I think he reacted nervously to the band mostly b/c he couldn't see what was going on behind him. When we humans hear a sudden, loud noise, it helps us to process if we can observe it, so instantly know what caused it. For him, he couldn't see what was going on behind him, so had to process the loud noise without knowing what caused it. He tried to turn to look but his head was being held looking the other way.

Imagine… a year ago.. desperate Oliver at the auction… he briefly meets a kind man… JR…. auction goes on.. No Sale… Oliver travels to wasteland farm in Texas… no real food.. starving horses… Oliver weakens… dares not lie down… weeks go by… one day - a truck and trailer show up… a man gets out… Oliver is brought out to him.. IT’S The Kind Man!!! It’s JR!!!! Oliver in That Moment Knows JR HAS COME FOR HIM!!! 🐴 JR gets him into strange trailer, Oliver is weak but happy to go!!! 12 hour trip back… knowledgeable JR stops often for loving grass water drinks/breaks. Imagine what Oliver is thinking 💗🐴 💁🏻♂️💗. They make it to new home. Warm bedded private stall with clean water and two types of hay!!!! Loving JR and other loving humans. He is a gift from God for all us to share in love, at a time that maybe we wouldn't all agree on life choices, but Oliver does a great job by showing us to just be still when we are worried about tomorrow. You guys have done so much for Oliver, and if I am a mess watching this on KZbin many states away, then I am sure that you just couldn't be more proud of Oliver. By the way, never said this before, but you couldn't of picked a more perfect name for him. I remember that you just said it as if it already was his name, before you even picked him up. You know what you have to do next , write a childrens book about him. You could call it Oliver's Travels.... or Oliver & Me... or many others. Great Job!! All of you did a great job, great teamwork as a family too.

Well JR ......... We mightve clashed + not always seen eye to eye in regards to Oliver but I have to give credit where + when it's due !! Not many people would've braved that massive crowd with a colt under 3yrs old but not only that, with a colt you've only had for a Yr. I have to admit that after seeing the video you made on behalf of your friend that sadly passed away , to try + raise funds for his wife + young family, my opinion + mindset of the man I perceived you to be was changed. I didn't see an arrogant man at all, I seen an honest, humble, caring, family man. Also have to give praise to your beautiful daughter who just has a calmness about her with horses + for Oliver to fall asleep on her speaks volumes ❣️ . I think that absolutely helped Oliver during the parade bcos she was always in his sights . Congrats bcos for me to change my mindset is actually unheard of so I tip my hat to U JR. Now go + sit down before you fall down !! ( only JR + I will appreciate that private joke, ,bcos the last person he'd be expecting to hear praise from is myself) Kat, Scotland 🏴

This was super awesome. Oliver's body language was just screaming how proud he was to do a great job for you and how he was feeling that this was just what he was born to do. If this first parade is any indication you have a fine show horse, who, over time as he gets more experiences is going to win allocates. Add his rescue story to that and he may well end up famous. Someone needs to write a book about Oliver and how he got from a sickly auction horse to his first parade in such fine shape. I am sure that as the years pass, Oliver will have adventures that create a whole series of books! The proof of Oliver as not just a good carriage horse, but a parade and show horse is that given the fact he is not yet 3 and faced on this parade route all manner of things that he could not have been prepared for, from the size and noise of the crowd, flags and banners being waved, the decision of a woman to run from one side of the street to the other in front of a horse, and many other things and he acted like a horse that had been driving in parades for years. It's interesting to see that he quickly had figured out how posted stop streets and cross streets worked, the car goes by and then he can cross, but he now needs more time traveling downtown to come to understand stop lights. Tip: to get our horses desensitized to bands and their marching rhythms, and loud music in parades, because horses don't hate it, they just don't understand what it us, we would take horses we were getting ready to use in parades down to our local high school on days they had outdoor practice. Initially we would walk them around about a block or so away to let them get used to the racket, and then on subsequent visits we moved closer and closer, and eventually bringing them up to the side line area where on game day vehicles that were needed would park. During practice the gate was closed so the band was safe incase the horse was not as desensitized as we thought and acted up as the last thing we want is a panicked horse running across a practice field. Most if our horses got very used to the band quickly and after a few weeks were either unfazed and just ignored the band while a couple actually started stepping to the cadence the band kept while marching, which is pretty nice to see when actually on parade and the horse hears the drum cadence and they start moving with it. There is also no reason to back away from taking him in bigger parades as well as he handled this one. Yes, it stressed you out as it was larger than expected but Oliver proved he could adapt. I would wait a few years before taking him to something like the Macy's parade, but taking him to this one and others of thr same size would continue to be great experience for him.
