When people dislike the 3.33 movie, they tend to focus on the fact that nothing in the narrative is explained. But overall, that is inconsequential. The Rebuild movies are still following the same pattern of the original anime. By the end of the 3.33 movie, the final angel is defeated. We have figuratively reached episode 24 of the Evangelion anime. What is expected to come is the final conclusion of the franchise. Each of the name and numbers for the Rebuild movies represents its theme. Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (not) Alone is about how Evangelion is still there, unchanged. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (not) Advance is about how you cannot advance if you embrace escapism. Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (not) Redo is about how wasting your time in escapist limbo is wasted time that you cannot regain and that you cannot go back in the past to fix your mistakes. A personal theory of mine is that 1.0 is how Eva is, 2.0 is how the fans see Eva, and 3.0 is how Anno sees Eva. So 3.0+1.0 will be how Anno sees Eva and how it truly is. And it will likely act as a final resolution to the entire Evangelion franchise. -- Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays! Escapism is not the problem, because of a heavy and slow fish with bones instead of cartilage that escaped from the sea to the land (a new world) because its competitors made of cartilage had it subjected/bullyed is that exist all the land animals of today including us, thanks to that coward we are all today here returning to the ocean more brave than ever before killing sharks with a harpoon. Life takes too many turns. The otakus will definitely escape (to a new world, virtual world on cyberspace) when engineers (more nerds/otakus with a degree) create their waifus robots and just there the third impact will occur. it is already happening, Japan does not manage to increase its population, but the world never ends, it only transforms into something else almost always for better.

this made me realize that what I’ve been doing these past few years is exactly what Anno had been trying to prevent. I’ve been seeking escapism and self-indulgency for a long time, making video games and series the main parts of my life, and if there was a slight moment where I didn’t have those things, I would instantly become panicky and depressed, completely forgetting what it felt like to live. In eva, I’ve been too focused on the lore rather than the message the show had to give, the thought of trying something new or growing up and interacting would always make me nervous, so I preferred to not think about it at all and focus on distracting myself from my reality. This video made me realize how much I’ve fallen into escapism, and how I’ve been selfish by being idle and expecting love and affection from people, without loving myself first, or doing anything to change it. I’ve had a mindset where I only did certain things if people would see It and make me feel like I accomplished something. I felt like when I achieved something it had to be witnessed by other people to be praised, and finally feeling a sense of importance, making me base my whole self-worth on how others treat me.

Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since. Evangelion is nothing but a bright shining lie. There is no instant cure for depression as so many on KZbin and Reddit claimed and praised this series to be. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the Coronavirus pandemic which robbed me of my life. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate this series which people treat larger than life, because of how much pain it resurfaces. Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day. Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore. But it only spiraled me deeper into depression. I just want Shinji, this past version of me to be happy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters, even if it kills me.

It reminds me of Inside Out where the characters go to a part in the brain that simplifies the characters into abstract shapes, you “know” who they are but they take on a different form. Kinda like Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Patriots and the later narrative that breaks the 4th wall. It’s not supposed to make sense and talk directly to you but it does and while that’s scary, you try to see if the story, in-universe, and continue.

I basically never comment on KZbin, but let me say this this: Amazing analysis. I don't really even know what else to say. I recently watched the 26 episode anime and EoE movie for the first time just a few weeks ago, and it quickly became my favorite piece of fiction I have ever consumed. I always interpreted the show as essentially a metaphor for the loneliness caused by depression, and how it manifests itself: * Shinji is depressed because he has been abandoned and gone unloved by his own family. * Asuka is depressed because she has also lost her own family. * Rei is depressed because she HAS no family, and is essentially used as a tool by her surrogate father (Gendo) to further his own project. The part I find interesting is how all 3 main characters personify their depressions differently, and how I see those same traits expressed in both myself and real people that I know personally: * SHINJI is desperate for validation, and seeks it out above all else. His insecurity is his defining character trait. *ASUKA is the opposite, repressing her depression deep down inside, and covering it up with a hard work ethic and constant efforts to prove herself and be 'the best'. * And then there is REI - the most tragic character in the anime. Rei is an empty shell. She is a tool used by the EVA Project, and nothing else. She is infinitely replaceable. She understands her life and physical body are meaningless, and has resigned herself to that. Her life is an empty void, and she does not even see value in her self, because there is none. I have personally known many people that cope with the loneliness and meaninglessness of life in all 3 of those ways: INSECURITY (Shniji), REPRESSION (Asuka), and APATHY (Rei). In my own struggles with depression, I have known all 3 forms, but most identify with apathy - Rei's defining trait. When I think of all the people I have known who I have known or suspected to be depressed, they ALL express at least ONE of those 3 traits, many posses multiple traits, and some express all 3 at once. I believe that this metaphor was a central theme of the show. I have not watched the rebuild movies, and after watching your analysis, I will probably skip them. I definitely greatly appreciate the insight to their themes and how the author (Anno) has probably used them to subvert and comment on the audiences expectations on what the piece is supposed to mean, but I think I hold the original show so dearly to my heart, that I can't let the Rebuilds thru my AT Field. P.S. I personally believe (and the particular translation of the show that I watched almost explicitly stated), that the 'AT-Field' AKA Absolute Terror Field is a metaphor for the emotional barriers that people put up around themselves to protect themselves from rejection but in doing so, prevent themselves from reaching any meaningful level of intimacy with another person. Anyways, thank you Mr. " . " for the in depth analysis. It really got me to think about the show more deeply and motivated me to share the thoughts above. Amazing video.

@@normaaliihminen722 My take is that it is not about commercializing Asuka/Rei that the creator has a problem with. You are free to buy a figurine of a mecha if you like it. You are allowed to buy them if you have a strong emotional connection with the series. Rather, it is the fact that the audience still have not learned to consume anime and media critically. Their understanding of NGE is still superficial as they focused on how Asuka or Rei embodies their version of a perfect woman that they want; when the creator wants them to examine NGE to understand its lesson about human connection, and eventually learn to do it in real life. However, these misunderstanding spreads and became a pillar for Otaku culture. Otaku culture around "waifu" is still extremely popular, with unrealistic archetypes of both male and female protag for audience to surrogate into. Even recently, the popular "isekai" genre is the form of ultimate escapism: you are reborn into a primitive world with your modern knowledge, so now you are able to dominate other people, charm the women, rule like a king in another world. All of these are the wrong lessons to learn from NGE success; at least it is what I think.

Hideaki Anno: "I will make Evangelion into a massive franchise with shaving products, a real world EVA train, a 4D movie with Godzilla, a cinematic universe, an amusement park, and far more" Fans: buy product Anno: "They're indulging in Eva escapism that I make money off of? They missed the point, terrible." The Rebuilds I think tried to repeat the anti-escapist message of the original series that was more fitting back then, because Eva was not the juggernaut it is today. It was influential immediately, sure, but it didn't have 14 years of merchandising at its start. It's a very hard sell to tell fans that Shinji is being symbolically punished for indulging in his embrace of essentially being an otaku, when the creator himself has facilitated this. The message ends up feeling layed on a bit thick, and sometimes just completely opposite. Shinji was punished for his conscious choice to escape from the world and avoid human connection in the OG series. This is in concert with the events. He fails to connect to Asuka, Misato, Rei, Gendo, and everyone who could have helped him before he initiated the Impact. The impact was the climax of his despair, as all of the damage he contributed to (it wasn't *wholly* his fault, since he was only a pawn in a larger plan, which I appreciate being respected in EoE) came to a crest there. In 3.33, it seems like Shinji's punishment is bound by rules that are inconsistent. His actions at the end of 2.22 are difficult to see as escapist entirely; it clashes. Rei being a representation of overt waifu culture would be a great plot beat in isolation, but Shinji also thinks his Eva just killed/maimed Asuka and is watching who he perceives to be his last very *real* friend die in front of his eyes. Is the consequence of such an action being Third Impact really all that fitting? And it's not like his gloom afterwards is inappropriate either - he tries to talk to and reconnect with important people in his life, only to be met with outright hostility and contempt. He has an explosive collar that will kill him if he pursues the plan to salvation that Kaworu proposes (before they were tricked). That feels like a very good reason to be cautious! And it's not like Kaworu talking to Shinji is entirely altruistic either - Kaworu wants to control the next Impact to restore the world, because it pleases him to please Shinji. Is that outcome not a rejection of reality as well - to ignore the horrible present by inventing a new one? It's a narrative and thematic mess, and I think that these plot points and dynamics inherently mess with the messaging. Ultimately, it makes less sense to chastise the audience for making your franchise so successful when it's on the up and up and making huge stacks of money. You can still reinforce your themes of seeking out true connection and dealing with the hurt locker that is life, without telling the audience their original sin was making a movie like this even possible. I really want to like 3.33 and 3.0+1.0, but I just think there's too many flaws in characterization as they currently stand.

This video gave me a new perspective as I watched thrice opon a time. Thrice upon a time was a goodbye to the fans. Shinji represents the weakness of humanity and the fans. Rei represents the show itself. Mari represents something new. Rei tells Shinji "I wish you would find happiness without the Evas." Shinji decided to reject instrumentality and find happiness without the Evas. And Mari comes to pull Shinji out of his purgatory and they become lovers. Encouraging the fans to let go of the show and embrace a neon genesis. The utada hikaru song "one last kiss" playing at the end further pushes the goodbye. I loved it.

It’s only sexual in a weird way if you are focusing on it like that. Let’s be honest, what is shown is pretty natural/normal. Ultimately the kid is attracted to the opposite sex and wants a connection with them. No big deal. I had my first crush in preschool, I think. And within the story of a naive boy struggling through anxiety, loneliness, and depression, those themes of physical connection and acceptance are very relevant and important. So to dismiss that and just interpret that aspect of the story in a sanctimonious way is really doing a disservice to your potential interpretation of this very unique story’s meaning.

@@RockyLXXXVIII I think he does, hence the Kawuro scene in 3.33. Thats literally escapism, Shinji forgetting the crapsack world around him, but it is also creative, doing something. For me, this whole thing makes far more sense when I just imagine that Anno is literally talking to himself. Anno is an escapist, and he was depressed by it, and he hated himself and what he does because it makes him depressed, and he sees other people just like him, because of his interactions with the Otaku scene. He took his own message to heart, married, and is nowadays much more stable, and accepted himself, and that its OK to create anime, which was the other part of the message that he put into Eva. Love yourself just how you are, accept yourself. Eva was never directed at the population as a whole, it was directed at Otaku, who have nothing but escapism to keep them sustained. So of course, the message was put more bluntly, like you'd tell an alcoholic that alcohol really is bad and the cause of all his trouble, even though everybody knows that you can drink in a way that isn't detrimental to you.

But he ultimately understand that the game is not meant for him, because it is merely a journey towards self realization and consciousness, he ends up with nothing. But if you're talking about season 2 you may be right, he just seems to be so convicted to his plot for really no reason apart from keep being the same person that he's been for so many years, without space for redemption. A redemption was hinted in episode 4 I believe, when he decides to help Lawrence and his wife, but he eventually returns in his path. A failed redemption plotline can work sometimes, but not in William's case, at least as it is portrayed in the series, because he ends up being kind of irrelevant, and not a major obstacle. But he and Ford are not the only good characters, season 1 Dolores works just fine, Bernard/Arnold too. It’s ironic that despite all the talk of escapism being an illusion, the anime is just an illusion of excaggerated human emotion, which in turn, makes this video a form of escapism. We believe we are truly learning and developing from this experience. -nonetheless love the video, best evangelion explanation yet :)-
@whatdoesthisthingdo

The emotions of the anime may not be as exaggerated as you prefer to believe. Consider yourself fortunate if you never experience equally severe emotions throughout your lifetime. More to the point, the anime may help people navigate that, and for those that do, they are learning and developing - the ability to endure emotional suffering is a very valuable skill. To improve such a skill is not a form of escapism. It can be quite literally, and quite often, a matter of survival (as is shown in the show).

People are generally more interested in the lore than the messaging behind it all, as people don't like others telling them how to live their lives. Especially when it comes to fiction. Usually it's why themes should be more for background development and world building as your work could easily become propaganda once it starts lecturing an audience rather than entertaining it.

@@anayos6726 It´s a good point. I´m against the manipulation through art. But I don´t think such a thing is presented in the series. It´s possible to entretain an audience and to lecturing at the same time without being propaganda. Such a form of human expression in art goes as far back as the Greek moralists of the ancient tradition. What you have to think about is that, as long as it is not an imposition, the viewer always has the freedom to decide to ignore the message or not. But first you have to realize that it exists and try to understand it. That is the responsibility that we have as interpreters of an artistic work and it is ours alone. Easily my favorite Evangelion analysis video. Really spot on, and matches the conclusion to the rebuild saga despite being made years before. Doesn't waste time retreading ground like most analysis videos, which feel the need to explain the entire plot of the show without much interesting or non-obvious commentary, and instead explains the relevant interpretations. Certain points and themes were crystalized in ways that I never truly understood with as much clarity as provided by this video. Amazing stuff.

I remember when we premiered the End of Evangelion movie back in 1999 and it was surreal. People just didn't know how to process it. Afterwards many people were literally walking around the convention silently or talking in small groups like someone had died. Its a real shame that we couldn't get Hideaki Anno as a guest, his input on the movies directly would have probably helped some people grasp what he was truly trying to say. Of course for most Otaku, that message is an anathema...

@@hawkeyenextgen7117 I am really sorry to hear about your experience with the anime and everything you have gone through. I had a similar experience since I was not completely mentally healthy when I watched it. I would just like to say that there are different ways to see the ending and you can choose one that has a better outlook. I personally don’t want to watch the movie and I don’t think I will just from hearing and watching about what it basically is and what the ending is and I would say that the best for you right now is to forget about the movie as well. When I finished watching the anime I was left with a sense of hopelessness, confusion and overall numbness, especially since I watched it very late at night and it brought back ugly memories. However, after reflecting on it, it gave me a sense of hope. By ignoring the movie’s ending, I was able to try to piece things together with ONLY the anime’s ending. this allowed me to see what the world can be and what MY world could be. I saw the potential in life by improving my thinking and mindset the same way Shinji did at the end. ignoring the movie let me see this little glimpse of hope. I think, in my opinion, that in this video the theme of escapism is also a little too harsh. I think that there are different ways to achieve happiness and while escapism might sound bad I think that at least acknowledging the problem but then moving on is a way to achieve happiness and I don’t think that’s all that bad. this might be confusing but it’s hard to piece my thoughts together in a youtube comment. i would love to have a fuller conversation about this, but, as this is the most i can do, this will be my little grain of sand. i completely agree with you in a way you will never understand. I don’t see this anime as this miraculous masterpiece that can cure depression and sadness altogether and i related to shinji in a very depressing and humiliating way at times. i felt like throwing my phone at the wall and yelling at nothingness for hours so many times while watching. but in my own mind I made this interpretation of the ending that helps me move forward and live life the best i can. i think that nurturing the tiniest piece of hope is all humanity can do to survive and live on, so i choose to nurture that little glimpse of hope i saw at the end and keep walking, leaving my past and problems behind. call it escapism or whatever you want, but at least im happier now. i hope you are doing better now and hope maybe this provides a different outlook on it. sorry if it doesn’t make any sense or made it worse

You could make the message as heavy handed and blunt as possible, but the people who ignored the message in its original form will likely still ignore it. It's a hurtful message that challenges their livelihoods, that forces the realization that the false happiness they've created is just that; false. Who would want to hear that? So the message is clear. But the receivers have their fingers in their ears.

Throughout the series, Shinji's SD cassette player acts as one of the vessels into his world of escapism, illustrated by numerous moments where he has a dismissive retreating attitude towards the issues around him and hides away playing it, Rei clutching it/trying to save it at the end of 2.0, and in the 3.33 Rebuild film, there is a VERY important line Kaworu says in the shot of him picking the tape player off of the floor in Shinji's room. He looks down at it and says “And playing the same traumatic refrain in your mind over and over again? What good can possibly come of that?" He has been the ONLY voice of reason that genuinely wants to pull Shinji out of the bout of escapism, in an unconditionally loving way. The fact that the last we see of it left in the dirt at the end of 3.0 is very telling to this degree.

I never thought of it this way, but all of this explains why I'm the only one I know who liked to original ending (before the 2 movies). Not convinced I really understood it, I'm 86 so I was pretty young, but it just "resonated" with me. At the same time I was also watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time, I think that affected me way more. What I learned from EVA, I'd say, is to look at cartoons beyond "a show for kids", and I think that worked for many despite everything. So all in all, considering thanks to its misunderstanding EVA made anime way more popular, I can't resent it.

I seen bits and pieces of references to this franchise and it’s interested me since if seen it. I love thought provoking themes. Themes that leave you still thinking about them from time to time after watching. Honestly thank you because I really appreciate the series and what it’s trying to convey, but it does it in such an articulate way that it flies miles above the average viewers head.

Kaworu truly is an idealised version of Shinji, someone that lives firmly in reality and has achieved happiness through the accepting of change. The main issue is that Shinji (being the representation of those who seek escapism) doesn't see Kaworu as an example, but instead something that he can leech off of and look towards for reassurance; rather than putting in the work of finding it within himself, that is why Kaworu is destined to die. He is not something that you can co-exist alongside forever, he's merely the carrier of an idea that you can either adopt into your OWN life, or eventually let die, and stagnate as a result. Kaworu was not dependant on Shinji to be happy, Shinji merely enhanced his life. The same cannot be said for Shinji, he was entirely dependant on Kaworu for his own happiness. This is the one thing Kaworu lamented before he died, that he could not teach Shinji to be as self-sufficient in his happiness as he was. tl;dr Don't Idolize Kaworu as a character, Just follow his example to be a better version of yourself.

What a meta. When I Saw the series being "blind" of it's context and all. I just saw kaworu like a guy who is .. just there, it has a connection with Shinji, but being completely disconnected of the whole thing. I wanted to know the points of others to understand all, not for my lack of conception. But to know how polysemic the interpretations can be. @@qqq386 It doesn't seem reasonable imo to throw in a bunch of symbolism and then step back and get mad when people inevitably get confused or come up with their own interpretation. The message may have been obvious to the author but if the audience isn't getting it then maybe they need a hint.
