In 2002, original Doors members Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek reunited and formed a new version of The Doors called “The Doors of the 21st Century”. Ian Astbury, frontman of The Cult, became the lead vocalist for this reformed lineup. Stewart Copeland of The Police played drums but was replaced after breaking his arm.

I fell in love with this band in 1987 when I watched them blow Billy Idol (pretty cool in his own right) off the stage. This song ruled MTV in the summer of 89 and the album Sonic Temple was the anthem to my senior year of high school. I've seen them live over 30 times coast-to-coast and they never disappoint, even 35 years later. In the summer of 2022 I finally got my 20-something daughters to come to a show and see what their dad had been blathering on about for their whole lives. They got it. If you want another dose like this one, watch the OMV for "Wild Hearted Son" and for a change of pace, check out "Edie (Ciao Baby)".

They have a good number of "good tunes (Cult musts)" to try: She Sells Sanctuary __ Sweet Soul Sister __ Edie (Ciao Baby) __ Rain __ Love Removal Machine __ Lil' Devil __ and Wild Flower. They were favored by many of us in the second half of the 80's. Then they seemed to get overshadowed by the Grunge era at the start of the 90's. But their stuff is still classic and will always be good.

In fact, he went to my high school Glendale and was in grade 9 with one of my older sisters there and his younger sister Leslie was a year behind me there. In elementary school he went on a class trip to a First Nations reserve just outside of Hamilton and it affected his out look and yes his fashion style too! Cheers!

They came out of the English Goth scene. That's why they aren't so well known, because they didn't fit into the regular Metal market as well. We weren't expecting them, and it was kind of astonishing how hard they rocked, coming from the same subculture as The Cure and Jesus & Mary Chain. What you're seeing is the singer especially letting his inner Rock Star out, while still wearing Goth clobber. Completely YOLO.

The Cult are a British band formed in the early 80's... originally called Southern Death Cult in 1981. The Cult were essentially the duo of Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar)... a perfect example of 2 musicians who never got along personally, but could create great rock music... The Cult was never a 'glam' band but they stood out as one of the best bands of the 80's decade. Lead vocalist was a showman in Southern Death Cult and guitarist Billy Duffy was impressed w/ the singer when he joined the band... They renamed themselves The Cult by 1983 and released their debut album 'Dreamtime' w/ Jamie Stewart (bass)... and a succession of drummers that included Kiss drummer Eric Singer and Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum. It was their 2nd album 'Love' in 1985 that made The Cult a huge band w/ the single "She sells sanctuary"... 🤘🤘and it went gold (half million copies) in the US... (The opening track was 'Nirvana' by coincidence... 90's bands cited The Cult as an influence) However, The Cult was a wreck behind the scenes w/ Astbury and Duffy constantly at odds... A 3rd album 'Peace' was recorded but scrapped... Producer Rick Rubin was approached to record a new album in 1987 and 'Electric' was released that year - it became a huge hit selling platinum in the US and scoring the big single - 'Love removal machine'... 🔥🔥 On tour, The Cult was becoming more volatile w/ Ian Astbury drinking heavily and destroying the band's equipment... Still, The Cult scored their biggest album 'Sonic Temple' in 1989 ... produced by Bob Rock (who produced Motley Crue, Metallica, The Offspring, Bon Jovi, etc.) w/ 'Fire Woman' becoming a huge single. Other hits included the ballad 'Edie (Ciao baby)' ... the rocker 'Sweet soul sister'... It sold platinum in the US as The Cult continued touring, but bassist Jamie Stewart left the band... weary of the constant infighting. The Cult released 'Ceremony' in 1991 and the self-titled album 'The Cult' in 1994... w/ record sales declining in the 90's and both Astbury & Duffy against each other... The Cult split up in 1995. Eventually, Astbury and Duffy reconciled in 1999 to tour as The Cult again and released a new album 'Beyond good and evil' in 2001 w/ Matt Sorum on drums and Bob Rock producing once again, but sales were disappointing and The Cult split up again in 2002. In 2007, The Cult reunited again w/ Astbury & Duffy hiring John Tempesta (drums), who had played in a number of bands, including - Exodus, Testament, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, etc... Their next album 'Born into this' was another underrated record as The Cult returned to touring... This time, record sales mattered little as The Cult found their tours selling out in the next decade... They were reluctant to release new music because of record label situations, but released a new record 'Choice of Weapon' in 2012... followed by the album 'Hidden City' in 2016... 'Under the Midnight Sun' in 2022... The Cult were in better terms internally and on demand on tour and record... A new album by The Cult will likely be out in 2024. More songs by The Cult - 'Wild flower' ... "Lil' devil" ... 'Rise' ... 'Sun King' ... 'Revolution' ... 'Wild hearted son' 🔥🔥🤘🤘

You know why 80's metal and music in general sound so great? Three words: No Auto Tune. These bands had to reproduce the songs from the record on tour without pitch correction, backing tracks, or most of the electronic assistance used today in the studio or live shows. No amount of gagetry can replace talent. There are some new artists that can pull it off without assistance, but not many. This was a time before background dancers or video screens, and the artists had to be able to entertain their audiences all by themselves, with the exception of Pink Floyd and, to some extent, ELO. You should check out any live performance of Pink Floyd the Great Gig in the Sky or Comfortably Numb. I think you'll be astonished by the fusion of video, electronics, musicianship, and 100% real vocals.

You notice the first guitar solo. It's super simple, but so incredibly effective. There is no better guitar part that can be played in that spot. Then the rest of the song, forget about it. This song was huge when it came out and all that success was rightly deserved. This song is a banger.

The Cult one of my faves since 1988. Saw them live in 1990 and met Ian for a moment in 1996. I kept my hair long for 10 years specifically due to Ian's influence. Their album "Electric" (produced by Rick Rubin), might be my favorite rock n roll album ever. Written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy. They are the permanent members of The Cult. They still tour and record today. Recorded in Little Mountain Sound ⛰ Studios, Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦. Produced by Bob Rock. The Cult was displeased with the previous album and its producer Rick Rubin. Thus, The Cult spent time in Vancouver with Bob Rock. The Cult was pleased 😎 with his work with Motley Crue. As for Bob Rock, he was the engineer for the late producer Bruce Fairbairn, RIP. They recorded with Loverboy, AC/DC, Prism, Whitesnake, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. Bob Rock quit the partnership. He produced Motley Crue. Bob Rock is still in demand. He produced with or for Bryan Adams (they go way back), Michael Buble, The Offspring, Veruca Salt 🧂, Tal Bachman, Voivod and Metallica. Vancouver was 1 of the places for recording in the 1980s. Many of these musicians had hit songs with Bob Rock, Bruce Fairbairn, Jim Vallance, David Foster and/or Bryan Adams. I was there! 😎 But I never met any of these musicians, I think. 😢. In the studio 🎙, Mickey Curry is on drums 🥁. Before this song, he played with Andy Taylor, Steve Jones, Bryan Adams and Hall and Oates. John. Webster is on keyboards 🎹. He played with Red Rider, Aerosmith, Andy Taylor and Steve Jones. Suggested videos 📹: 1 The Cult performs Sun King 2 Aerosmith performs Dude Looks Like a Lady 3 Veruca Salt performs Volcano 🌋 Girls 👧
