If you think Broberg is going to be a 5+ million dollar, top 4 Dman in a few years, you have to bite the bullet and match. Young Dmen like this are almost impossible to acquire in a trade, even with an overpay. It just really depends on if you think Broberg can be good enough to replace Ekholm on the left side in the top 4 in a few years or not.

I don’t know why you’re saying the Blues are getting these two for next to nothing. However, Broberg only played 8 games last year and Holloway doesn’t hasn’t shown anything, consistently, that puts him above a third liner on this team. We’ve got a couple of guys in the minors that might be as good by the time the playoffs roll around. And he’s frequently injured. Broberg is a good looking D man though. I know it’s all kosher and it’s just business but it still seems kind of cheesy that the players are negotiating with another team and they know it will hamper the Oilers chances to win a cup. Whether they stay or go. I’d let them both go. If Broberg stays and doesn’t have a good start to the season, he’ll be under a lot of pressure to perform. He could become the new whipping boy. I’m curious to see how the Oilers respond.

I don't know why it would be a real surprise to anyone. . Why would a team NOT make such offers?? 2 players who you could pick up who you know can play NOW, are just at the start of their skill level, are very young, who's upside is tremendous, and who you could get at a discount. I'm only surprised that just the blues had the foresight/ability/ and the disregard for the standard convention to make the offers. "Gentlemen's agreements" only go so far in this world. Just ask Lowe (Penner).

These guys, laugh and snicker at the LTIR dance NHL teams are doing but it's a loophole the league created and it's up to the league to fix it. Until then, if you're not taking advantage of it then you're not doing everything you can do to help your team.

It took awhile for Holland to fix the mess Chiarelli left behind and now Chia and Armstrong emerge to lob a hand grenade into the Oilers front office! Regardless of how the Oilers decide to handle this it has caused a major blow to their plans i'm sure.

Isn't Tyson Barrie still available. Couldn't you try signing him at league minimum and move out Ceci for a draft pick. Barrie at league minimum on the 3rd pair is better than Ceci at his price. And gives you some extra cap space.

Call it a cup tax. Hate to lose Broberg as he was just starting to play to his potential. Holloway hurts less because of the additions made in the off-season. I don’t think this affects the team over-all this year. What hurts is how little they get in return. We just might have to bite the bullet on this one.

The big poblem will be the 2nd year of these deals. Draisaitl and Bouch need money next year. Still puzzled at why Perry was signed for anything over league minimum, or even resigned at all. That money could have went towards holloway. And broberg should have been traded at the draft, if you had a feeling he's not gonna sign cheap. Poor asset management at the end of the day. I'd match Holloway and let broberg walk. Oilers D will survive without broberg. Our forward group is off the charts!

I'm disappointed that both guys (and/or their agents) took these offers without going to the Oilers first. I value the loyalty many of the players are showing. The Oilers will sort it out one way or another and hopefully it doesn't mess up this coming season.

so Oilers have had to spend 4 years developing Broberg and 3 years developing Holloway... (having them play in Bako is a cost - they get coaching etc etc..... & contribute little). Brob has 81 nhl games and Hollo 89 .. both in limited roles, contributing little - until last yr playoffs..... where they finally showed that they had developed and could contribute. Brob used EDM #8 and Holo a #14 first round picks... Shocking that nhl allows StL to raid them like this - providing a 2nd and a 3rd round draft pick... is NOTHING - very seldom even make nhl... so farm team players. These guys have been slow to develop & contribute... have been minus players as young/learning....... but now have to do a major over-pay as StL can get 2 first round picks for almost nothing (slightly overpay 'after developed'' & can better see their potL). This will cause Drais to reconsider if he should take a discount........ when these 2, Nurse, .....Yamo, Campbell, Neal, etc etc... demand over-pay..... Jacksonb then picking Bowman... making mgt look questionable !! Broberg was going to have to make up for Nurse. Nurse has shown can't do playoffs but $9.25m - big problem

The Oiler need to think about what players they need for 4,58 M that can help them win this year, they do not have the luxury to chance for the further, the cup window normally do not last for more than 3 years in my opinion, so they have two years left. Next year Leon Draisaitl probably is 13,5 (8,5 M) so +5 M and if Evan Bouchard (3,9 M) gets 9,5-11 M that is +5,6- 7,1so total of 10,6-12,1 M for next year. These offer sheet really screwed up the chances of winning the cup.

It’s telling, just last pod and as well Staples on Oilers Now he made the argument that if the team wants to win long term and surround 97 and 29 with talent then leaving money on the table is the reality. Flash forward to present day it’s as if both of these men now (Bruce and David) become emotional and forget their own logic and expect the oilers to match an overpriced contract for Broberg to royally screw up the oilers cap system and jeopardize the money set aside for 97 and 29. Beyond ridiculous assessment on this one and generally I like both Bruce and David positions and rationale but disagree here. Oilers should let them have fun in St. Louis and focus on extending 29 long term at a reasonable cap hit.

Oilers face losing two 1st rounders for a 2nd and 3rd, how is that fair? Offer sheets are fair for RFA's who feel stuck, but to make it more fair to teams (inevitably changing GM calculations) there should be higher compensation for the team losing the players, based on their draft position and/or the contract offered.

Holloway signed the offer because of the Oilers signing Skinner, and Arvidson, cause he knew he would be playing 3rd, 4th line minutes. Broberg asked for a trade last year, so how would matching this offer be a good idea, if he doesn’t even want to be here?! NHL needs to protect teams from losing their developed young talent. Teams should NOT be able to offer sheet players under 25!

What I don't get is they only have 7.3 in cap space and the Offers equal $7.5. Means they'd have to burry someone in the minors or make another trade to become cap compliant themselves. I say let them go. Take the picks. If Oilers win the cup now people can stomach a retool. More picks mean more horses in a depleted stable. Bouchard needs to be resigned. And he'll be the top Dman for years. Broberg was already asking for a trade earlier in the year. Holloway maybe I'd match but they did just add two great forward prospects this off season sooooo

Vets are returning and taking less, star players are negotiating to leave money on the table and these two replacement level production players trying to force the organization to bend over? No get going and I hope Jackson and Bowman come out immediately and make it known that these players are now Blues and no organization is going to force the Oilers to do anything they don’t want to when it comes to disrupting their salary cap. How on earth can Bouchard who is averaging a point a game be expected to take a team friendly deal next negotiation when Broberg would be making more than him on the same roster if he’s kept? The problem is the salary cap, it is far too restrictive. The nhl needs to go to a luxury tax system or something like it.

Other teams seem to manage OK. It was only a couple of decades ago that the Oilers were in danger of getting moved to a bigger market because they couldn't compete. The cap system saved mid-market Canadian teams like EDM, WPG, OTT.
