For my personal tastes, these earlier, faster, punkier The Cure performances are better than anything that came later. This video is fantastic.

you're right, This is the best way to play the song. But the cure has had over 40 years of great music since then. They really have had a remarkable career, and they're still going. How may of their contemporaries are still playing? I'm not talking about some reunion tour after 30 years either. The Cure have been playing and producing albums non-stop since 1979.

thye were a punk band for a few solid years..some classic stuff, and evolved several times over the years...but Smith never abandoned that era and was more laid back than people took him.

this could've been a completely different band if Robert Smith hadn't played with the Banshees. Robert in the early days wanted The Cure to be like The Buzzcocks and Elvis Costello. I like both Simon Gallup and Michael Dempsey's playing style. The Cure always had a prominent bassline

Had I heard this back then I would of liked it, straight away! The closest I heard anything like this in 1979 was the Pretenders or The Cars, no Cure played on the radio yet. If I depended on the radio to introduce me to new bands, I’d be sooooooooo out of the loop. Thank God for music apps these days!
