Really good video. A few other points: - The Rockets has been dysfunctional for a few years, despite a decent 1990-91 season. Their chemistry was off and there were comments about lots of selfish guard play. - Rudy Tomjanovich took over from Don Chaney as coach in 1992 and he had a great relationship with Hakeem. - Charlie Thomas sold the Rockets to Les Alexander in 1993 which solved a lot of the issues between Hakeem and the front office. - They solved two glaring weaknesses by drafting Robert Horry in 1992 & Sam Cassell in 1993. Horry was a 6’10” College centre. They immediately plugged him in at small forward and his defending, shooting and passing were a massive upgrade on Buck Johnson. Houston actually played ‘small ball’ before it became popular in their second championship run. Horry moved to power forward when Otis Thorpe was traded. Furthermore the Horry for Sean Elliot trade fell though because of Eilliot’s kidney disease. Cassell became the 3rd guard but actually added stability to a volatile & inconsistent Rockets backcourt. In fact he often finished games and was a clutch performer. These moves resulted in Hakeem having much more trust in the organisation, the coaching and the talent around him. The result was he ended up passing a lot more to those guys and to players like Mario Ellie. - The championship years were also when he was at his healthiest i.e. his irregular heartbeat was under control, his orbital fracture was fully healed so he ditched the goggles and his other leg injuries had also healed. Of course a massive factor was that all these events coincided with the brief retirement of Michael Jordan. The Rockets matched up very well with the Bulls so who know what would have happened had they met in the Finals. However MJ denied titles for all time greats like Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Ewing etc. Of the centres that I watched personally, Hakeem was the overall best. Certainly defensively (on his man, in the pick & roll, help defense) I haven’t seen anyone better. His block & particularly his steal numbers are better than the other big men. His domination of David Robinson and his battles against Ewing & Shaq (where he outplayed them) in the Finals were awesome.

I was a huge fan of the Magic with Shaq and Penny in '95 and was so sure we'd win the championship. Hakeem crushed us and the entire city of Orlando. It wasn't just his dominating play on offense and defense, it was his leadership, controlling the pace and tempo of the game, getting his teammates involved. And when I talk about getting his teammates involved, I'm not talking about getting assists, I'm talking about knowing where to post up on the floor to create proper spacing for his teammates to be either open or have the room to move without the ball, moving the ball to get the hockey assists, communicating defensively, etc. He was dominating so many aspects of the game beyond the box score, although he was dominating that aspect as well. In terms of some of the most statistically impressive playoff series performances, look at 1988, the year they lost Sampson. You mention that he lost in the 1st round, but in the 1st round that year against the Mavericks, Hakeem averaged a ridiculous 37.5 PPG on 57% FG, 17 Reb, 2.3 Steals, 2.8 blocks, with only 2.25 TO. Their 2nd best player was Sleepy Floyd, anyone even remember him?

It’s kinda sad because practically every other NBA Page follows that format; taking a 30 for 30 or some obscure documentary about a player or situation from the NBAs past and changing a few words, as well as putting new clips in the background, but telling us the same exact information over and over. Pretty ridiculkhs they get away with it, and not only that; but that they acquire a huge following by doing it. lol

Once he improved his passing and matured in his decision making Hakeem was unstoppable from 92-96. He peaked later than most because he started playing basketball later in life. Him and Ewing both started playing late and Ewing was actually much closer to him skill wise around 89 when Pat was peaking before injuries. But then Hakeem got even better and just bamboozled guys like Ewing and Robinson in the early and mid 90s. As good as they were, he was just better. Robinson was a bit closer than he usually gets credit for and their career average stats are almost identical but the Dream outplayed him in 95 when it mattered most. @@armandodelossantos736 Patrick Ewing's teammates were a joke. In 1991 Vernon Maxwell, Otis Thorpe, & Kenny Smith all averaged over 17ppg. The team won 52 games & still got swept in the first round 😅. In 1992 Otis Thorpe was an all-star 17.3ppg 10.5rbs. Vernon Maxwell averaged 17.7ppg, Kenny Smith had a pretty good season 14.0ppg & 6.9ast all the team missed the playoffs. The three of them were better than the were in 1994 & 1995 yet Houston couldn't win a playoff game in 1991 & make the playoffs in 1992

Bulls had a really tough time with the Rockets in the early 90s. It was a dream / nightmare matchup for both teams. Rockets had their number. Houston wanted that finals matchup..foaming at the mouth for it. Came close to happening in 92/93. Rockets met the Sonics in the playoffs and they were the worst matchup in the league for the Rockets in that era.

I wish I could have talked to you about this before making the video. I live and breathe Hakeem's career. His contract disputes were just the tip of the iceberg when it came to his relationship w Houston. Hakeem is a top 10 player of all time no doubt and many of the kids today have no idea why. Yeah we won 2 titles when Jordan was gone.. but you can ask Jordan who he wanted to dodge every season in the finals. He hated playing Houston for 2 reasons. Maxwell was one player he couldnt get in the head of and who would hound him the whole time. Hakeem also couldnt be guarded by any of the big men on Chicago. Jordan has publically said that he was pleased to see Houston lose to Seattle in the early 90s and late 90s to Utah. Those were the dream matchups that us 90s kids wish we got to experience. I still see Hakeem at Rockets games. He lives in Houston with several business ventures there. By far our greatest player to play for us. And yes... Toronto... was a BIG mistake. He did say he wish he didnt go there for his final year... but it was in the moment. Great video. Glad to see someone make a video about his early years.

@Beatsro Broly 23 and lebron kept missing the Playoffs. Cavs got him almost every single player his soft ass asked for. Had Darius Miles, Zydrunas Ilgauskas who was an All-Star, Carlos Boozer and Ira Newble his rookie season. Got Ben Wallace, Antawn Jamison, Mo Williams, Wally Szcerbiak, Donyell Marshall, Damon Jones, Shaquille O'Neal and could've had Amare Stoudemire but he blocked management from making the trade and got a whole 'nother round of elite players his 2nd sting in cLe. You A1 stupid. 2012 and 2013 finals MVPs dont matter, he ran scared on D-Wade's team when D-Wade proved he could lead *HIS OWN* team to a chip. KD proved he could whoop le3/9ron's ass when he got a squad as did Kawhi. Hakeem > LeBandWagon

@Beatsro Broly 23 they're it is, the Bronsexual signature white-flag of surrender. Resort to name-calling when they've been proven wrong by the facts😂. Replace lebron on those STACKED ASS Heat teams with dozens of Hall of Famers past or present, including Hakeem and they'd have 3 rings minimum💯💯💯💯. Ralph was fragile in college as was UK's Sam Bowie. The thing about pro sports is now you're going from playing 25 30 games in college to playing 82 and you're playing 3 times per week and some people's bodies just can't take that grind.

No amount of highlights can give justice to this man's perfect game. He dominated the era of BIG MEN, not just scoring but also in rebounds, blocks, steals & assists. In todays "cup cake era" as shaq put it, he will easily drop 40-50points a game. If i were to pick between shaq, kareem & hakeem, ill pick dream shake no hesitation.
