Without The Damned life would be dull as a murky pond with rubbish in it. I seriously cannot constrain myself at their gigs and anyone looking at the top video will see why. They are the best band of all time ever and always and thank god they are still going strong. Am mightily glad they're not too big though as it always feels such a privilidge seeing them at relatively intimate venues with a nicely sized mosh pit. Ace to find there are others here who think the same. huzzah for the damned!

gloubloux, I am glad you explained what you "feel" when you listen to Punk. That is very important. I was 13 when Punk started and I was already in love with the more hippie type of bands like The Beatles and all the stuff from the early 70s. The problem is that I tend to associate Punk with Margaret Thatcher. I know this sounds crazy but she was the Prime Minister at that time and it appeared as a dark time in history... LOL... BTW, Nothing wrong with being antisocial from time to time;)

Best footage of Brian James I've ever seen, even if the director preferred to focus on Cap'n. You'd never know to look at his stage demeanor that he wrote the entirety of their first two albums. Love the tempo too, must have been shortly before James left the group.

This is a band who spawned from a London covered with trash because the trashmen striked, the flat lifts stunk of piss, this was the final nail in the coffin for UK hippies. Even if they were still floating about in 77 they were hiding by the time this was broadcast. Some of the best footage on youtube. I wish everyone posted better quality vids.

Neat Neat Neat - The Damned [London, England] - 1977 - "AMG Pick. Captain Sensible's purring snarl of a bass line kicks it off and then the whole band cranks it and is gone. ...became just as well-known a punk anthem for the band and the U.K. scene as a whole. Brian James (UK punk rock guitarist) penned song. - Damned Damned Damned [30th Anniversary Expanded Edition] (Castle US) (Disc 1)-2007. NOTE: Just get the single CD version and you won't be missing much.

You must have caught them on a bad day as they are one of the friendliest and most helpful bands in the country. Great band, way better than the Pistols, but they were bloody good too. At the 1st anniversary gig at the old Marquee club in 1977 and kept one mint free single, Stretcher case/Sick of being sick, sorry I frisbeed the others like everyone else did you should have been there. They were a really nice bunch of blokes too. Anyone remember Vanian and his partners stall at the old Kensington indoor market? What was the market called? It was right by High st Ken tube.

@bantyeggses Ya know who the first punk band were then ??? THE STONES ... they influenced all of them. It was thier attitude, plus all original punk was, was speeded up aggressively played rhythm n blues !! Even Brian James said that !
@gloubloux16 жыл бұрын
Yeah I understad what you mean, but for me punk is a music, a state of mind and especiallly a culutre(just like hippies). It's about having fun, provocation and make the people think and react. There is youth rebellion in it. Yeah sometimes I'm antisocial ^^ I'm in love with the fisrt wave of punk rock (late 70's) and I don't think must be considered as a trend (you know mohawks, spikes, Dr.Martens and stuff, more like an outfit).Punk for me is part of rock'n'roll that's it.
@mountainjustice13 жыл бұрын
Like the Damned but my two cents on earliest punk: Check out The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" from 1964. The opening chords sound more like 1976-7 punk to me than "My Generation." The Kinks punched holes in their amplifier with a knitting needle, cool.

@kjmacphee YES , The Sonics , thank you. But , it's too easy to start there .They were inspired , like any Northwest band worth it's salt , by The Wailers , who started in '57 or early '58 , and are considered by many to be the first Punk band , also Link Wray and The Wraymen. Lest we forget , too , all the great mid 60's Garage bands , along w/Sonics , that influenced The Damned and other bands with a clue. That's where Naz Nomad came from , but , no Hipster cred , no relevance.

@kabulpete - so why did legs McNeil choose Lou Reed to grace the cover of Punk Magazine Vol1, No.1? Punk would have never happened without bands like VU, Stooges, MC5, Suicide and NY Dolls, among others who laid the groundwork.
@SandraLondon6316 жыл бұрын
gloubloux, What it gets me though is when I used to know so many Punks who were not rebel at all and would insult foreigners back in the 80s, (just like the old farts would do). Then you have people like Sting who did not even pay his cook and she ended up suing him. He is also very snobbish.. However, when I think about the Hippies I tend to think about them as real rebels. John Lennon was pretty cool until he died and never changed his ideas.

Oh well, I only thought about the UK. So "New rose" was the first British Punk single. At least it's not that simple to talk about the very first punk band or single, there have been so many influences an "pre-punk" groups.
