the current state of horror games

sharing some recent thoughts and findings regarding the current state of horror games. on the one hand, there are more games being released than any one person can actually keep up with, which will include many great games! but on the other hand, low effort and low quality games are being shoved onto marketplaces, creating a big pile of oversaturated trash.

I'll say it again, fnaf and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. jokes aside, there's almost been a 'democratization' of game development over the last few years, and it will continue as AI gets more advanced. stuff is way more accessible than it used to be. if you are capable of throwing together some sketchfab assets into a semi-coherent game demo, good for you! that doesn't mean that you should be charging people to play your slop though. the same concept can be applied to pretty much all online content honestly.

Always love these kinds of videos for the insight being given and heavily agree. I personally don’t play many horror games but have seen very much the same repetitive similarities from horror games you stated when watching others play. It seems the purpose of a horror game nowadays is to simply set a mood of panic or eeriness to the player but doesn’t establish a well-written story nor different remarkable aspects that set a horror game apart from the others. Not to mention some are terribly short and low effort repackaged indie games that are sold for the price of an original game of another genre not being horror and are 10x better.

Are there exceptions to that, in your opinion? Perhaps in the likes of SOMA or Resident Evil 7 and 8?

not sure if this was directed to me or @eliee. but there are tons of exceptions as far as i'm concerned - have played lots of good horror games in the past few years, both short games and full length ones, most recently "crow country" has a place in my heart! soma was very good, but haven't actually played resident evil since 5 back in the day!

I feel like many of your points can apply to many new games I feel like the gaming industry and the big companies are just giving up on making good games and just pump games out that are mostly low quality I'm not saying this applies to every company and game in the industry it's all now just grabbing easy cash and not making good and well polished games (great video btw!)
