It amazes me that there are people who don't think Malala deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Just... listen to her, listen to what she's saying. This is a sixteen-year-old girl who has already survived an assassination attempt -- and instead of keeping a low profile out of fear of another attempt on her life, she is STILL using her voice to advocate for girls' and women's education and to fight the oppressive forces that tried to silence her. What's more, she's not advocating an iron-fist approach. She still wants to treat her oppressors like people. Please tell me who deserves it more than she does.

Colby Gleason Well, for one, she's an inspiration to people worldwide -- specifically, to women and girls, whose education she is fighting for. More concretely, though, she and her father co-founded the Malala Fund, which is "focused on helping girls go to school and raise their voices for the right to education," according to the Twitter. I'm not sure whether her book's proceeds went to that fund, but apparently that is/was a possibility. Throwing money at causes doesn't solve the problems, necessarily, but she's earning the prizes and recognition she is for a reason.

ramywiles I'm 16 myself (I live in India) and you have a point, I'm inspired by her. It makes me want to get up and go to school everyday so that I can help humanity have a significantly brighter future than what we're envisioning right now (i.e., WW3 - or an event that might trigger WW3). She's absolutely right, education plays such an important role. But ignorance seems to be a thriving attitude among a lot of people these days, especially privileged people (an observation). I feel like if everyone just opened their minds instead of being blindsided by societal norms and conformed and traditional beliefs, our progression and evolution as a species would be easier. Malala is doing what she can, and she's a brave young girl that a lot of Middle Eastern students will look up to as inspiration. She'll be their motivation. A baby step is still a step. :) To borrow the words of a friend, "Systematic discrimination and power abuse is the most powerful form of hate. When the system is against you, there is very little you can do to fight back without being immediately crushed."

Saudi, Iran, and Afghanistan don't have exclusive rights to Arabic, Farsi and Pashto names. Also, as far as you know her family could have been Pashto, migrations and cultural intermingling were a common phenomenon and continue to be to this day. My family originates from Syria and Saudi Arabia, but I still consider myself an Indian National. Lora, I have read her book and seen both the movie (He named me Malala) and the documentary (Class Dismissed.) She comes from an educated family who supports her in her activism. Her Father owned and ran a school that he started 3 years before Malala was even born. Malala began reading at age 5. And her mother, as a child, briefly attended school, but became discouraged as she was the only girl in a classroom full of boys, and she wanted to be with all her girl friends. Love of education, and truth, permeates the entire family. Malala was the top student in her class in Pakistan, and won many trophies and awards, even as a young child.

I finished her book yesterday evening, and I have never read a more inspiring book, to think that she spoke out since she was 10 and fought all of this struggle, being shot, going into coma and undergoing several surgical procedures. It taught me that if there is wrong being done to u, u mustn't hesitate to speak out and defend yourself, don't take anything for granted and never underestimate your potential to change the world. It's sad how kids in the west complain for HAVING to go to school while kids in the east fight and die for a right to go to school. This girl is, and should be, an inspiration to all, not just teenagers. I hope that in the near future I get to see more examples like her and hope that one day humanity will restore my faith in people all together. She, in my opinion, deserves the "Nobel's Peace Prize" because she is one of the few people I have come upon in the recent years who can't be considered to have one ulterior motive. Jesus is seen only as a prophet which, if one reads the Gospels, it is quite troubling because He obviously seems to be claiming much more than that. John, if you do a study of the differing branches of Christianity at the time of Muhammad being around the 7th century, I cannot exactly recall which heresy of the time it might have been, but some of the Christians that Muhammad knew might have actually held the belief that Jesus was not divine or seen as being the Son of God. I have read this somewhere but cannot recall where. It is this erroneous view of Christ that carried over into the belief of Islam and so they state that God having a Son would mean that somehow God was lowered to the level of the human family. Maybe it was the Nestorian heresy, but I am not sure. I have heard of some Muslims however, and they are very few, that have a kind of 'agnostic' view of Jesus being the Son of God, meaning, they might 'hope' that what we believe could be true.

John as a Catholic Christian I am taught that it is not for me to judge the writings of any other religion as being holy or not holy at face value. One MUST take into account the era of history in which sacred writings were written as well as the differences in cultural and literary expressions. Even good Jewish and Muslim scholars believe that. Sadly, anyone can impose their own meanings upon ancient texts and misuse them in such a way as to support even a radically political or militarized ideology. I have listened to audio books of the Holy Qur'an (and I say this out of respect, i.e., the Golden Rule) and I have a copy from an Egyptian translator. Now, I am no T.S. Elliot (Lawrence of Arabia), but I read in English some very beautiful prayers in the Qur'an and I choose to respect how they pray. Saint Francis did too when he met with the Sultan Salahadin. I also choose to believe that even if people could be so mistaken in this life about Jesus, His Divine Mercy endures forever, and where humanity cannot find God's Way, God's Way has His own Way of finding humanity.

Well done Mr Stewart for brining this child to your show and showing the general public what is happening to poor people. I live in UK and went there for my honeymoon and know how humbled I was by the people for their kindness and hospitality.One day we stopped to see a family tending to their vegetables in the filed near the road and we decided that we will buy fresh vegetables from them. I asked them if we could pick and buy them, they said yes pick them, after I said how much? They turned around to me and said I can have them ! I couldn't do that I said its your living and I can afford them. After much insisting , our driver came over and said they will feel insulted , maybe you should just give something to the kids that were playing near by. So I did , the farmer was happy and I was happy. One evening I went for a walk near the hotel I was sating at and a local man greeted me and I returned the greeting and we started talking about how beautiful the surroundings were, as I bid him goodbye , he turned around and invited us to his home for an evening meal.I was just flabbergasted and humbled again that a complete stranger was asking us to to his home. I will never forget my experiences of Swat valley and its people. They may not have much in a materialtic way but their hearts are so true and loving. I hope that the piece loving people will get piece soon, as I would love to back there again one day.

*EDIT:* a lot of people have been misreading my original comment. I am not bashing on Malala, nor am I denying the bad in Pakistan. Much of Pakistan's infrastructure has been damaged because of extremism, corruption and poverty. And yes, I realize that I am privileged because I received an education and lived a good life, and I'm not ignoring the people who are not able to do so. If I say that Pakistan has good that is widely ignored, that does NOT mean I am turning my back on the bad. What people fail to understand is that that's not all there is to Pakistan. Malala is a brilliant woman; she has done a lot for the education of Pakistan, and I am grateful. But it disturbs me how the Western MEDIA has picked up her story and is circulating it over and over again, while failing to mention everything good in Pakistan. Has anyone heard of the world's largest welfare organizer? Abdul Sattar Edhi. He's a Pakistani. How come he's never gotten any attention? So before you go on a rant about how I should be "ashamed" of myself for my "stupid" comment, maybe you should step back and read my comment from an objective point of view. - Malala is an inspirational young woman. She is extraordinarily brave, and she has stood up for what she believes in in a way that I never could. Looking at her makes me feel kind of worthless. I respect her and I admire her and I am inspired by her. BUT. The attention she's getting from the Western media and Western organizations is slightly problematic. I recently moved to the United States from Pakistan, and because of her story, there's a very negative view of Pakistan as a whole going around in the US. Whenever I tell someone I'm from Pakistan, I get one of two reactions: 1) "Oh, where that girl Malala was shot?" or 2) "Oh, how do you know English if girls there are shot for going to school?" Hmm. I don't blame these people at all, because that's the image the media projects of Pakistan. Let's see. Malala was shot in Swat, a rural area in Pakistan where poverty is rampant and poverty is a breeding ground for terrorism. But in bigger Pakistani cities, an increasing amount of girls are getting an education. The view people have of Pakistan is that girls don't get an education at all. That's not true. Look it up. There isn't such a huge gap between the male literacy rate and the female literacy rate. I am literate. My mother was literate. My grandmother was literate. My cousins are literate. My cousins' children are getting an education. ALL of the women in my high school have gone on to pursue higher education (whether in Pakistan or abroad). Another thing. The official language of Pakistan is English. Not the national language, but the official language. Most schools teach English, and some major schools have begun to teach English as a first language. So Malala, even though I think you're a brave woman, I think your story does more damage to Pakistan than it does good. :( And how about the 132 children killed in APS in December for being the children of soldiers fighting against the Taliban in North Waziristan? Don't they deserve recognition? Or does the fact that they were CHILDREN OF SOLDIERS FIGHTING THE TALIBAN not support Western propaganda of demonizing Pakistan as a whole?

What I believe is that we should not recognize a minority as a whole for a country, especially if we are dealing with terrorism and religion. Yet, we should give them the attention they deserve, in the case of uneducated women. Before I began teaching myself about other countries and their influence, I knew little to nothing. Unfortunately, the media decides to emphasize the terrible parts of human nature more than it does with the good parts. We tend to shut ourselves out as a country. As I began learning about other cultures, I realized that in the United States, we do not receive a full image of the many incidents that occur all over the place. It is truly disgusting when people label Islam as a terrorist religion. However, I do think Malala's cause is justified. Though there are many parts of Pakistan that educated, there are some that aren't. Those minorities should be heard and her message is needed for those who are blinded by hate. For your situation, I am truly sorry. I wish people didn't do things like this, or regard a person differently according to their place of birth. Sure, Malala's message may have been misinterpreted by those who only focus in the negative. She is advocating for equality, but human nature is making us focus on the hate that is being misread. I wish we wouldn't do such things, but is blatantly obvious that it is hard to spread love and peace. I hope those who died get the recognition they deserve. Malala could have died just as easily, but she was given another chance and she is taking it.

Her cause is nothing but inspiring, and she's a wonderful human being, and I will always defend her in front of people who criticize her cause; there is nothing to criticize. When the attack happened in December, killing 132 children, a lot of people criticizing Malala realized that those 132 children were all Malalas in a way, but the difference is, they were killed and couldn't raise their voice. But the fact remains that people are ignorant, and a lot of people will never do what you have done. They will never actively try to gain knowledge of other cultures and countries; instead, they will judge based on what they see in the media. And unfortunately, the media only associates Pakistan with terrorism and Malala, rather than a vibrant community who is diverse and vastly tolerant, an army that is laying down their lives in North Waziristan to fight a war on terror and a country that despite facing blow upon blow is still persevering. Again, I don't blame PEOPLE for this, but I blame the media. I wish it wasn't that one-sided.
