ShinyShilla They mean the development of Cube World has become such a step backwards, that the "Beta" that was released recently looks more like how Cube World Alpha would be, had that not already existed. Also, past tense? It is still playable, it's still fun and it's beautiful.

17:00: Ha, yeah, to be fair, even for example me, who isnt a Cultist, thought it was a Prank at first and/or the Update had been Halved. I certainly thought that. I mean, the Oceans and Seas alone, were so much emptier. Once, they were so much more Alive than now, but they all got removed. I mean, even things that were in the game and were just so simple no one could even have a Reason to hate them, were removed: Like Pet Food for Slimes and Imps. In the Alpha, they could be tamed, but not anymore FOR NO REASON. Who wouldnt think that is a Joke? Well, it wasnt. Wow. You know, one could wonder if his Depression maybe made him wish we are depressed too, but let's be honest, that's a laughable Reason to ruin your own game. But even if that were the Case - WHAT WAS HIS WIFE DOING? Did she just let him delete the Updated Alpha in a Stroke of Madness, and let him start all over again?!? Where's his Family in all this? Just wondering...

I mean, personally, I was having fun with the game in beta - so much that I played for four or five hours straight in my first sitting. I obtained my boat early on and started to use it practically everytime I entered a body of water. Eventually I did this on the ocean, seeing a volcano just off sure on my minimap, and halfway there? My boat vanishes. "What? What just--" I turn back, my boat becomes usable again, as the Region's title flares on my screen. Oh no. I alt + F4'd, and that was that. I haven't touched it since.

That single 'feature' of the game is probably its biggest flaw. Why would anybody EVER want region-locked core gear? I get that you can region lock stuff like teleportation so you don't just teleport anywhere, but weapons, mounts? Ridiculous.

And then, in a stroke of Madness he deleted it and started all over again... The funniest thing is that we actually don't know this. We don't know if he really deleted it, we just know it's possible. This is my theory: at some point, he was overwhelmed with features and mechanics that didnt worked together. Maybe he encountered a very important flaw within his code or (what i think happened) the game was completely unbalanced and he, being a single guy, couldnt came out with a solution or a better idea/concept (this is what happens when you don't have ANY feedback and you REFUSE to work with other people for so many years) and he just simply said "fuck it" and removed and changed EVERY mechanic that was giving him some problem.

I never played the game but from what you've told, this sounds like a classic case of feature creep and developer burnout. It's a trap that relatively new developers fall in all the time as a matter of fact, most of the job of scrum masters and product owners in software development is to prevent feature creep. It sounds like this good looked at the feedback after the alpha and said, "fuck yeah, people loved my game's alpha! I'll add 50 different unique system and make the best game ever!" few years down the line, he ended up with half a dozen buggy barely working systems and he was already burnt out of the project. So he decided to just rip out the problematic parts and leave the working ones behind and release the progress in the hopes of people's reaction spurring him to action and removing the burnet out status. Doesn't look like that happened. I wouldn't hold my breath for him to fix the game. He's probably sick and tired of looking at voxel graphics now. Let this be a lesson for any indie developer. Even if you are 100% capable of developing the entire game by yourself, get another developer involved in the project. The othert dev doesn't have to be very good. Tbh, just a sounding board is all you need. But working on a project by yourself for years and years is a surefire way to get feature creep and also burnout.

This isn't unique to just came developers, scientists and engineers also face burnout while researching/developing new ideas. For examples, when building a circuit to drive my robot, I have the concept in my head as to how the robot will interact with the world, but sometimes I'll want to develope the circuit to do other things as well or I'm unable to get one portion of the circuit to work. My wife (who has no knowledge when it comes to IC's) is often the person I'll just talk to about the problems I'm having or features I want to include, and just talking to her helps me to streamline the design process.

But the game is still development, after all this criticism wollay will be incited to fix it, maybe. *Edit*: I made a list of all the possible mods. -Better respawn -XP and levels -Skill Trees -Unlockable Attacks -Better Weapon Customization -Better UI -No region locking -Better Artifacts and Stats -Better World Generation -Building and Furnitures -Commands -Old Style Map -Better Multiplayer Compatibility -More classes, specializations -Better NPC trading -Better pets -Class Loots from bosses

@@Jempai We're used to it now, because so many developers use the free-to-play model, or release the game in early Access to help fund the development of the game, which is costly. But in general it is not necessary for the developer to include future versions of the game, if you buy an alpha build. Notch did so, famously, with minecraft. This worked out and since then other developers and gamers have caught on to that. But even he discussed it with his lawyer beforehand because he wasn't sure whether that was a good move. At the time it was not as common to see games released early, and when they did it wasn't unheard of to pay like 10 bucks for an alpha build but still buy the full game when it came out. But usually games were only released to the public when the open Beta hit and the game was already almost finished. As a last note, just because you're getting something for free twice doesn't lessen the generousness of the second giving.

11:48 I apologize in advance to the dev, but that has got to be one of the most absolutely ridiculous and nonsensical feature in an open-world game that I have ever heard of. In what possible way is restricting the use of all gear you find to small sections of the world good design? What logical reason prevents the player from using said gear?
@felipevasconcelos6736
@felipevasconcelos6736 5 жыл бұрын
If you kept some gear it could work. Or maybe if experience actually did something useful. Restricting the use of your gear to small sections of the world would force the players to develop new strategies, but the way it’s done makes everything you did before negligible, you might as well create a new world.

@MinishDude
@MinishDude 5 жыл бұрын
The primary reason for that is.... replay-ability. In the Alpha, "infinite progression" was tangential, and once you got good gear there really was nothing left to do... end game was just killing bosses and grinding for slightly better gear. When you get 5-star gear in a biome, you're pretty OP compared to most mobs, so there would be almost no challenge. Now there is always a challenge, but little incentive to keep playing.... Pretty much, if a friend decides to do drop-in co-op when you go into a new region, even if you've invested 100s of hours into playing the only advantage you'd have is movement speed or lantern radius. You can't carry somebody if you're also in a new region. There is one notable exception to this that,:if you wanted to, you can grind for gear where the name ends with "+" that maintains it's power for all adjacent regions to the one you obtained it in. Then you could use that gear to farm for + gear in the neighboring regions, etc., and slowly expand your reach without much of a challenge.

Residual enjoyment from progression, replaying as many characters in many worlds is what kept the Alpha going even though it was barebones. Some people sunk in as many hours as Borderlands fans do in the BL games and that's without it having any kind of a story. Perhaps in some alternate timeline some of those smaller areas could have been made into self contained plots with a set of missions, with special story items. You finish it, you can find another "story" area or grind in the open world areas.

You know what game would mesh so well with Cube World? Terraria. The items and progression combined with the bosses would give Cube World a true progression system. Combined with the quests, lore, and fast travel today in the beta update of Cube World, would make the game a near masterpiece. Just make bosses locked to certain dungeons and exclusive items (like having a exclusive iron sword out of many item swords) behind special crafting recipes. It’s a rough, out of mind onto the table idea, but it could work so well

Kochlor Well terraria’s grind is mostly optional. And it being unfun is pretty subjective, as I personally enjoy the terraria grind, most essential items are obtainable through a good half hour of grinding, and items like the rod of discord are helpful, but if you don’t want it/need it, you don’t have to grind for it. Cube World is unfortunately very bare bones, even in the beta stage, and adding a simple crafting/better grind system would be a good step to a better game, because you still grind in the CW beta, but the gear is just pointless with region lock

All that was required was simple additions of more assets like enemies, bosses, items, animals, biomes, quests, spirit cubes, etc. Like Minecraft, could add in portals to different dimensions or seeds as endgame. Or add more crafting, like being able to build a house in one of the cities or villages. To respond to the “this version is a prank and the real game will be released” comment / conspiracy. Yes it probably would bring huge huuuge joy to players, that is also how you destroy a fan base, that is how you get players to leave and not return to the game, it is a horrible marketing strategy, developers don’t hide that the release is a prank for years at a time and long times after the launch of the game, it is just a stupid decision, it doesn’t make sense. Hopefully the developer learns from the outrage of this and fixes the game to be something truly interesting, and for how long we have had to wait, I think we deserve it. I remember seeing this game when I was a kid! I’m almost out of high school now! Thats a pretty long time!

Personally it kind of pisses me off that there are people shitting this game out of existence for absolutely no reason. For starters stop the "this game took 6 years and it's garbage" complex because heres what I sum all of you into. Either A. you've just heard of this game and you're just here to bandwagon. B. You have waited since alpha but because the game wasn't what it was like in the alpha (like most alphas are, games change drastically) you're just throwing a needless hissie fit without deeply looking into the actual wonders this gem holds. The new cube world isn't a bad game, not in the slightest, youre just looking/playing it with the wrong mindset. As I stated before, this game has a lot of heart and soul into it, you can feel the passion, even if it's...well...idk....A BETA EARLY ACCESS GAME, you know, AN INCOMPLETE GAME. "Wollay is an honest guy" EHHHHHH... I'm not sure I would go that far. Honestly, his lack of communication makes it impossible to actually understand what happened here. Was it a scam? Was it anxiety? Was it just not caring about the project anymore? No one will know because he never says anything. Then people annoyingly defend his lack of communication. Look, I get social anxiety myself, quite badly, but if you want to start publishing work to a public forum you need to form some level of communication competency. I think Wollay has the talent and skill to make a good game, but he lacks the spine and willpower to deal with the same public he intends to release it to. Just another tragedy I suppose. Its just a shame it took 6 years of his life and everyone else's to realize it.

It was a scam. When you promise to do something, you have to do it unless if not doing it poses more dangers. @@friendlyperson8016 I understand what you're saying, and I won't try to defend Wollay at this point, however it does seem a little emotionally charged. I do believe it's a scam, whether he intended it to be or not, but I'd hardly say he ruined hopes and dreams, or made people suffer. It is a video game at the end of the day, and there will be more to come in the future. Also, releasing the product for free, spending the resources to add modding support and then just leaving as if to commit a form of virtual seppuku is just not business logical in any way. In fact, I still hadn't even obtained my first artifact, so I didn't know how little they affected the overall stats of the player. What you're telling me to do is forego this newfound information for my original, uniformed opinion. That's like saying you liked a terrible movie because you've only seen the one scene that's well made.

@@TheKeksadler I think you shouldn't get your expectations low. The game is definetely better now than before. It gives you a different look at an RPG which some people just can't accept. I am sorry for not fully understanding your comment I am really pissed that people are hating on Wollay when he didin't do much wrong. It's an amazing game especialy after the update.

I'm a year late but hopefully this helps. I am a solo indie developer of over 5 years now, project fatigues is a KILLER. The best way to avoid such a disaster like this is plainly not announcing the game/project until you have a very good an substantial basis to the game and a semi solid plan for execution post announcement. I have been working on my project for 2 almost 3 years and although I discuss it I never officially announce it as I unfortunately do not have a solid enough basis yet. This actually is the case due to changes in vision, my game has gone through 3 or 4 redesigns at this point and I needed to go though the reiterations to finally land on a concept I can roll with nearly without effort. Game dev in the early stages is hit or miss, trial and error. Be patient on announcing/ releasing into early access, best advice I could give to avoid another Cube World situation

This is like an inverse of Daemon X Machina, where the developers actually sought input from players to improve the game. Its first demo was poorly received, but its final result made people happier. A smalltime indie developer, creates a successful indie alpha, and spends years making mistakes and sabotaging the bottled lightning they had.

I think that everything that he add was a great ideia, but poorly executed. Instead of Regional locker, it should be Regional Bonus: all the gear u get in that region would have a little buff, and out of that region, it would lose the buff, but still have the same stats. Instead of the Artifacts giving um +1 in movement stats, it should comes to the player choose where to put that +1(or more): by that, wolay could bring the skill tree back. Exp and Artifacts could co-exist, levels would give u +1 and artifacts +1(or more): two ways to progress.

Your idea was close to mine. If you played wow in the not so recent years, at some point, the goal od the devs was to make the players plays less for health issues. So they made a negative feedback loop, that made players win less and less xp the longer they played in one session. But ppl were pissed, so instead, they made a poditive feedback loop, where people that took a break could get more xp for a while, encouraging taking breaks while buffing instead of nerfing. He need to think about a positive feedback for exploring
