You know, looking at the 'slow' part of Eloise, in the middle of the song,.. its such a shame that Dave Vanian was around maybe too soon..his looks are film star quality here, his charisma is off the charts, and his voice is smooth. In this present time,..if Dave had been the age now that he was then,.. he could have been a massive star, not only a singer , but probably acting too. I always feel this man should have been offered much greater things in terms of work, and fame and status.

You are SO correct! It's their 40th concerts and they are finally getting the recognition they - especially Dave deserves, but at what cost? 90 minute sets. I always thought he was ALL THAT and then some, in every way, at least here, playing this AMAZING festival on the Thames I believe, w/ Eloise with the Philharmonic Orchestra behind him, he just had to feel like King of the World at least at that moment, and so he should have... 40 years later, he's STILL got it, and I got to spend some time with him and his lovely wife Patricia who also deserves more for her musical contribution and for being an amazing human being in the first place! I'll see Dave at least, again soon enough! Very excited, it's been far too long!!

From the nastiest punk band ever, to playing a venue like this backed by a full orchestra, it's obvious that The Damned both ARE punk rock, and also transcended it to an amazing level unequaled in the genre. Now that the 40th Anniversary tour has wrapped up and they're back in the studio recording a new album, it's fair to say that they're garnering the best press of their entire career. Yeah, longevity has it's merits, but it wouldn't count for sh!t if they hadn't delivered the goods every show, every tour, for 40+ years. I've seen them in-concert about two dozen times, including the Fillmore a few months ago, and I was also their lighting director for two shows at the I-Beam in San Francisco in the late 80's. It's about Damned time they're getting their due, being acknowledged as the true legends they are. Hey, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame knuckleheads: get a f*cking clue and induct them already!

I'm 53 but in not to bad condition for those 53 years. We looked at a review of the Newcastle gig on the Monday morning and it said Cpt ended the night with a classic "Happy Talk". He ended our gig with a super "Jet Boy Jet Girl". It is so refreshing seeing, and knowing, that people such as yourself are going through the same trip I went through all those years ago. Paul suffered from Tinnitus and was unable to leave his home for 3 yeaars. It was great seeing him up there and enjoying the crowd. He has been working with other bands but for me, once a Damned member, always a Damned member. Keep rocking mate and enjoy the entire trip ahead of you.

Not only are they not doing "farewell" tours or performances anymore, and which they haven't done in well over 30 years BTW, but their last two studio albums both hit the top 10 on the charts: "Evil Spirits" in 2018 (#7), and "Darkadelic" in 2023 (#9). That was all planned well in advance. They sent one of the crew into the local music shops to get the cheapest guitars they could find. Pity the director opted not to show the trashing antics. @Mr.Swankly10 жыл бұрын
Is this very "progressive rock" ? Long song, lots of changes, the noodling is kept down. It just reminds me of all the reasons Rush is the worst group ever. Who knows what R N Roll is? But I'll take the straight forward Damned over Eloise. Or even " Alone Again Or" shows great virtuosity while not being bloated n proggy. Damned were so great bc they did what they wanted, not what their audience expected. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes a mess of bad ideas, always at it's center a peculiar "Damned" uniqueness one can ONLY get from forever legendary DAMNED.

+Johnny Rotten they sold out with the cover version in the first place...but saying that I would have known about the band love if it was not for the Alone Again Or cover :)
@coalhalo8 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure why you think they "sold out" with this one particular song; The Damned have always done covers,(just look at the Naz Nomad lp), and this particular one demonstrates Dave Vanian tastes in music, and with the departure of Captain Sensible no one to to stand up to him. I've always thought the main problem with the "Anything" record was the label. The Damned finally sign to a major label and the first release with them, Phantasmagoria, was a big success. So the label puts a lot of pressure on the band to come up with a follow up quickly so they can cash in. I think the band needed some down time to come up with better material, I find it vey telling that two of the three singles were covers. And then the label dropped them because "Anything" didn't sell as well as "Phantasmagoria", but not before they released a double record compilation to squeeze as much out of the band as they could. There has always been talk about how the band is cursed and sometimes I wonder.
@blackmore47 жыл бұрын
They didn't "sell out" at all. 'Eloise' has all of the brilliant drama, darkness, silliness, chaos and general over-the-top mayhem which the Damned's own writing and performing has always possessed.
@Monocultured014 жыл бұрын
But doesn't selling out mean you make more than just one song that sounds more mainstream? They really didn't sell out. They just happened to make a song that was easier for the public to understand and then went back to making music that's more their style.
@johnnyrotten55074 жыл бұрын
@@Monocultured01 I know what you mean, but you are "sanitizing" your arguments. When I initially listened to The Damned, songs like "Street Of Dreams", "Smash It Up" and "New Rose" were not played on MTV or it's equivalent. You had to hear the music on an underground radio station and /or club that didn't cater to the tastes of radio executives. It was painful to see them on the same rock station as Samantha Fox, U2 & the like.
