I don't really see this as a disaster or anything like it. It's a kick in the butt; no question about that, but losing either or both is not the end of the world. They're "nice-to-haves" not "need-to-haves." Both are replaceable at some point in the future.

It's not a question of negotiating, it's a question of pay them the figure on the table or not and I frankly, don't think either is worth it. Take the "pittance" and the saved cap space, bundle them with some other assets and see what you can do.

It will be their last chance. This is the first sign of the decline. Don’t get me wrong, the Oilers definitely have a shot next year. If they don’t make it, maybe they can get one more that is less likely by resigning Draisaitl. That buys them one more year. Even bringing both him and McDavid back probably won’t be enough in 3 years as the depth around them will not likely be adequate to support a Cup run.

Offer sheets are a great tactical weapon that should be used more often. Montreal offer sheeting Aho didn't work but would have been a wonderful deal. Broberg hasn’t looked like anything special until this playoff run. He was a cusp player until the playoffs and I still believe he is. That’s a lot of money for a player with 81 games of experience. He’s also tried to get out of Edmonton on multiple occasions. I say let him go. Do I wish the return was more? Of course but unfortunately until after a few games this playoffs that’s all the guy would’ve gotten you in return anyhow. What if he doesn’t stick in the NHL? 4.5 million is tough to swallow having in the minors.
