The largest crowd of the year so far was pumped up watching the ship Mesabi Miner arriving under the Aerial Lift Bridge from Lake Superior. The ship is 1,000 feet in length and is heading to SMET dock to load coal.

Mike can you increase your volume on your videos???

@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Jeffrey, thanks for the comment brother. I’m using a special microphone to do these videos. When I started doing the videos you could barely hear me because of wind. This microphone is specifically designed to cut the wind out completely. The downside, the volume is not as loud and there is some sound canceling scenarios as well. However, trust me, if I had a standard microphone, you would never be able to hear me with all the wind here in Duluth. I hope this all makes sense. Thanks for the comment. All the best my friend!👍⛴️👊

Why is it listed as Wilmington, Delaware? I'm from Delaware and just curious. We do have a port in Wilmington that international ships unload.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Great question Barbara. Companies incorporate in Delaware because of its corporate-friendly environment, which offers numerous benefits in terms of convenience, tax liability and legal protection for businesses. The ship does not have a port there.

why don't these lakes ships have a more streamlined bow?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Rose, I wish I knew the answer to that question. I’m assuming there a good engineering reason.
@NWtoSFO
@NWtoSFO Жыл бұрын
The reason for no streamlined bow on the lakers is two-fold. Speed is more important for the salties, but bulk cargo loads are more important for the lakers. There’s a good Wiki page regarding “block coefficient” worth reading. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_(watercraft)
@rosewhite---
@rosewhite--- Жыл бұрын
@@vibewithmike It's strange really as the lakes do get high waves?
@rosewhite---
@rosewhite--- Жыл бұрын
@@vibewithmike This seems to be best answer I can find except for saying they are best in shallow areas!: 'Great Lakes freighters are designed with a rounded bow shape for a few reasons. One is that these ships are designed to move large amounts of cargo, and a rounded bow allows for more cargo space. Additionally, the Great Lakes have many shallow areas, so a rounded bow allows the ship to navigate these areas more easily. Finally, the Great Lakes also have many locks and canals that the ships must navigate through, and a rounded bow allows the ships to fit into these locks and canals more easily. While a more streamlined bow shape may be more fuel efficient in open water, the need for increased cargo space, the ability to navigate shallow areas, and the need to fit through locks and canals all weigh heavily in the decision to use a rounded bow shape.'
