I saw it in the theater. Very dark, so see it at night with very little ambient lighting. It kind of has a Robert Eggers vibe, with just the right combo of unease, jump scares and gore. Good stuff.

@@tomsklanka9436 AVP Requiem and Rob Zombie's first Halloween from 2007 are the only movies I've had an issue with this. I still liked elements of Zombie's setup but would have still hated AVP2 even if it had been better lit. I really wanted to see The Cursed, but it has already left my local theater.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It's a period film, so it does take its time to flush out the characters, story and motives of certain characters. I kinda put it up there with "BrotherHood of the Wolf", without the action, but there are graphic scenes of brutality and it's a beautiful film to watch. Great review Mr.H!

I loved this movie and I didn't even know it was gonna be about a werewolf going in and when I found out in the movie thats what they were dealing , I was so hyped. My only issue is I hate that everytime the wolf attacked, they kept using this shaky filter I guess showing the POV of the wolf or idk but it was really distracting and I feel like they did it to hide the CGI wolf which I get but it got kinda annoying but overall the movie was still really good.

This kind of has "The Witch" vibes. It doesn't look like it, oh just has this...I don't know. Some unquantifiable factor. I used to LOVE werewolf movies and shows. When I was 9 or 10 there was a Werewolf series that I remember thinking had the most badass looking werewolf. It was closer to they look in that more current movies as opposed to the old 50s ones. I haven't seen the show since so it very well may be lame if I saw it now.

Both films have a very stylized quality that paints autumn woods as this dark and primally foreboding place, a place that humans should be afraid to wander too far into. I love films that can successfully pull that atmosphere off, because it reminds me of when I was a kid and played in the woods, worrying sometimes what might be out there.

I remember seeing production clips of this like almost 2 years ago, just as muhCovid was starting, it was called Eight From Silver at the time. Apparently they reworked some of the plot and changed the title and spiced up the effects work. It got picked up for a limited theatrical release, was supposed to be on demand initially. I'd been waiting for this for years lol, can't wait to check it out this weekend! Colonial era village/folk horror with a werewolf, yes please!

So glad you reviewed this Mr. H. Didn't know it existed. I'm a sucker for a good werewolf movie and I think it's long overdue. Love the original howling and American werewolf. Directors these days seem to fail badly with these kinds of movies so it's refreshing to see someone actually do a good job.

This is going off and a bit of a tangent, but it's what I do. For some reason the whole scarecrow thing reminds me of the old "crucifixion" drunk prank we used to pull at the skydive dropzone I worked as a camera flyer for an few years at back in the early 2000's. Much of the staff lives in the campground during the season, and there are various traditions that are unique from dropzone to dropzone when it comes to passing out drunk at the bonfire, the most intricate (but most respected) was the crucification. You'd hold their arms out in a Jesus pose, wrap their wrists around a broomstick or something similar for the cross beam. Then have four people hoist them up against the light pole, basketball net post or something like that, then wrap their entire body and your pole of choice from chest to legs with an entire roll Saran wrap. They'll stay up there until it's cut off.* It's not as a painful thing to wake up to, but just as "what the fuck... WHAT the FUCK?! Someone get me down!!!" And it's laughs for a lifetime. *You do want to make sure not to wrap them too tight; you don't want to compress their chest that would make it difficult to breathe.

Good review Mr H. I hadn't heard of this but I will be checking it out now. I love werewolves they are my favourite kind of monster. I especially like when the human is just as much of a victim of the werewolf as those they attack. Of the top of my head I think the last good werewolf movie I saw was Late Phases which while having good effects and an excellent transformation scene was let down slightly by the creature designs.

So I just finished watching the movie and I thought it was pretty good for the most part but didn't really grab me. The gypsy scene was brutal and the werewolves (what little you saw of them) looked pretty gnarly and the film had a great gothic atmosphere. I think the timeskip at the opening and ending scenes weren't really necessary and I think they didn't add anything to the movie. I didn't find the werewolf attack scenes more brutal than what you usually get in these kind of movies. They were very choppy and the monster is only seen in brief flashes except for at the end. All in all a good atmospheric gothic monster movie but nothing special IMO.

Yeah I was expecting the ending to have him change back into the werewolf again after the silver bullet was removed or something because those scenes didn't really add anything. Plus did they actually resolve the curse in the end? I suppose you could say the mother's sacrifice ended the curse or something. Still really enjoyed it.

Finally! It's so rare to see quality werewolf movies coming around. Mr. H, if you have the chance to see Howl and Werr, they are two low budget pretty impressive British werewolf flicks, you should check them out.

So I just watched this and have to agree it's a brilliant film, it does have some resemblance with The VVitch in regards to you reap what you sow, I think that's how I interpreted it. And it's GORY and brutal. Definitely doesn't hold back. There is some CGI, and Boyd Holbrook is pretty strong lead in this. He is a great actor imo when given the opportunity and the right role. Will watch again.

I just saw this because of Mr H's tip and it's good! Gorgeous cinematography, a couple of good scares, great biblical quote, good cast. The beast had some nice touches: it seemed to be extremely intelligent (e.g. it avoided the humans when it saw the rifle) and the 'sad' howling made it even more disturbing.

4 questions, Why the hell are they using musket rifles in 1882? Why would they think to make silver bullets when the monsters can be killed any ordinary way? Why are the silver Musket rounds in the shape of a bullet and not a ball? What was the point or value of the whole WW1 trench intro? Also hairless werewolves. It was just ok

Finally saw it, the cinematography and setting trick you into thinking its better and more high brow than it is and is a part of this new wave of ‘elevated horror’ films (thats such a dreadful term but when i use it you know what im referring to) and it belongs alongside the likes of hereditary, midsommar, the witch, get out, the lighthouse etc but this is far from the case. Dreadful editing and some poor directing, lots of unnecessary shots and cutaways that could have been taken out that slow the pace down and kill the suspense (especially the part were the owner of the house goes to check on the maid near the end of the film). The 35 years earlier / later plot point adds nothing whatsoever to the film and easily could have been taken out and it doesn’t effect the story in the slightest. Im all for slow burn films and shows (Midnight Mass is one of the best tv series ive seen recently) but there was a lot of filler in this. The soundtrack was lacking and could have added so much more. Ok, serviceable acting, the weakest being the mother of the main family we follow. The good points are the special and practical fx for the budget its operating on but thats it, hated the weird screen shaky filter they use during some of the werewolf attack scenes. This had some potential and im disappointed with the final product as i was looking forward to seeing this once i heard about it and it’s premise 4.5/10

I just saw the movie I got it at Walmart for like 10$ I don’t know it was from 2022 and that it was werewolves I thought it was from around 2015 and I thought it was just a creepy monster I didn’t get werewolf vibes I did like the movie
