my knives.

Love the video just a bit of info you might be well aware of back in early 20th century pocket watch makers use to have an option to add a small knife to the chain on your pocket watch. in some cases these were also automatics Sterling silver ,gold plated and engraved beautiful knives. Old school edc :D

Watches, knives, fountain pens; cameras. Possibly 3 of the most expensive hobbies and one expensive profession. All worth it though. Can't beat the mechanics of my Leica, to the tolerances of a framelock to the sweep of an automatic to the crisp lines of a Parker.

It might come as a shock to those of you with these beautiful timepieces but I don't wear or even own a watch. My mobile phone and car have enough time for me. I can easily break myself on knives and torches without another addiction. Then there's a 1200 Sportster that can be a bit spendy at times:) I have to say you have exquisite taste.

I also believe that Jim has an appreciation of knives and watches because they are unique too him and special to him not just the most expensive. Also, Jim knows a lot about knives not sure you do ( maybe you just like expensive knives like Audemars Piguet, Patek Phillipe,Rolex and appreciate them just for the price).

I think pens and knifes are also somewhat similar, since some pens you can really feel the quality aswell, and they are just beautiful. Also, they are in much more similar price ranges, since watches are way more expensive than either of the two. Oh, also lighters are great accessories in that way. I don't have the funds to get into them big time yet, but will probably get my first brous and first dupont lighter soon.

Its so weird to see someone who spends so much on things that seem so frivolous and justifies so elegantly. Every knife you have on your channel is worth more than I could ever dream of spending on a hobby (on a single item). Its inspiring, many people would piss on the idea of spending $1000 on something that you could spend $50 on and get all the functionality you realistically need. Objectively it is frivolous, but in the end what is a hobby? A hobby is an interest that is for you and only you. Why do you spend your entire life working? To be able to do what you want to do. Some people are irresponsible and live beyond their means, but if you have financial stability and you spend your extra money on what you love no matter how useless it may seem, its not wrong. Its for you, not them and they can't tell you any differently. Thank you sir.
