Flapjack was most definitely an acquired taste, one that not everyone had. And generally the opinions on it are mixed. However, it did inadvertently save Cartoon Network from itself some years later by helping to further the careers of two creators who many may know: J.G. Quintel and Pendleton Ward, the former creating Regular Show and the latter creating Adveture Time, on which another creator, Rebecca Sugar, would work and eventually create her own series, Steven Universe which would help Cartoon Network crawl further away from its near complete meltdown after the disastrous live action era.

That Modest Mouse conection is very interesting, because one of the recurring themes of Isaac Brook´s music is actually the sea. By the time that Flapjack hit Cartoon Network, Modest Mouse already put out the album "We Were Dead Even Before the Ship Even Sank". So it really made sense that Isaac would be fan of the show. Also dont you love the artstyle of Flapjack inspired by pirates, tattoos and old sea art? I swear that no other show looks like that.

As an avid fan of Modest Mouse, I had no idea about the connection between the two until recently. I had forgotten about this show until I found it on Hulu and binge watched it. Every time I'd put it on, I couldn't help but be reminded of Modest Mouse just by the general aesthetic and storyline. When I got to "All Hands on Deck" and heard the intro, my brain just about exploded. After looking into it I also learned that the theme song is inspired by "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which was in O Brother Where Art Thou. It's all connected, man!

I caught this show when the first episode aired and I was hooked from the start. Between the odd setting, the esoteric humor and the animation style it was the best CN show of the era. To think it was axed to make way for the worst era in CN history is truly sad. The show had yet to run its course when they canceled it. Modest Mouse has been my favorite band for years so when Isaac Brock covered the theme song I was ecstatic; I immediately recognized his voice. I still get the main theme song and that cover stuck in my head occasionally.

I kept watching the show, mostly because I was hoping to see a multipart episode where they finally find the Candy Island. Imagine my disappointment. My favorite episode would have to be the episode where Flapjack and K'Nuckles hunt for candy wrappers, since Peppermint Larry believes the wrappers to create a map to Candy Island. While this ultimately wasn't so, the idea of the map being cut down to candy wrappers is to this day one of the best treasure hunt ideas I have ever heard.

A marvelous video for a marvelous show! If only it came back but maybe it's better off being a gem to be discovered throughout the ages of time. I love how in one of the TV teasers, you can hear Will Arnett, the voice of Bojack! And I absolutely adore knowing Van Orman helped with Adventure Time, Grim Adventures, etc. But nothing compares to Flapjack, that is why it will always be my favorite show. (:

That 1st commerical break thing with the Flapjack figure brought back so many memories, I forgot about those things being all over the cartoon network in-between segments

Was pretty creeped watching this show as a kid . Until this day I can’t forget the drinking sea water episode and the mechanical genie episode.

this channel is sent from the gods. I used to watch a lot of cartoon network when I was little but never remembered the names of the shows, you're basically laying out all of my favorite childhood shows that I thought I'd lost forever. thank you so much

I remember being really intrigued by the animation and thinking overall it was a great concept, but it was WEIRD.

Chowder and Flapjack were like the perfect duo cartoon to me as a kid. The two golden children that kinda defined that era of CN for me. So different but they were both just so good. Kinda like how I lump Regular Show and Adventure Time together.

This was such an awesome cartoon. One if my favorites actually, just below Chowder, though nit by much. I ?loved* the crazy art style, tone, and especially the random yet perfectly placed bits of unsettling visuals 😆 It was just as 100% unique as its creator.

I just remembered the show. It's the only kids show, where an alcoholic hangs around a child, and gets them to go on adventures for "candy"

back again after a rewatch of my own and MAN there were so many recurring themes and undertones that's depth were completely lost on me as a kid that make more sense or hit a lot harder now over a decade later -- especially Cap'n K'nuckles blatant struggles with alcoh-- er, sugar-ism and his turbulent relationships with Bubbie and Peppermint Larry/Candy Wife in particular. absolutely incredibly show and the rewatch was more than worth my time thank you for the push to do so! (albeit nearly 6 months later lol)

I honestly loved this show, it was one of the only ones I liked and watched while it aired. I was strangely picky as a child, much hasn't changed in my adult life, I suppose, but I give a lot more cartoons a second chance. Regardless if the show puts me off at first.

I remember.... Flapjack being one of the first cartoons I would actively avoid watching due to disgust of it's grotesque art style, including the mentioned Lazlow, Chowder, and Gumball. Looking back, it's even stranger than I remember. I can vaguely see the hints of Grim Adventures and Adventure Time, but the style of Flapjack... just leans too heavily into body dysmorphia and other elements that made it visually unappealing and outright repulsive when they did the hyperrealism moments.

Every zoom-in to see the details of any character was what made this cartoon for me. There were a lot of dark concepts in Flapjack. One of my favorites.

I used to love those seconds where they would stop a scene to give you a gritty and disgusting close up of character's skin or weird looking body parts, my mom got me into horror since I was very young, "The Thing" being one of my favorite horror movies made me love flapjack for its "body horror" I don't know many people who even remember this show but at least in my case it lives rent free in my head, I always remember it fondly and I think it was one of my favorite shows as a kid.

This was definitely a bizarre one for me. And its pretty much because of the things you said; the dull color pallete, the bizarre visuals...but also the one note candy obsession, and often creepy characters. But it was also clearly trying to be bizarre and off beat, so it succeeded at that
