Look guys, after a whole life believing that protein is found only in meat (among many other nutrition myths), one can have a hard time getting the thing straight. The meat industries have done a very good job keeping us in the darkness of ignorance, and there's a god reason: PROFIT. So, as usual, we fall in the trap, especially when advertising is so appealing, creative and misleading. Ancient people ate the food they used to eat not bearing in mind that those foods had certain nutriments, they simply went ahead and ate. Today's big problem is not the origin of foods but what we do to them. I bet you haven't noticed that we are the only beings on this planet who COOK their food, therefore altering its nutritional value and creating flavors (by combining flavors) that don't exist in nature. The food industries have very well learned about our weakness for combined flavors, especially artificial chemically made ones. So, the next time you see an "attractive" TV commercial advertising ham don't think about the proteins, think about the kind of edible crap that ham represents.

Honestly, I've seen many vegetarians and vegans, on the internet and in person, and not one of them looks sickly to me. They all look healthy, lively, thin, and strong. So don't know when I hear responses that vegans look sickly, it just makes me laugh. Maybe because no one knows what a healthy thin person looks like anymore.

Darlene DeCicco Me and my wife were both formerly sickly vegetarians.. we knew a couple Vegans in Portland who were totally fat.. Thanks for the talk, Dr Stanger. Agree with everything you're saying, except for Virgin Coconut oil. Coming from the first pressing of the coconut flesh, it contains many beneficial nutrients and compounds, and has been shown to support healthy cholesterol levels. Contains 60% Medium Chain triglycerides, broken down straight away for fuel, unlike long chain. Lauric acid in coconut oil is a potent anti-microbial, and is found in very few sources, one of which is Human breast milk.

I am truly enjoying your presentation Dr. Stanger. But I've stopped the video because I'm a little confused about how we get the amino acids. I am clear o that the essential aa come from plants but you also say we need plant protein as well. Do we get the "raw" form of the amino acid when we consume plants and/or do we get the protein and our bodies breakdown the plant protein into the amino acids that builds the proteins that we need?
@Treebard9 жыл бұрын
Robotics/STEM Club Digital Harbor High School Plants provide plant proteins. Our body, more specifically our digestive tract, breaks those proteins down into amino acids. I think at one point, she says about 99% of proteins are broken down into component aa's. The problems arise with that 1% of proteins that "get through" intact into the blood-stream. The immune system then can create antibodies to those proteins. With plant proteins, that causes little harm. However, antibodies to animal (meat) proteins are problematic, because these antibodies then can attack the body itself (autoimmune disease) b/c the body's proteins are so similar (being that we too are animals). Dr. McDougall (and others) taught me all this.

I’m not pro or con. But you misunderstand. The body doesn’t use protein directly in the form it is eaten, because the first thing that happens when you eat protein is that the digestive process breaks it down into its individual amino acids. Then, if you need a certain protein, the body constructs it out of the component amino acids. All plants and animals use the same group of amino acids, so it doesn’t matter where you get them.

Certainly we humans have the choice eat meat or dont eat meat, i have been vegan 15 years and am in excellent health, i have my blood work to prove it. Many of my friends of the same age have health problems related to thier diet. The ammount of meat consumed on average in western countries is at an all time high, at no time in our evolutionary history did we consume meat at such frequency and quantity as we are doing today. I would like to focus on the Word evolution, we had the freedom to evolve to where we are today yet we take away that freedom from the animals which we farm today, the animals you eat have been selectivly bred for our benefit. Compare the antelope in the savana which encounters a lion, the lion is hungry and tries to catch the antelope but the antelope has a good chance of escaping, this fast antelope will then reproduce other faster antelopes, its one small step in evolution. People who eat farmed meat give no chance for thier prey to escape, so when people try to compare us to other meat eating wild animals, then taking the above mentioned into account the argument is flawed. Also in the wild the hunter will kill the prey with considerably less suffering tan those farmed animals, because the wild animal was able to experience freedom and be with its family and feel the sensations of their bodies and environment, if a lion kills an antelope then there is a chase and the antelope is usualy brought down and killed. Farmed animals suffer from the day they are born, they are not able to live in thier natural conditions, they are not able to know a family, taken from their mothers, because of human greed, the animals are forced to live in small conditions and fed hormones, and treated extremely cruely by the poorly paid farm workers, diseases are rife in farmed animals, they are fed antibiotics, they live in fear, never able to run in the fresh air with an optomistic feeling, they know only dread, then when the time come for thier slaughter, they have to travel , often for days in cramped conditions, they arrive to the abatoir thirsty and hungry, yet they are given no refreshment, they are given no comfortable place to rest, thye are froced into pens ,where the smell of blood fills the air and the screams of dying animals is contagious, fear and dread, they wait in line knowing what is comming, when thier time comes, they might be lucky and death comes quickly but often it doesnt. The life of a farmed animal is the worst horror film out there. Yet we have a choice to stop this artocity, stop eating meat. A question, If aliens came down to earth and started to use thier superior technology to farm us in the same way we are farming animals, what would your argument be to make them stop?? After all you have the choice, meat or no meat.

Happy 50th! Me too! It takes a strong gut, and a healthy liver to be a healthy vegetarian because whole grains, beans and nuts are difficult to digest, and many people cannot digest them well enough to avoid malnutrition. Many people have their guts damaged as a baby, by accident. All it takes is regularly making baby formula too strong. Liver damage and clogging also starts from birth, with additives in immunisations, chemicals in skin care products, household sprays- the list is endless. Many vegetarians and vegans end up with a leaky gut, but most never talk about it. Eat whatever works for you, and without guilt.

I've been vegan for about 5 weeks with no oil and no nuts and minimal processed foods. I don't eat foods with added sugar either, but I may change that in the distant future. For now this is for weight loss and improved cholesterol level. My macro-nutrient ratios are 5%-fat, 10%-protein and 85% carbs. My weight dropped 16 pounds in 8 weeks (part of which was before full vegan), 8 pounds in 4 weeks and 4.8 pounds in the last 2 weeks. My waist has slowing been dropping and was at like 39.5" to 37.25" in those 16 pounds. That's not as fast as I expected but this is the first time I have measured my waist very carefully and conservatively. I think the inches per pound ratio will increase soon. I do work out average 200 calories per day but will pick up the pace a bit. My protein is 55g average daily. I am happy with this. I do some strength training with pushups and handstands and soon to be pull-ups again as well as L-sits. My legs are strong. I juggle the soccer ball regularly.

Soy is an Endocrine Disruptor and will cause a sluggish thyroid. There is a hypothyroid epidemic in the US (probably Britain too). Adrenal exhaustion too. Asian cultures traditionally used soy in fermented form only (miso, natto, tempeh), as a condiment and not as a meal or even a "milk". Modern Asian populations unfortunately have adopted a more western approach to soy. They're now reaping the detrimental effects on the body that westerners have been seeing for some time now.

Willcox, D. Craig Willcox, etc. who are the authors of the okinawa diet books. I have also seen Dr McDougall refer to the 1949 okinawa diet data. Common sense would suggest that even unprocessed vegan diets can suffer from deficiencies if not done right.
@rareneedle8 жыл бұрын
Dr. Stanger's facts about what proteins constitute are correct, and many of her points are valid...however she neglects to mention the high proportion of fish in Okinawan diets. True...they don't eat that much red meat compared to Western diets...but they still eat it. A lot of Okinawans are pig farmers. So, meat is likely a larger constituent than the 6-9% she proposes are in Okinawan diets. A lot of what she recounts as being the deleterious effects of high meat consumption are correct ie. inflammation, so I'm not completely disagreeing with her. I do disagree on the magnitude of harm she posits from eating meat. Certainly, meat can be enjoyed...just not to excess. And without having to resort to a vegetarian diet for health.
@adg80238 жыл бұрын
+rareneedle Part of my family is from Okinawa originally. The older generation known for longevity do not consume diet with "high proportion of fish". The portion there is considerably smaller than what is considered portion serving here, and they don't eat it every day. The elderly Okinawans actually consume more firm Okinawan tofu than fish and on more regular basis, this is from my personal observations and also being around the culture.
This woman knows exactly what she's talking about. Anyone who disagrees with her is just ignorant to the facts of proteins. Of course, this is due to the meat and dairy industry which spans 550 million dollars per year to let us know that these two foods are what we need to be healthy. We do not need meat. MrKimchiNinja You didn't really say anything on how it works. We evolved on a plant-based diet. That's why our body's primary source of energy comes from carbs, not protein or fat. In nature, we are way too pathetic to catch animals for food. We lack the speed, the claws, the teeth and the digestion to consume animals. If we were evolved to eat animal fat and protein, we wouldn't have diabetes or heart disease. In any case, there's no need to consume anything that comes from animals in this modern society. If you have access to the Internet, then you have enough resources to be vegan.

It is amazing how these misconceptions even exist. I'm curious how much protein someone building large amounts of muscle would need. It's possible that building large muscles healthily simply takes more time than when using large amounts of supplements. Or, maybe it doesn't. Either way, the majority of people need educated on these things. Unfortunately, mainly just vegans and vegetarians talk about it. Since so many vegans and vegetarians can be insanely religious about their diet and even anti-human (animals > human life), a lot of people don't take them seriously. Nothing about this wonderful presentation suggests that someone shouldn't eat animal products or meat; it just shows that they shouldn't eat a lot. So, taking an equally extreme stand in the opposite direction turns a lot of people off from listening.

+Austin P I don't know why you think vegans think animals > human life but that is plain wrong. If you want reasons why someone shouldn't eat animal products or meat, go look at the World Health Organization report/warning on the subject, which was around the time you made the post.

Tony Martin I agree. What I meant is that the loudest of vegans or vegetarians tend to have that crazy notion. That turns many reasonable prople cold toward the vegetarian community. That turning away is unfortunate. I didn't know about that report. I will definitely read it, thank you. Since my post, I have learned more about muscle gain. The great majority of athletes and such take legal amounts of steroids (a best-kept secret). I think the perception of how quickly the human body grows muscle and how much muscle it can grow has been distorted. So, I withdraw my comment about muscle gain. A controlled experiment would need conducted where it is KNOWN that no participants are taking steroids before any conclusions are made.

daleon96 The consciousness of the individual determines the quality and longevity of existence. Matter has no self intelligence whatsoever. The ninety per cent of seeming missing intelligence that afflicts the human mind lays in spiritual self discovery. The science is there, always has been, but the mind's hatred of Truth resists it, thereby inflicting itself with its own morbidity and self ignorance. This is the human game and it can change when the mind is willing to admit its error, open up and embrace enlightened consciousness which includes perfect Life, perfect Mind, perfect Man, perfect Love. This is how Jesus lived.

daleon96 What happens is fad diet advocates take a very small minority of the population that may benefit from their diet then extrapolate their findings and try and convince the rest of us that theirs is the only diet to follow. Surprisingly , perhaps the one person who said his diet is just one of a number of ways to lose weight, and that it may suit only part of the population was a Dr Atkins. As he said, no size fits all.

'Your brain won't work without glucose; it always needs some glucose' She lost all credibility right there. So she thinks we'd just die without glucose?
@thepanda978210 жыл бұрын
Actually yeah, there are certains cells in your body that only run on glucose without exception, Example: The kidneys. Your body needs it so much that it is will to eat it's muscles, turn them into glucose just to have it. Your body does need some glucose to survive, it only gets this glucose from carbohydrates or protein. Carbohydrates are the easiest to obtain this need because if you were to get it from protein, it would most likely come directly from your muscles (as protein can only be used, re-used or excreted, basically it has to be in use for your body to keep it in your body, there isn't a way to store large amounts of protein, just as much as your cells need to grow or repair).
@thepanda978210 жыл бұрын
Even paleo advocates say that to be healthy you need at least some carbohydrates.
@zhazi06710 жыл бұрын
We can make glucose from other sources such as fats or protein, all three are interchangeable. So even if we are not consuming carbohydrates, we can turn fats and protein into glucose.
@thepanda978210 жыл бұрын
Actually no, the only macronutrients your body can make glucose out of are carbohydrates and protein, fat creates a different energy that most of our body is capable of using, though sometimes not quite efficiently, however there are other cells that won't use this, they NEED glucose, they refuse to use anything but. SO, your body uses protein or carbohydrates and converts them into glucose for those cells that need glucose to do their jobs. The problem with using protein for glucose is that it can't be stored like carbohydrates can and therefore it will directly come from the structure of the cells causing weakened muscles and bones which are often symptoms of people suffering from malnutrition among other things causing poor health, as shown in the video, it also leaves behind a toxic chemical in the body that carbohydrates don't. So it basically boils down to why wouldn't you simply use a macronutrient that supplied energy to all your cells instead of having to rely on 2 that, when not monitoring your diet and health vigilantely, could cause damage to you. I'm not saying that people don't need protein or fat, they are important, however they're jobs should be for other things than giving energy like lubricating joints and providing structure to your muscles and leave the energy giving to the carbohydrates since it's what they're designed for. Really if you were to have a high fat diet, it would also HAVE to be higher protein since you would constantly have to re-supply your body with protein when it's used to simply recycling it and not using it as a glucose resource. Also your problems wouldn't be solved by just simply having a high protein diet, again your body can't really store a whole lot of protein, you'd have to be eating basically all the time and again watch your health for cholesterol, L carnitine, etc (since I'm guessing this high protein diet wouldn't be plant based). While all you gotta do with high carb is make sure your getting enough calories and a wide enough range of plant food, take a B12 supplement (though everyone should be taking one since B12 deficiency is actually quite common across all sorts of diets) and go for regular check ups to make sure you're getting enough nutrients (again which everyone should be doing since nutrient deficiencies are common among all diet types).
@zhazi06710 жыл бұрын
So you're trying to say that the Glycerol backbone of Fatty Acids cannot be used for Gluconeogenesis? ... It's not the most efficient way of producing glucose, but in times of need like starvation, it can be used.

Okinawa diet also seems to be low calorie. I have been trying out 1,000 calorie diet recently to see if it can help lower my blood sugar. For starch, can try a variety instead of just grains. Even legumes have starch and large amount of greens like kale also has significant carb grams. Other starch sources are tubers like sweet potato, roots like beets and carrots, sago palm stem starch, fruit vegetables like pumpkin, fruits like breadfruit and plantain, etc.

Thank animal protein...
@KadrickNinness10 жыл бұрын
MyLaura33 While I agree that the influence of Animal Protein is mostly to the acidic, there is a shortage of evidence that it's a problem unless in relation to absurd dietary intake, that makes animal protein the key influence in the pH balance. People with a reasonable proportion of animal protein, who aren't eating a 2 ounce t-bone at every dinner, won't necessarily have an acidic body. If the rest f their diet are high quality alkalizing materials like leafy greens. In the spirit of truth however, there is also a fallacy that meat is a magical container of nutrients that can only be found in meat. Like the B-group nonsense.

Cannot assume unprocessed vegan diet will have no deficiencies. The 1949 okinawa diet (almost vegan) was deficient in vitamin b2 (riboflavin), vitamin b12, vitamin d (not a problem if have enough sunlight exposure), calcium (505 mg only) and zinc. Women with deficient lactation was around 17%. Even though the 1949 okinawa diet did not have pickled vegetables, salt intake was still 1133 mg. Thanks for the reference. An interesting paper. The paper did show lower than RDA intakes for some nutrients, however, given they are some of the longest lived healthiest people in the world, the question naturally arises whether they suffered any ill effects from this. The RDAs have a fairly high built-in safety margin and assume a western diet, so their nutrient intakes may have been adequate for them.

One reason we eat animal protein is that the plant food industry is much more labor intensive during harvesting and there is a lower profit margin on plant based food. As a result plant based food producing industry tends to be more collective or "communist" or "socialist". Animal based food industry is less labor intensive and harvesting can be accomplished by fewer people. This fits the commercial, or capitalist, form of social organization much better.

Can someone please help me? My family (me, my wife, and two children) recently started a vegetarian diet. We had been on this diet for about four months, when I suddenly realized that we were losing muscle mass and our bodies were becoming very loose and soft. Not surprising, we were not as strong as before either. At the same time that I was losing muscle, my gut seemed to be getting bigger. My body was slimmer everywhere else, except my stomach. What am I doing wrong?

1949 okinawa diet was around 1700 calories which seems to be short by about 200 calories of what they needed. Calorie restriction has its advantages & disadvantages. Before starting on a new diet, it is probably safer to compute the calories needed so that unintentional overeating or undereating can be monitored & avoid surprises. Today, I ate a bowl of kale, bowl of carrots, bowl of beets for breakfast and noticed that these don't have a lot of calories even though the amount of food is a lot.

Nutritional yeast and mushrooms can also be significant sources of protein for vegans. Asian vegetarians use mushrooms as a meat substitute and a protein source. Fungi are more closely related to animals since fungi don't do photosynthesis and fungi use dissolved organic compounds from other lifeforms. Mushrooms also have more micronutrients and prevent many diseases so are much better than animal products.

At 13:05: "The essential amino acids are made by plants... because they take a lot of metabolic energy... they are hard to put together...". Is that correct? I thought we just lacked the enzymes needed to put them together from some substrate but I can't seem to find this information. The idea that we just can't make them because we are not "solar-powered" likes the speaker says, just doesn't sound right to me. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Nature never wastes anything, Alfredo. The body conserves energy and resources if it doesn’t have to make something that it can easily find in abundance. I suspect that over centuries, if the food source became less abundant, the proper genes would evolve, or be activated epigenetically to produce the necessary enzymes from wherever it can source the substrates needed to support the enzymatic action. This may require eating more food for the extra energy needed, or, by that time the habitat may have changed in other ways that make some other process unnecessary, thereby free-ing up some energy. It’s all very awesome and complex beyond the human minds capability to apprehend the whole picture. All our energy comes from the Sun, one way or the other.

There seem to be some contradictions, soy milk is NOT a highly processed food, yet vegetable oils are? Did I misunderstand? Then there is the comment someone else made about the Okinawan diet, which made me wonder about the Inuit diet - I wonder if there have been studies of this high animal protein diet? Perhaps it is misinformed to gloss over the genetics of long established indigenous populations and the relationship to their local biome?
@NZ.YouTube8 жыл бұрын
+Phull Kname (nick) Yes, there are a lot of studies about that kind of diet.You can easily find some of them googling inuit diet. I read about that for the first time in the book "Why We Get Fat".
@TheJadeFist8 жыл бұрын
+Phull Kname (nick) The inuit diet is basically an atkins diet, while its true that it can lead to certain benefits the down sides far out weight them. They suffer from higher amounts of heart diseases and other cholesterol atherosclerosis induced problems such as strokes, and alzheimers, as well as osteoporosis, and have an over all lower average life span. Atkins himself died from a heart attack caused by atherosclerosis. Soymilk is mostly just soy bean soaked water + plus some boiling or whatever. Where as oils are heavily concentrated oil from their selected sources. edit: As far as Okinawa, they on average consume around 1% of animal products in their diets. Japanese in general also have a more active lifestyle, and a heavy fish based diet compared to the west and eat a large variety of ingredients giving them a more micro nutritionally complete diet, Dr McDougal in one of his presentations goes into a bit of detail about mortalitiy rates of large studies of vegitarians, vegans and pescatarians, showing that a pescatarian diet provides the omega 3's that lower risk of heart attacks and certain other causes of death (he more specifically referenced a Mediterranean diet) that many veggies don't get. He also goes on to show that a vegan diet can obtain these benefits without the cholesterol and other baggage of the fish via eating things like flax seed, or nuts on a regular/daily basis. Many people who go vegan/vegetarian don't always study the nutrition, so while cutting out major risk factors for mortality and dementia, sometimes don't replace sources of omegas and B12, in effect countering the benefits in longevity of eliminating cholesterol and trans fats, by introducing a deficiency that increase those same reduced risk factors. (also Saturated fats do exist from vegan sources and those are to be avoided as well, IE coconut oils, sunflower, saffron and a few others, instead to rely more on Olive/Canola which lack saturated). I don't know if he directly mentioned pescatarians befitting from this, but he did talk about how these different types of fats and such and more or less explained the trend, and that the same benefits can be obtained via a vegan source and infact doing so eliminates more risk factors that seafood. edit: not mcdougal, Dr Greger

In the 1949 okinawa diet, they were slightly deficient in vitamin b12 due to their daily animal products being < 5%. They seem to have fixed this with more animals about 2x a month or monthly via festival celebrations. Based on the traditional diets of poor people, minimum protein or below minimum protein (plant based like legumes based) seems healthier than the high protein diet (animal based) of Americans and vitamin b12 deficiency can be fixed with a daily b12 tablet.

I'm not an expert in nutrition by any means, but what makes sense to me is to take a look at world class athletes( Bolt, Phelps, etc) and see how they eat. I would assume they eat very balanced diets (specific to them however) and perform at the highest level. For them to eat a diet without protein would be like fueling a racecar with fuel that doesn't have octane. I think if a diet such as theirs is good enough to perform at an elite level, then it should also be good for you and me, assuming you mold it to your specific needs.

Today, just got my annual blood urea nitrogen (bun) results. Normal range is 6 to 20 mg/dL and mine has gone down to just 5. My bun from past years was closer to 10. Looks like I am really close to my minimum protein intake and I don't have much excess protein that creates blood urea nitrogen waste products so my liver and kidneys do not have to work much in getting rid of waste. I also drink lots of water which probably also lowered the bun.
