With the largest Cuban American populations in the country, it's no surprise the Cuban sandwich reigns supreme in South Florida. The ham, cheese, and roast pork combo is not to be missed during a visit to the Sunshine State. Sanguich de Miami makes the legendary Cuban sandwich almost entirely in-house, which isn't the case at every Cuban restaurant. From the seven days its cooks spend brining ham, to the pickles they make in-house, to the Cuban bread specially made by a local bakery, every ingredient in this sandwich is intentionally prepared and cared for.

After living in Miami for 7 years, and now living in the Pacific Northwest, the intense craving for a true Cubano is constant. There is a food truck 30 miles away that does something like a Cuban, but its not the same. They don't even use Cuban bread. This weekend, I'm going to be making the Cuban bread from scratch to see how if I can. Eventually, I'll be able to make this entire thing at home.

Sometimes you will find a restaurant so secure that they will show you completely the how and why. Their pride in their heritage shines through. They simply wanted to do this accurately. Watching this made me realize on my last trip to Miami that I went to the wrong restaurant. Their sandwich looked correct, but wasn’t good. When you find someone that says don’t put the mustard and pickles together....they demonstrate understanding. Next time I will come here. Price won’t matter. Luckily we do have one place in Dallas with a good Cuban. Small Cuban population I suppose. Damn this pandemic! I need to go right now!

The only thing I don’t agree with is the pan con bistec, which is way not traditional. It is a good sandwich though but everything else is traditional but elevated. The owners are there all the time and it shows.

Correction The Cuban sándwich is not of Miami origins. The Cuban Sándwich has been around long before the 1959 cuban revolution brought throngs of exiles to Florida. The Cuban Sándwich comes from Tampa and goes back 100 years as immigrant Cubans came to Tampa to work in its Cigar industry in Ybor City. The Segunda Central Bakery with its 105 year history and a still a staple in Ybor today can boast that historic claim. So all due respects Miami but its a Tampeño Sandwich.

True fact: the Cuban Sandwich originated in the cultural district of Ybor City in Tampa, Florida. It follows the basic structure: roasted pulled pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and dill pickles. In some stores or restaurants, they also add Genoa salami to honor the Italian immigrants that also settled in the area. The Bread is important, but it has to be baked a certain way, with the use of a palm leaf to give it the signature crevasse in the top crust. Certain bakeries in Tampa -- chiefly La Segunda and Alessi's -- carry this tradition to give our local Cuban Sandwiches their distinct look. I don't doubt that folks believe they're getting authentic Cubans in Miami, but if you want to get the ORIGINAL and AUTHENTIC sandwich, you can find them in Ybor and many other places here in Tampa.

After I watched “Chef” I came up with my own recipe. My ex-wife’s family used to roast a pig in la caja china, so I knew what seasonings to use. The Cuban sandwich made in Miami is different from the Cuban made in Tampa. In Tampa we have the "real" Cuban bread and not what looks like a standard "hoagie" roll we also use salami, pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard which is then pressed. La Segunda Bakery in Ybor City ( Tampa ) has been baking Cuban Bread for 110 years and the Cuban sandwich started around 1920 to feed the workers in the cigar factories in Ybor city. The Miami Cuban sandwich did look good, but for sure if you ever taste Tampa Cuban bread you will know the difference. *** And the debate goes on - who makes a better Cuban sandwich *** Tampa or Miami LOL

A Cuban sandwich (Spanish: Sándwich cubano es) is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich that likely originated in cafes catering to Cuban workers in Tampa[1][2] or Key West,[3] two early Cuban immigrant communities in Florida centered on the cigar industry. Later on, Cuban exiles and expatriates brought it to Miami,[2] where it is also very popular. The sandwich is made with ham, (mojo) roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes salami on Cuban bread.[1][4][5][6][7] Salami is included in Tampa, where there is a large Italian population, but is not usually included in South Florida.[8][9][10]

This is an example of what America does and why America is great. The mixture of cultures is definitely one of our strengths. Assimilation doesn't mean you completely reject your heritage or allow someone to make you ashamed for being from somewhere. Assimilation means pulling together for the common good - not tearing down history and breathing hatred toward people who are not like yourself. Assimilation means JOINING the civilization and not replacing it with some idealized nonsense that has never worked anywhere else in the whole world. It doesn't matter where you're from or how you got here.

Tony, if you had a Cuban at La Segunda you had one of the best if not the best. Miami will not really compare as they do not have the same "Cuban bread" as La Segunda and use what looks more like a hoagie roll.

Around the same time - about 1896 - a Sicilian named Francisco Ferlita created a new bread at his Ybor City Joven Bakery. It was a little like a French baguette, about three feet long with a hard, crispy crust and a soft, airy inside. The top was scored with a palmetto leaf to create a canyon down the middle of the loaf. It was square on the ends and usually shortened with lard. He called it Cuban bread. Though no hard proof exists, anecdotally the mixto became popular on Cuban bread. Thus the modern Cuban sandwich was born. The preparation is simple, but specific: Cut the bread in half, then layer ham, mojo-garlic marinated roast pork, and salami, in that specific order. Then add swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard spread on top. Lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and whether or not to press the sandwich are still topics of heated debate.
