They have both told lies about the situation but at the end of the day kate was still kidnapped and went through trauma and jeanette still didn't see her but yet is the most hated girl in her city (going off of this specific theory) If it's true that would mean neither of them are lying and that they're both right. I think it's a really good idea.

@@Ariana-vr9tg don't take it personally, I just don't think it makes sense. We know the basic layout of the house and basement. She has access to the basement door so, she's not down there behind some mirrors. The only mirrors we've seen down there are on the closet door, and we know she isn't kept in the closet. So where would these mirrors be in the house for it to make sense? They would have to be somewhere that Kate has only seen the one side of, somewhere that Jeanette could see them. I know you aren't saying it's true. I don't know what's true either. But I'm curious if you have any ideas for how the mirror theory could work. Where the mirrors would be?

As someone that got into Cruel Summer BECAUSE I adore Froy's acting and wanted to see more of it, I was compelled with and pulled towards Jamie's character right off the bat. I read into him a lot more than I probably should've and developed an INSANE attachment and empathetic attitude towards his character. As Froy said in a rewind for episode 6 (maybe?), Jamie coped with the trauma of losing Kate differently than most others around him. Not everyone is the best at processing trauma and their emotions, and though Jamie is a sensitive person, I don't think he's very emotionally intelligent. So, while he was busy self-destructing and hopelessly searching for his girlfriend, Jeanette served as a comfort and as an outlet for his intense yet unexplored feelings. Trauma brings communities together in ways that they otherwise never would have, which is seen with Jeanette and Jamie. They establish a bond and an understanding that Kate and Jamie never got around to developing because there never was a traumatic event that brought them together. Kate and Jamie seemed to be more of the cliche, appearance-based couple that only really dated because they were of equal status. Jeanette and Jamie were much, much realer and I think Jamie loved (even if the term is used lightly) Jeanette because he allowed himself to be more vulnerable and honest around her. I think losing two important people in the span of two years as you're developing had a massive effect on him that is often overlooked. Jamie's change in behavior and mentality from '94 to '95 is truly admirable and, if at all, he deserves credit for identifying the problem and trying to make amends. I'm still trying to understand why he was "stalking" Jeanette in episodes 1 and 2 (lmk if you do know), but I think that comes out of an inner-hatred and alliance with Kate. He very clearly cared for Kate, which is why it's so difficult to figure him out. I hope we get a little bit more of Jamie's story and how him and Jeanette came to be in episodes 8-10. Jamie is a people-pleaser, and though I'm glad he was held accountable for his actions and was forced to come to terms with that, I think it's easy to feel sympathetic towards him if you focus in on his character.

Just was about to point out the same reason that I had thought he was stalking or more so just waiting for a chance to be able to see & talk to Jeanette, like he finally was able to do in the most recent episode (8)... Jaime having a gun with him, in the glove compartment in his car though, I believe that's "Annabelle" and out of guilt for not being able to protect Kate from Martin, he is hiding it for her because that's the gun she used to kill him with. When Jeanette asked Jaime who he believed now, I think he knows more than he's letting on and he just doesn't want to cause anymore harm to anyone else that he cares about, but deep down believes & knows that Jeanette's innocent

and i think that because that trauma of kate missing brought him and Jeanette close because she was there for him when he needed comfort, he felt hurt and betrayed when he found out that she didn't help kate meaning she never actually cared abt her and was using it as a way to slide in and take advantage of how he was feeling which is why he hit her bc he was in shock and didn't have much time to process it. (not defending him hitting her, either way that's a shitty thing to do but ur comment made me think of his thought process in doing that)

Also I wonder if Kate had never been kidnapped, would Jamie and Jeanette still may have had a relationship? He did seem interest in her and did actually notice her in detention and then afterwards outside they talked a little. The whole reason she took over Kate's persona was because she felt invisible, not popular like her mom supposedly was and wanted to feel pretty and seen.

I agree with the theory that Martin has lived or witnessed some kind of physical abuse exercised on a loved one, and put Kate in the basement to "protect "her". I think that Annabelle could be the name of his ex-girlfriend/sister that he deems he failed to protect. Mallory is so sketchy, she probably has something to do with all this.

So I had no idea Cruel Summer existed until I seen it on Hulu and I thought it was a Hulu original. I then continuously seen it on tik tok, Facebook, Instagram, KZbin and even on tv while I was at work. So I decided to watch it and here I am. That’s why I don’t see it as underrated because people are being pulled into the show. Millions of people. Like my aunt is even invested and she’s in her 40s.

The theory about Martin having an ex girlfriend named Annabelle who committed suicide would make a lot of sense. Since he couldn’t save her, he tried to save Kate and in during so created the “Annabelle” identity for her. But it would also be interesting if Kate used the character of Annabelle to disconnect from the traumatic situation. Either way, I hope the show chooses to explore dissociative disorder.

I honestly don't know what more this show could do in season 2 besides try to fill in more holes but we already know everything that happened so as much as I enjoyed the show, I don't see a need for a second season, though this does make me wonder what they will do for season 2. I wonder if they have the same cast but replace the characters like in "Tell Me A Story". Otherwise I guess they could delve more into Kate's captivity and how Jeannette's life changed after Kate's disappearence, but I kinda already feel that there isn't too much more we need to know. We know Kate fell for Martin and then when she tried to leave, he locked her in the basement. We know Jaannette essentially took over Kate's life and before she knew she was in Martin's house and that she left her there when she could have freed her or atleast called the police.

So, there’s a theory that when Jeanette goes down into the basement and looks into the mirror, Kate is on the other side, thus it being a two-way mirror; Kate can see Jeanette, but Jeanette can’t see Kate. That way, neither girl is actually lying, because Jeanette *was* in the house, but she couldn’t see Kate - which helps her story a little - but Kate saw Jeanette and thought Jeanette could see her as well, but didn’t help her - which kind of helps her as well. Hope that helps! 😄👌🏽
