Nice piece on Norm. I've been a Laker fan since '65, so I'm very familiar with Norm. I remember being pissed when he was traded. And because of that, never truly accepted Byron Scott. One Stat you overlooked about Norm, he actually lead the team in scoring (w/ Kareem) w/ 20.4 ppg (& 8.1 apg) during the '81-'82 postseason championship run. His 2nd w/ the Lakers. Still to this day, one of my favorite all-time Lakers. Thanks for the memories.

Not a Laker fan but i remember Norm Nixon. I used to be a Blazer fan so i 1st saw him in his rookie yr. To me he sometimes struggled against some of the great guards(at that time) early in his career. But when they got Magic, his career really blossomed. A key figure in those early Showtime championships(1980&1982). Hated to see him get traded for Byron Scott. To show how great he was, he actually made the Clippers competitive. When he blew his knee, he was never the same and the Clips fell off rapidly. Great player though...a lot of younger basketball fans(under 40) never heard of him.

I was highly pissed when the Lakers traded Norm Nixon to the sorry, always-coming-in-last-place San Diego Clippers. Nixon was traded in October (his birthday month) of 1983. How he averaged 11 assists on a Clippers team that only really had Terry Cummings in his prime is one od the great accomplishments in NBA history.

Way before cell phones and Google existed. Nixon had a tight dribble, on a string, no palming like all of today’s players. His change of pace and crossover were killers. And to hear the “Three Musketeers” again, your video made my day! Please make more to highlight players who have been forgotten. “Sweet Lou” Hudson - I even forgot he was once a Laker. And Adrian Dantley was a young buck, had a great college career, had more of an outside game then compared w his Jazz days of backing you down w his big behind.

Fastest PG the Lakers ever drafted. Only knock on him was that he enjoyed the nightlife a little too much during his prime, lol. Still was able to help the Lakers cash in two titles back then. I can understand why he had to be traded, but they should've waited until after the 1983-84 season to do it. His absence was SORELY felt in that championship series against the Celtics, who were able to squeeze past them in 7 games due to cranking up the psychological warfare on the younger backcourt of Magic and Scott. He along with Bob McAdoo are the ones on my short list of Laker greats who should have their numbers retired at Staples at some point down the road, they were really THAT DAMN GOOD! >;-)

As a longtime Celtics fan, I definitely agree about 83-84. Tragic, I mean Magic, 😘had a rough series. That is what Magic and West got since they both wanted Norm gone. Hell, no one was beating Philly in 82-83. I think it was during this season wherein Magic got hurt for a time and Norm ran the show. I remember Magic commenting that when he got back no one was listening to him and he was the point. I believe he ran to the front office and stated there wasn’t room for two PGs. That is all old cantankerous Jerry needed to hear to get rid of Norm who he never liked. I always thought Norm made the Lakers invincible because you essentially had two PGs on the floor at the same time. The two could have cohabitated both Magic and Norm. I never was a Scott fan.
@Sstraw102 жыл бұрын
@@ronsworld250 what makes u believe he did that? Because someone wrote it in a book. Because @ that point he knew if he did something like that he would be the one that got traded. So that don’t make sense, unless he had a “trade wish”.
@ronsworld2502 жыл бұрын
@@Sstraw10 I am not sure who you are referring to when you are commenting on 'he.' If by 'he' you mean Magic, yes there is a video out on YT where Magic actually stated this back in 82ish, 83 about the team not listening to him and that not going to work since he was the PG. Magic stated that they couldn't listen to two voices. Magic was drafted #1 and loved by Buss, RIP, and West, so he knew he wasn't going to be traded. It was no secret that West did not like Norm. I had no idea the bitterness by West towards Norm went that deep as explained in Stray's solid video. I will always contend that the Lakers beat the Celts in 85 because Cornbread's injury was a major factor and he being out of shape hurt the team that year. Red and the rest of the team was P'od big time w/Cedric. That damn 2-3-2 format change screwed the Celts out of a 3-peat, too. They should have been champs in 84, 85, and 86. Now, 87 they had no business beating Motown in the Eastern Conf finals. The team was old and Walton and McHale's injuries doomed the team. Another factor that really killed the Celts was the untimely death of Len Bias. Working Len into the mix w/his athleticism and ever evolving game would have taken a huge load off of the aging vets.

Norm Nixon was one of my favorite Lakers. I did not know about the dislike and mistreatment that Jerry West had directed at Nixon. That's a real shame. Byron Scott was not given any love from me until several years after he became a Laker. This was out of loyalty to Nixon. I never understood why the Lakers traded him away. Byron Scott became such a key part of those championship teams that I finally grew very fond of him. This video reminded me of another great guard whose career was cut even shorter by a knee injury, and who was a Laker briefly as a player then a long career as a scout for the team. I'd love to see a great video of the career of Ronnie Lester, who played his best games as an Iowa Hawk, leading the Hawks to the Final Four, and an injury to his already bum knee took the air out of Iowa's chances for a National Championship. Despite the injury Lester was chosen with the 10th pick in the 1980 NBA draft. His final season as a player was with the LA Lakers on that 1985 Championship team. Then he became a front office employee as a scout and eventually he was the assistant GM. Ronnie Lester was the only Laker executive to see Kobe Bryant play live as a high school player and he urged Jerry West to check out Kobe. His playing career was inspiring and seemingly forgotten. I'd love to see a video focusing on Ronnie Lester.

The Nixon-Magic backcourt was really problematic for opposing defenses because of the unique skill sets of the two. If Nixon was bringing the ball up, he had the quickness to get around virtually any defender and either take it to the basket himself or lay it off to a teammate. Magic, by contrast, was one of the few guards who could take the ball right to the basket, and if he did happen to miss, with his size he could easily tap it back in. I think it's also a reflection of the professionalism of both men that they were able to make the on-court dynamic work even if there were some clashes of egos off the court. That's the true definition of teamwork. You don't have to necessarily get along personally, but when you're on the court you put that aside and make sure the ball's going to the right people in the right places.

Although Norm was part of that killer L.A. team intro, he didn’t really “star” in “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.” It was more like a brief cameo at the very end (along with Kareem, Connie Hawkins and Lou Hudson). Debbie Allen actually had more of a memorable role as the hilariously sassy groupie, in my opinion. I wonder if that’s where her & Norm first met.

He’s being remembered now in the HBO Series Winning Time. However what it doesn’t acknowledge is of how he stole his nickname.😄 It was from Midland, Pennsylvania’s Original “Stormin Norman” Van Lier of the Cincinnati Royals and Chicago Bulls. It was when Nixon played his College ball back then in Pittsburg. Young people today don’t realize that Stromin Norm Van Lier Lead the NBA in Assist in 1970-71 Over Oscar Robertson(while playing with him) and Jerry West. Sadly he still doesn’t have his #2 Retired by the Bulls. Why?🙄
@taharqa3322 жыл бұрын
Because Van Lier had ONE bright season and is a forgettable character. That’s why his number isn’t retired and nobody remembers him.
@godfatherx83342 жыл бұрын
@@taharqa332 People whom don’t know💩about someone or something shouldn’t leave comments. VanLier was a 3x NBA All-Star and All-NBA. 8x NBA All-Defensive Team. So STFU kid! You still have Similac on your breath.🤣

Godfather X - you know your NBA history! I’m a former Laker fan (Dubs fan for the past 20 years) and remember those Bulls teams w van Lier, Jerry Sloan, Chet “The Jet” Walker, Bob “Butterbean” Love, and Tom Boerwinkle. That backcourt was rough!, I know West and Goodrich didn’t relish playing those physical dudes who would hound them and take charges too. Props to you for rekindling fond memories of my favorite Association.
@godfatherx83342 жыл бұрын
@@bballerforever Thanks. I lived that history. Back in the day when the Bulls were in the Western Conference. VanLier once said that guarding Gail Goodrich was the hardest player for him to guard in the league. Goodrich would take him through so many picks, that he never had the strength to even go out for dinner after their games.😂 It’s a way different game today.

The Spurs played the Lakers I saw Norm Nixon practicing in the Hemisfair Arena as a kid. I almost got his autograph. He told me in a professional way that he couldn't give me an autograph. He was preparing for the game against the Spurs.

Nixon's FG% was .483. That is HUGE for a guard. In his second season with the Lakers, he averaged .542. That is in another world. Norm Nixon won't go to Springfield, but he was a terrific player who never got his due.
@mikekelly6072 жыл бұрын
I remember the days when "Stormin Norman" was blasting up and down the court for those Laker teams. He was one of our favorite players. His court speed was really impressive. Upon hearing the news that Nixon had been traded, Jack Nicholson himself was quoted as saying: "I'm wearing black." We all did, Jack. Except for Jerry West apparently.

After watching Winning Time this added some good perspective since the show, while entertaining, takes liberties with the story.

I always wondered why him and Debbie divorced decades later. I also wonder is either him or Magic Johnson going to write a book on the showtime Lakers escapades through LA and all of those so-called parties. Someone once told me that Quincy McCall‘s father in the movie love and basketball was loosely based on Norm Nixon. This video has now inspired me to go watch the movie “the fish that saved Pittsburgh”.

Mannn, I hated the news of his trade. There were times he was unguardable on the floor. Him, Magic, and Kareem made the Lakers the best passing team in the league. They were a joy to watch.

Norm Nixon , Jamal Wilkes and Adrian Dantley were my favorite Lakers in the mid 70s. I was upset when Norm Nixon was dealt away. His game wasn't all that different than Byron Scotts.
@sebclot94782 жыл бұрын
Sure it was. Scott was a pure shooting guard while Nixon had elite point guard skills. Nixon was the far better player overall. Riley always wanted a Rolando Blackman type shooting guard. I think they saw that in Byron, but he never quite lived up to their hopes.

I wish u would have included Bill Russell continually giving props to Nixon. B4 the start of Gm1 NBA finals. Bill Russell said, “ I think the key to the series for the Lakers is Norm Nixon!” … also during the season opener vs. Rockets, Bill said, “ I think he is the most underrated player in the league. To be able to go from point guard to shooting guard, to be able to turn it on & turn it off can be a very difficult thing to do; and he does it very well..!”
