What dangers does the plane stowaway face? More than you may think.
"Wheel-well stowaways are people who attempt to travel in the landing gear compartment, also known as the wheel bay or undercarriage of an aircraft. Between 1947 and June 2015, a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) researcher had documented 113 such attempts on 101 flights. These 113 people were all male and predominantly under age 30. There were 86 deaths, a 76 percent fatality rate, with many unidentified decedents. There may be additional undocumented cases of wheel-well stowaways. A further 19 incidents, identified since 2015, are listed here.
Wheel-well stowaways face considerable risk of death during all phases of flight. Some have been unable to remain in the well during takeoff and landing and have fallen to their death. Immediately after takeoff, the landing gear retracts into the wheel wells, with the potential to crush the stowaway. If the stowaway is able to avoid physical injury, they still face hypothermia and hypoxia risks at the extremely low temperatures and low atmospheric pressure at high altitude, as well as hearing damage from prolonged exposure to the dangerously high noise levels outside the cabin."

yea they pressurize the cargo hold so its only a little chilly vs deathly cold and there is actually air in there to breath so its alot less dangerous to be in there still not particularly safe if there is turbulence ect. but not suicidle

Good vid as always Qxir - nice one There was also the poor sod in 2019 who fell out of a Kenyan airways flight inbound over London when the wheels opened up.. "A next-door neighbour, who asked not to be named, told the Press Association that the man fell just a metre from a resident who was sunbathing in his garden. “I heard a ‘whomp’. I went upstairs to look out of a window,” he said. “At first I though it was a [homeless person] asleep in the garden. “He had all his clothes on and everything. I had a closer look and saw there was blood all over the walls of the garden … I realised immediately that he had fallen. “So I went outside and it was just then the neighbour came out and he was very shaken. He had been sunbathing and he had landed one metre away from him.” "Describing the victim, he said: “One of the reasons his body was so intact was because his body was an ice block.”

There was a stowaway incident a while, back on a US airways (now American) flight from Charlotte to Philadelphia. The flight is a relatively short one, but it was enough to knock the stowaway unconscious, and he fell out of the wheel well, and to the ground landing on the street. The homicide investigators in Philadelphia could not figure out what happened, they said his injuries were consistent with a fall not a murder. Then they realized there were planes flying over and luckily they had enough imagination to figure out what might’ve happened.

That scene from that movie is pure fantasy 🤣😂 See when he loses his grip and uses that axe thing to stop him falling off the plane….In real life you wouldn’t be able to grip onto the axe handle and would fall to your death….And if by some miracle you did manage to keep hold of the axe handle, the forces exerted when that axe digs into the plane is going straight into your shoulder joint…..It would ether dislocate your shoulder, causing you to fall to your death, or even more likely, you’d be falling to your death with a missing arm.

I'm a serving police officer in the UK. About 2 years ago, in the summer of 2021, there was a crime scene in place for a body that was found in a field, the field was some distance from a road and even that road had no pavement on either side and cars often sped down it a lot, it was a narrowish two way road. A dog walker one morning found a body in the field and called it in, the first unit arriving on scene literally had to drive their vehicle through the gate, into the first field, through the whole field and across into the next field. It had been raining heavily overnight and the field was extremely muddy and slippery, as a result the car nearly got stuck numerous times. Eventually the officers located the body with assistance from the dog walker who had to wait for them at the gate by the road, a crime scene was put in place and the body was collected a few hours later by undertakers, at the time they were unable to verify the identity of the deceased due to the state of the body. The location of said field played a key part, it's right under the approach path to Gatwick airport, and also directly underneath one of the holding patterns used by Heathrow Airport, planes will literally complete a loop and fly over this field in a holding pattern for Heathrow, or often pass straight over on approach and sometimes on exit from Gatwick airport. It was believed that the body had fallen from a plane, but it was unknown when, the fields were all privately owned by a farmer so most people don't walk through it, the odd dog walker passes through every now and then but it was suspected the body had been there for at least several days, possibly up to 1 week before being discovered. The death was deemed "suspicious" due to the injuries present on the body and as such the crime scene was in place for several weeks. I don't work in our CID unit but I don't believe they ever got to the bottom of how the death occurred or the identity of the deceased, other than it was a male.

Airplane mechanic here. If you wish to stowaway an airplane I recommend the avionics compartment. Its pressurised and quite warm from the computers. Just bring some ear protection because the ventilation system is a bit loud. I was born and brought up in West London, under the usual flightpath to Heathrow (sometimes we had 'quiet' days when the wind was in the other direction).Planes would literally march overhead at peak times, one after the other, and you could see that they all lowered their undercarriage at about the same point. Here's where this gets relevant. Under the same path, there was a B&Q depot in Richmond (B&Q is a DIY store in the UK - not bad, but Wickes has better deals). Every now and then, you couldn't go in as it was surrounded by Police barriers. Viewers of the video (and this channel) have probably immediately guessed why. Yes indeed, a frozen, and usually almost naked, body had landed in their car park, the routine landing procedure having a greater accuracy than the famed Norden bombsight. The nakedness was caused by air whipping away loose clothing on the way down. I'm guessing each one was a personal tragedy driven by desperation, but shamefully to admit, you sort of got used to it in a strange way.

Speaking of schiphol deaths (amsterdam airport). When I was taking my drivers licence I met a cleaner from Schiphol, and my roommate was someone who loads the bay. They both spoke of extreme high mortality rates which are being hidden by the airport. The cleaner told me about immigrants hanging themselfs after having ti return without a child, or not being let into the country. And the workers at schiphol are all imported, extorted and sometimes freeze to death in the company freezers. They fainted because the sudden switfh of temperature and no one would go looking cause they just assume you are slacking of. Besides that we apparently import thousands of kilos of living bees from china. Edit: I want to clarify about the imported workers. Not all workers, but the people who work in cargo and out of site are mostly from other countries who started working with the promise of being able to send money back to their family. A lot of money gets stolen of their checks, and they live un tiny, overcrowded houses provided by their mother company. Schiphol has recently been in the news for inhuman work conditions, and what has been released officially is only the tip of the iceberg of the schmuk that goes on there. Air cargo planes and wide body passenger planes utilize what ground personnel refer to as either "huts" for air cargo or "cans" for wide body passenger luggage. These are essentially aluminum boxes shaped to fit interior of the plane often large enough to stand up in. The reason for this is twofold; the first reason is it allows cargo or luggage to be sorted by the contents final destination and that it would simply be too labor intensive to load these large aircraft one item at a time. Once the cans or huts are loaded they are delivered to the waiting aircraft where they are rolled onto a large scissors lift like contraption and raised up to the proper height. Then a series of powered rollers moves the container from the lift into the aircraft where more powered rollers deliver it back to its final position in the airplane. I worked on the ramp when I was in college both for Delta and DHL. So I don't remember which training session I heard this at, but one of the supervisors warned us about the dangers of loading these containers. Apparently while one was being moved via the powered conveyor system within the airplane, it became slightly twisted stopping its progress, which is not unusual. A senior ramp employee took it upon himself to go into the aircraft in order to jockey the container back into its proper position. Unfortunately, he had neglected to tell anyone else that he was going to do this. The next bit was unclear as to whether the remaining crew noticed that the jam seemed to have cleared or were never aware of it in the first place and simply thought that the senior team member had stepped away for a few moments, but they continued the loading process while he was in the plane. This means he almost certainly would have heard the noise of the next container being loaded and seen it moving down. The powered rollers of the interior towards him but he would have been powerless to do anything to stop it by then. No one would have heard him scream and he certainly wouldn't have been strong enough to push a fully loaded and properly aligned container back. They are all so shaped to utilize the maximum amount of volume within their interior space, meaning there is no room to squeeze past one either.. He became trapped in between the two containers. The loading was completed. The doors were shut. And the plane deported from Cincinnati to Seattle. When the Seattle ground crew began to unload the plane they found him exhausted from having had to stand pressed between the containers for the duration of the flight but otherwise none the worst for wear. Fortunately the containers don't move with that much force and the front side is a canvas or vinyl curtain on most of the containers which gave him a little to remain standing in. It is also extremely fortunate for him that the area remains temperature controlled and pressurized throughout the flight. He apparently refused medical treatment and was given a hotel room for the night and a return business class ticket the next day. He was apparently also compensated a small amount for having been placed in the situation even though it was largely his fault.

What I find particularly nuts is that this photo was taken in 1970! It’s not like today where practically everyone has a phone capable of taking photos in their pocket. “Lucky” photo indeed…

What blows me away is how these individuals did not expect cold when mountains at their highest elevations can perpetually be capped in snow.

Yeah. I think most of them have been on a flight before and naively believe that the pressure / temperature they experienced in the cabin would be similar.

In the cargo area of the C17 there is a small window that allows the crew to peek into the gear well to inspect. Imagine what they saw. The gear is HUGE on a C17, the hydraulics crushed people, cut them in half, etc. And they could see into the gear well through that window and see the...mess... Also they were afraid the engines were going to suck people in, they had to use low power settings to slowly speed up enough to get away from the crowds, then when clear of the people finally push the power up, so they didnt ingest human "FOD" and frag out their engines. When they lowered the gear to land later, bodies and parts of bodies dropped out.

Wow you actually got it right by saying your body will have trouble absorbing oxygen because of the lower pressure, when most people say that there is “less oxygen” at higher altitudes, which is not true

I used to work in aviation. One of the older guys told me about a time when a flight arrived from Johannesburg and dumped half a frozen corpse on to the runway when it landed. The other half was stuck, frozen and crushed, inside the wheel well. Interestingly, this had nothing to do with the topic of conversation at the time. I guess he just felt like telling me.
