🎥 More about this video:
Kick Streaming is the new and dangerous kid on the block of live streaming. It's like Twitch, except that it's closely connected to Stake Casino (one of the largest online gambling companies in the world) and allows unlicensed + unregulated gambling streams on its platform. In this video, I talk about why this is concerning, the ways that gambling has infiltrated the worlds of kids, and the disastrous financial consequences of platforms like Kick.

We need to stop sugarcoating & just say it: yes kick is just a funnel for stake. They pay millions of dollars even to people like IcePoseidon who are normally "just chatting"/"IRL" streamers to regularly gamble and teach their audience to gamble on stake.

So what? They have right to do anything they want with their money. Same as oil industries are lobbing against EV revolution which is bad for everybody but not for themselves. Same as any other businesses that take advantage of on human inability to resist or think for themselves. It is what it is. In this case you can still choose and you can just not watch the stream.

I have to admit that as someone who is very frugal I had the thought of “what IF I try gambling out just this once” and that even scared me, cause the thought can plant in my mind and manifest once I become an adult. And as someone who never makes decisions as foolish as that I really feel bad that many kids like me who might not be that mature yet (which is understandable) can be tempted into it way more easily, especially if they get exposed and used to to stuff like this at a younger, more vulnerable age. The 95/5 split is suspicious, but I still like that creators aren’t exploited that much, but this really got me thinking, what are they trying to do with this…
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
Creators are exploited, but in different manner - they are recruited to exploit their fans into becoming gamblers, so it's damage on a much bigger scale. I've seen quite some kick streams and it's remarkably heinous how streamers periodically follow their obligations to gamble on stream to teach their audience the mechanics of gambling (on stake) and open the doors for their fans to becoming gamblers themselves. Twitch paying streamers less is not "exploitation" per se, one might debate how that is unfair or not given the streaming + server costs for twitch, but hooking a generation of teenagers on gambling most certainly is exploitation - to which these streamers agree, so they clearly are not offended when they are doing the exploitation themselves.

Online gambling ads need to be disallowed. It's like advertising alcohol or cigarettes. Gross.
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
The tricky part is that the gambling ads got really clever, they basically fund streamers to disguise the ads as "normal streaming content", as if the streamer would do it without getting paid millions. That's how they are able to groom children into becoming gambling addicts without being "guilty" of advertising to children, tho they are doing exactly that.

@_aoe, I always thought Kick was a subsidiary of another big tech company, like when Microsoft had Mixer and Facebook with its own streaming service. I just assumed that if Kick could spend this much money, it would be associated with a large tech company and never bothered to look it up. However, Cara in this video shows that it's backed by large gambling companies that could potentially use the platform to target teenagers and draw them into the world of gambling. Usually the purpose behind gaming streaming sites is to showcase the latest in gaming or showoff individual skill. I didn't realize it could be hijacked to promote gambling.
@_aoe

@@abdullahalsheikh2557 yep. But I strongly believe that assumption that streaming = gaming shouldn’t only limit it to gaming. Although considering that Kick supports horrible people such as adin ross and gambling I really can’t stand by them here.

Hey! Not to mention that deals with streamers to stream stake gambling on kik not only include the payment but very likely also huge amounts of playing credit so that streamers can bet big money, desensitizing viewers to huge wins and losses with no downside to streamers themselves. All of this in an effort to not only get new gamblers but make them gamble big money

I like that you give advices and tips at the end of the video. The normalizing of gambling is an issue. Even in my country (France), Winamax which is an online sport betting company has been running very well made campaigns targeting urban youth who can often be the least well off but also heavily into sports. This targets the poors, their hopes, their passion. It's disgusting. I hate it. It's so easy to target vulnerable people like kids or youth who dream of the better life they see everywhere on screens....

Most people who smoke cigarettes started when they were young. Brain development during addiction causes more impulsive behavior etc. This is just another version of psychopaths finding a way to get kids addicted to their products. People who are obsessed with money are disgusting, go make music or something. And no, I am not talking about impoverished peoples focus on money. I’m talking about the doctors and CEOs and business men whose entire identity is founded on their obsession with wealth.

I had no idea what Kick even was but you explained it really well, if they’ve really built a new platform to hook young kids into gambling that’s pretty slimy. I agree with your point about how hard it must be to be a kid these days - if I as a millennial feel so much stress and anxiety about the forces fighting for my attention through social media, advertising, digital platforms etc, I can’t even imagine what younger kids who are still developing feel if they’re exposed to the same tactics. Modern technology is so interesting because in a lot of ways it’s really helpful and beneficial to society, but it’s also so new that the affects of some of it we might not even know for a while.

9:14 I relate very heavily to that statement. My childhood was a foreshadowing to many teachers on what children would become in the next few years. Unlike a lot of kids I was exposed to the internet very early in life and got deep into KZbin by the early 2010's. I was 9 when I had my first smartphone and sadly I was very bratty at that time because I was never happy with what I had I kept wanting to get the newest thing and the people at the store would know me by name because of how often I came there. It had to take the phone plan screwing up and my account getting shut down for me to be thankful to have what I have. By age 11/12 I gave up on changing phones and I went through a very dark period in 5th grade which made me do a lot of internal reflection (Unrelated). Even now as an adult I barely change my phone I keep it until it falls apart. The only technology I value is my computer because I do online college (which in itself is another story).

I used to have a flip phone, then I upgraded to a slide phone, then a knock-off blackberry. I am so very happy that my parents never had me on a plan. They would buy my sister and I minutes to put onto our phone and if we ran out then. Oh well. I was just thinking the other day that I'm finding myself more and more drawn to my phone. Looking at the amount of time I spend on it through the Wellness feature is mind boggling. I've been trying to use an app called Forest to help me stay away from my phone. It's nice seeing all the trees that I "grow" while being away for an extended period of time.

I absolutely love how you worded all of this. Amazing video and incredible explanation. This was extremely approachable while staying truthful to the reasons why kick is unsustainable Truth be told user generated content platforms are extremely expensive because they have to host content that gets billions of interactions but what's more important, they have to host billions of pieces of content that get absolutely no interactions, costing money while generating no revenue. While AWS in a big way and amazon in a smaller way subsidize twitch, they don't bring any new customers from it while kick is pretty much stake's marketing strategy, it subsidizes it because it directly benefits stakes profits. Hosting content for free is extremely expensive. Think how pictures IG let's you post or how many videos KZbin allows me to have, how many tweets I can do and how many hours I can stream for absolutely free. Compare that to how expensive it is to rent storage in the cloud like Google drive or Dropbox. Hosting content is expensive which is why so many companies operate at a loss, like Twitter and twitch, why there have been so many tech layoffs and why having an ecosystem like kick and stake that feeds off each other may be the only way to sustain free, user generated content platforms.

(same but Spanish, in case you find it useful since you're learning Spanish) 😁🙌🏻 Me encantó cómo explicaste todo en este video!

i watch kick streams on occasion and i do think the concern is a bit overblown. for the people who watch gambling streams there, sure, most of what's in this video applies, but, much like how twitch was a couple years ago, they exist in their own category. gambling is still i think the biggest, but viewers who watch just chatting, IRL, hot tub, and various gaming content still exist and mostly do not venture outside their preferred categories or streamers. i don't know to what extent kids are being funneled into online gambling and i think it would be good to see some stats on something like sign ups or conversions by age. most large streamers' audience, like xqc, are very diverse age-wise, and other big streamers like trainwreckstv, who co-owns kick, have an older audience. to me, kick is more like how twitch was back in like 2018, where things are more unregulated and streamers who are much more risky and edgy can thrive without having to fear being banned or scaring advertisers (there are none currently lol). depending on the kind of content you enjoy or your standards for responsibly using your platform, this could be either awful and concerning, or finally some respite from the oversensitive nature of most social media platforms. this is why so many newer streamers that resonate with gen z like yourrage, brucedropemoff, or adin ross moved over to kick. personally, i think its nice to see the competition and i like seeing the internet be a bit more raw and politically incorrect so long as things don't go too far twitch as a platform is not profitable and hasn't been since amazon acquired it, despite aggressively pushing advertising. they cannot afford to do the rev split that kick does and this will continue to drive creators away. just because amazon owns twitch does not mean they will keep it afloat and it honestly may be more profitable in the long run if amazon just sells the video livestreaming infrastructure as a service and let other companies figure out web hosting like kick does. some of what i said was outside the scope of the video, but i think all this taken into consideration with the stake's involvement makes kick's rise a bit more complicated. it really isn't just a platform dedicated to online gambling. the streamer/LSF politics going behind the twitch vs kick rivalry is also somehow relevant and interesting, albeit very convoluted and messy. there was a lot to dig into here and overall i enjoyed the video but i don't think i get behind your conclusions on kick as a whole

I would be hard pressed to say Kick is worse than Twitch. They're both bad.
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
You are missing the point heavily on this one. Twitch has gambling too, but it's a small portion besides the dominant gameplay content, in contrast, Kick's entire business model revolves around turning a constant stream of its audience into gambling addicts, otherwise kick could not exist. stake is willing to take the loss on kick's negative business model because they know how profitable gambling addicts make their stake platform. once a teenager is a gambling addict it can make them years of massive profit from a single addict, but they have already groomed a massive teenage audience and are making about $2.2 Billion in profit. The lifetime value of a gambling addict is highly profitable, it's basically a zombie who will work for you and hand in their paycheck to your casino every month.

It's all on the parents, what parent is letting their child gamble crypto online. And sadly, the difference between gaming and gambling isn't as large as you think. Basically all of the major games involve hidden gambling with predatory lootboxes and microtransactions.
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
you take on this is easily the worst I've heard. as with most vices, children hide these activities from their parents because they got lured into it and are unable to come out of it. gaming has lots of "inspiration" from gambling, there is no denying that, but to say there is not much difference between games and gambling like playing factorio and slots is utter insanity.
@Gabbro_1
@Gabbro_1 10 ай бұрын
@@inversebrah Factorio is a small indie title, most of the gaming industry is mobile gaming and the big triple A studios, overwatch, League, CSGO, Call of Duty, FIFA, Clash of Clans. Nearly every major live service game on the market has gambling mechanics. The only way a child is successfully gambling crypto (e.g. Stake) is if they have unrestricted access to large sums of money, so unless they're accepting bitcoin at their lemonade stand, the parents are bankrolling this. You can understand them letting this happen with video games as they're maybe innocent on the surface, but Crypto gambling is transparently hardcore gambling. The mother would see Jimmy on his ipad pulling the lever on the slots or spinning the roulette wheel. If there is a child with vices and they're actively concealing them, the parents have failed.
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
@@Gabbro_1 Everybody knows that "loot boxes" are basically gambling and those who oppose gambling also oppose loot boxes - some countries already banned them. However that does still not make your comparison any more honest or sane, the gameplay itself in Overwatch or League, CSGO Call of Duty, Fifa has nothing to do with gambling and you're trying to reach in bad faith to make your argument work. Your second argument is also false, there is no need to have "unrestricted access to large sums of money", children can already gamble with 10 bucks and start cultivating the habit. The methods of luring in children into gambling are so heinous that just blaming the parents is dishonest to the core.

Once again another STELLAR video! I'm always looking forward to your new videos. This video made me think of another video of yours where you talked about the normalization of gambling and how, really, it sneaks into our lives. quite a few years ago I fell down a rabbit hole of online claw machine games. I allowed myself to be consumed with this specific one called Toreba. I ended up spending an EASY $200 on this one claw machine just to win.. What was advertised as a "Super Plush Comfy One Piece Anime Blanket". It was such laughable quality as a blanket that I'm seriously wondering if it was translated wrong. Haha, because it works wonderfully as a blanket. The sad part is I spent another easy $100 on a SECOND "Blanket" of the same kind just a different variation of design. When I say easy I don't mean it was easy for me to make that money and spend it whilly nilly. What I mean is that it was easy to rack it up starting at $2.50 here $5 there and just the sheer build up of the cost, coupled with the hype of people watching that it really was easy to spend over $300 on 2 stupid towels that I honestly probably could have found online for cheaper. The scary part for me is that I now have children. I'll be it young ones, but children none-the-less. These sites are advertised to them not only through the typical Ads but through youtubers who play these games for content. I'm honestly so thankful for these types of video essays. They're really making me think more and more on what type of negative implications these things might have on my kids while growing up.

nope, kick will vanish over night the moment the law catches up and stops kick's nefarious methods of hooking teenagers on gambling. their whole business model relies on a constant stream of new gambling addicts that make it worth for stake to take a loss on kick's unsustainable & unprofitable business model.

@@inversebrahand how exactly is kick doing that? Gambling can is an optional category to see on the platform. There are way more streamers that don’t even gamble also.

@@verifiedwill Major streamers on the platform are literally paid to regularly gamble on stream and teach it to their followers. stake tolerates the loss on kick only because it drives them a profit on stake, everything else is delusion.

Gambling isn’t targeting kids dude.. you can’t even gamble unless you’re 18. It’s just a platform with gambling. You can say the same with KZbin and google. Plus it’s free will what’s wrong it? You have apex and etc, stop trying to put all of these weird things on it, all the extra stuff you tried to attach to to is false

@@Prof.Albusdumbledore not every site works like this and that's besides the point. Even if kids arent getting affected that much it doesnt means broadcasting gambling to thousands of people isnt an issue. IMO you shouldnt be able to advertise gambling under any circunstance, too risky.

Twitch allows sex workers to stream and promote their “content” how is this not morally wrong? The people criticizing kick for gambling are the same ones that promote sex too kids, which is worse?
@inversebrah
@inversebrah 10 ай бұрын
both are also on kick and even much worse, some streamers have literal intercourse on stream on kick. difference is, twitch is sustainable without all of that stuff, while kick's existence hinges on creating more gamblers for stake.
