I’ve always thought it was the most hilarious sounding keyboard/synth riff I’ve ever heard in modern pop music. But can’t deny it makes the song memorable.

I haven’t seen The Cure in concert since I was 16 years old. I’ve been through so much in my life. I buried their music deep inside along with the memories that were so painful. Tonight, I’m going to their show in Seattle. It’s been 35 years. Thankfully I’m still here and able to enjoy life better now. Thank you to my most favorite band.🥀🖤

Was that the Tower Records location? House my family had when I was born was walking distance to Christown, and I spent a lot of time in the eighties as a small child walking over whenever Mom wanted to get out of the house. I was too young to go into the record store but I remember it being there.

The fact that he’s pulling double duty during this recording as a guitarist with The Banshees, and as a bonus put out a pretty good album as The Glove, really puts Robert Smith alone on the hilltop of creativity and artistic expression while also being unique and good. This song along with "Lovecats" and "Lets Go To Bed" gave The Cure a commercial breakthrough, which was very important for their further existence. Bassist Gallup had just left the band and even Robert doubted that The Cure would stay alive. So they had a dramatic change in style, from the very dark album Pornography and to these "pop"-singles. They were later included in the album "Japanese Whispers".

Considering how recording for Japanese Whispers finished in April 1983, and Blue Monday was released in March 1983... I think the more likely explanation is that as cool new technologies emerge, bands are going to use them and create similar sounds.

I kissed you in the water And made your dry lips sing I saw you look Like a Japanese baby In an instant I remembered everything I called you after midnight Then ran until my heart burst I passed the howling woman And stood outside your door I kissed you in the water And made your dry lips sing I saw you look Like a Japanese baby In an instant I remembered everything Take me for a walk Take me for a walk Let's go for a walk Take me for a walk

Interesting background to this track. By 1983, Robert Smith was looking for a new sound to get away from the Goth style of the previous few years. He decided to go for an electro pop sound with a Japanese vibe. He was impressed by Japan's (the band) Tin Drum album and sort out it's producer Steve Nye to help them. Their collaboration produced this track. Interesting side note, The Cure (known as the Easy Cure at the time) won a talent contest in 1977 and Japan were runners up!

Solo a mí me parece que Robert era una belleza? Me enamora su música pero sin duda estaba bien sabroso en su juventud. 😊❤❤❤

I called you after midnight Then ran until I burst I passed the howling woman And stood outside your door We walked around the lake And woke up in the rain And everyone turned over Troubled in their dreams again Visiting time is over And so we walk away And both play dead then cry out loud Why we always cry this way? I kissed you in the water And made your dry lips sing I saw you look Like a Japanese baby In an instant I remembered everything, everything, everything I called you after midnight Then ran until my heart burst I passed the howling woman And stood outside your door I kissed you in the water And made your dry lips sing I saw you look Like a Japanese baby In an instant I remembered everything, everything, everything Take me for a walk Take me for a walk Let's go in the water Take me for a walk
