I am from Alberta and there are only 2 “balanced” trainers in Calgary. I tried to adopt a dog and when asked where was I going to train I told them the one that I was thinking about. I am now on a no adopt list. I tried to adopt an Akita cross from another shelter that had been chasing buffalo for 2 years. Took him for a walk in a park, they had a harness on him. I am 5’2” and he did not even know I was at the end of the leash. I realized I was out my depth and if I was going to commit to this dog the harness had to go. When I brought him back I told administrator of the shelter, I really liked him but would not use harness. You would think I had said I was going to kill him. I had to commit to their classes and only use a harness and positive only, absolutely no corrections. I had to walk away from him. I could not handle him. I finally got a lovely pure bred male Australian Shepherd. I wanted to go to a balanced training group but there was a wait list. I tried the positive only, thinking he was so easy to train I’ll try it. I wasted a year on that nonsense and ended up with 100% trained dog that could only behave in a vacuum and if I had treats. In the real world he was a nightmare. Between Robert’s videos and the balanced training group I finally got into, I now have a great dog that I can take anywhere. He has gone on an escalator, an elevator, even a rapid transit train that we used to get to dog friendly pub. He can meet people and dogs politely on leash. We managed all this with a martingale and a few corrections. I was so frustrated with him I thought I should use a prong. A couple of trainers in the group asked me to give the martingale a try and if that did not work, we would go to a prong. It only took 3 classes to get on the right track. Yesterday I dropped his leash downtown on a busy sidewalk and he quite happily walked beside me. 3 months ago if I had done that he probably would have been hit by a car.

I adopted an Akita who was already 4 years old and had been taken from her first owner by the police and been adopted out. We were her third owners. With no socialization if I had not used balanced training she would never had come around. She eventually became an AKC certified therapy dog making hospital visits. First, balanced is the way to go, second, Akitas are a hardheaded strong dog, there's no way she could have trained positive only. Congratulations on the shepherd. Frankly at 5'2'' an Akita would have been too much. Wise choice.

I am an Akita owner, and my male Akita was NOT an easy walk early on. He just wanted to do his own thing and he didn't respond well to recall or the lead. However, I worked with him using balanced methods and now I can walk with him in public off leash. Videos of this are on my Channel. There are still occasions where I will keep a leash on him as there are some dogs who will see my confident Akita and respond with a challenge. I'm not even talking about barking at him or lunging at him. He knows what those dogs are up to and ignores them. It's the dogs that freeze and stare bullets at him that I must keep him leashed around, but that's it. He knows what that body language means so he responds in kind to that energy. He is still a work in progress, but I have I have improved him to such a degree that it's incredible. I don't believe a purely positive trainer could have accomplished this much with my dog considering where he began. He doesn't care about treats or praise when there is something more interesting around him. He had to be shown not just what we want him to do but also what we don't want him to do. Some behaviors require a correction, and dogs know this because DOGS use harder corrections themselves to other dogs.
@garypudup21095 ай бұрын
@@GetFitwithDogs We loved our Akita. They are an acquired taste and also require dedicated owners. We trained with ours sometimes 3-4 times daily and positive only would not have worked. When walking ours and coming across dogs we would always tell people it was a bad idea to let them interact since we didn't know how the other dog would behave and it wouldn't go well if they disagreed. Kudos to you to getting yours to the stage he's at.

The problem with dealing with these people is that you cannot please them no matter what you do. When you give them any video time it just feeds into their egos. The best thing to do is just ignore them because at the end of the day it's really all about them. Keep up the good work!
@thankmelater12545 ай бұрын
No to "ignoring them", because they already have the pulpit, stage, choir. It's nothing THEY did to gain that position, western society is swirling around the drain from the attack on every country's society from within. They are all on board with everything WOKE. That is their power source...the destroyers of our way of life.
@NatalieGraziani5 ай бұрын
It's not about pleasing them, or feeding their ego. It's about advocating for dogs, and you cannot advocate if you ignore what's going on. Yes Robert and the likes could ignore the attacks on them themselves, realistically it's water off a dogs back. What we can't ignore is the fact the governing bodies and the general publicare listening to their false claims of abuse if you humanely correct a dog. The bans which are being implemented across the world are being done so because the activists are getting the attention they seek from governing bodies, from kindhearted people, their scientific opinions (because they are opinions, not facts) are being heard first and foremost, creating a mass delusion they(the activists) are kind, and us trainers who use aversives are animal abusers and don't care about dog welfare. To ignore that false propaganda is injustice for dogs. To say Robert and the likes of him should ignore, and not respond is effectively saying we should just plead guilty to animal abuse, to not defend the fact we have dog welfare at the forefront of our mission, to not advocate for dogs to live, be safe, get genetic fulfillment, and live happy healthy lives. To ignore is absolutely giving merit to the "cult" mentality that ignoring bad behaviour is effective in changing dangerous behaviour, and Robert and like minded trainers (including myself) just do not agree, we are of the belief to fix a mistake and not repeat it you need to be educated you are making a mistake, and that requires being informed that. Ignoring is not educating. Is he trying to educate the "cult" mentality, well that would be nice, but an unrealistic goal. He and others are trying to educate the mass public, governing bodies, that it's okay to teach your dog yes and no, as long as it's done humanely, with compassion, empathy and understanding. To ignore false declarations, propaganda and accusations is as effective as giving a dog a treat for mauling someone and saying good job.

I'm in the Bay Area, and worked with a team of four trainers (balanced trainers = trainers) to rehabilitate my Anatolian Shepherd/Border Collie mix who was beyond my abilities, at that time. I learned SO much from what I was taught and I've posted in several different platforms what helped her. I've rarely been attacked, but I have lost a friend in rescue who is, sadly, an ideologue of "pure positive" approaches. In the meantime, my dog Leila lives her best life. We walk off leash everywhere throughout the East Bay Regional Parks in Oakland. My relationship with her and the way I've learned to be with her has changed my life for ever. I will always be grateful to the people who taught me the best way to be with dogs. As their safe, trusted, loving and unshakable leader.

"Balanced" training saved my high prey drive/dog reactive (suspected) bullyxboxer rescue. I was so naive when I adopted her and my SPCA is "purely positive" so when I adopted her she had a front clip harness and they encouraged me to continue with it and their training class. She came home with me 5 months before the covid shutdown. I got hyperfixated on dog training and read anything I could about it. I thankfully found some amazing resources including GRC and Jay Jack. I found outlets (spring pole, weight pull) for her alongside training using a prong, proper corrections and counter conditioning. She still cannot be around other dogs, but her impulse control is a million times better as well as our relationship. My bf showed me your videos, and now we listen to them together and it opens up so many new views and conversations about dogs. 🖤

For me the thing that gets me is when they go back to their default response of "you use pain to control your dog" rather than engaging in an active conversation about what is best for dogs. My dog gets more freedom than 95% of the pet dogs I see locally and we have been able to achieve that through proper conditioning and long term training using an ecollar. I live in rural Ireland and my dog had a problem with wanting to chase sheep at 6 months - this type of problem would mean I could NEVER let him off lead where I live (farmland) unless I worked through this problem. I was able to completely resolve my dog's problem through using a combination of ecollar training and scatter feeding. It blows my mind when I can show a before and after video of my dog 1 lunging at sheep, 2 being off lead around sheep and the response is oh you use pain..

I actually learned about corrective training from a friend after sharing how hard it was. I didnt find these videos until I specifically looked for off leash corrective training. Yet ive been watching trainig videos since 6 months before we got him. im day 2 with a pinch collar and he is 10x happier. I can allow him outside, he doesnt pull on the leash my daughter can now walk with him... Hes holding a down stay. As i started learning about "correction" and how dogs determine leadership i was furious that none of these trainers mentioned it, they just recommended treats and toys to buy. I noticed the “purely positive” group has been pumping out their ads on overdrive lately. Their ads are popping up every day I get on KZbin now. If people want to train PP, that’s fine. Go train that way but don’t attack trainers that use tools in a responsible, humane way. Do they not understand that because of their ideology, they are HURTING dogs NOT helping dogs. Without fair corrections and without being able to use tools in a humane way, so many dogs will be put down or become a danger to people and/or other animals. At 7:00 that literally had me teary eyed. I’ve brought in dogs in the past that the owners couldn’t handle. Mostly but not all were working bred dogs that the owners thought would be cool to own but then couldn’t handle them. They needed good management. They needed fair corrections and guidance on what is right and what is wrong. They all became wonderful dogs that lived out good lives with me. Ironically I’ve personally seen people that are against tools and against corrections of any kind but those dogs they own are being fed poor diets, not getting the mental stimulation they need, running loose in the streets, over fed, or have behavioral problems that are sometimes down right dangerous because those dogs haven’t been given guidance. THAT in my opinion is abuse. My dogs are fed a high quality diet, they love training time, they have mental stimulation, regular grooming, the best I can afford of everything and when needed they get fair and humane corrections because I have their best interest in mind. They have fulfilled lives and they love me because of how well I care for them and because of the clear guidance I have given them. Those people just can’t wrap their minds around what it takes to fulfill a dog’s life and what is and what is not abuse. It’s like it’s just not in their mental capacity. And I agree I think they just jump on whatever new protest train comes along that lines up with that radical way of thinking. It’s sickening to me. It seems like it’s the loudest voices that gets heard not what is common sense. Not what is right or wrong. Just the loudest voices. We need to stand up against this nonsense and get louder with our voices because being quiet and ignoring it, isn’t making this stuff go away. They’re trying to take over and they’re hurting dogs with this nonsense! Thank you Robert and Janet! You guys are fantastic!

One thing i noticed about them is: all those new pp trainers have almost no to not a single video of their work with dogs. There are so many channels now that have only one purpose, that is to critice balanced trainers as bloodmad savages. In the old times, when Karen Pryor made her book, she at least did a few videos with training dogs. Not very good ones, but still. Ian Dunbar made some videos as well, but you can't say, he was a pure positive trainer. Those new guys and gals, all they do is running their mouth. Not a single video of how they work, and if some have videos, they are so bad, that makes you cringe. Zak George couldn't train a plant to grow up a wall, for example. I challenged quite a few here in Austria, with not so much as a comment back. I always tell them you give me the baddest case you can find in any shelter, and in six weeks i have the dog to walk with him off leash through any high distraction environment. Than i do the same with you with the baddest case i can find, you do the same. Never ever i got an answer to that. And i am not even a professional trainer, just a retired k9 military squad guy. I used to do rehabilitate for shelter dogs for free, until the purely positive idiots took over. They marked me as a neanderthalic stone age guy, and now they ruin dogs left and right of the way. It's a shame, really.

This is exactly what they do. They TALK or proclaim their views are SCIENCE. Lies. One thing about the scientific method is that it is a PROCESS that requires testing and replication. These PP trainers never show themselves working with the difficult red zone dogs. They will TALK about it a lot, or degrade other people who ARE working with these dogs, but they won't demonstrate themselves working with and resolving these issues with dogs. I know, I've directly challenged Zak George and he even responded to me. He couldn't produce an example to counter me. These PP trainers have been challenged to demonstrate their effectiveness against quality "balanced" trainers, but they always refuse and make excuses. They're liars and this is their radical religion.

Just had a discussion under a video postet. There was a young Malinois in a local German shelter. It wasn't much known about his past, the only thing that was known was, that he was around a year old and hadn't get to know anything within that time. No training, no socialization. And he was quite difficult to handle for the shelter staff. And then came along a young guy saying: "I am no trainer but I have a lot of experience with GSD's and Malis. I grew up with them, I do competition with some of them, I know and own a rocket of a GSD now and I would very much like to help that beautiful young dog to get adopted faster." The shelter was really happy about that and let him work with the dog and he postet the first video showing, how they visibly grew a relationship within three days and working on very basic things together. And instead of praising and thanking him that he dedicated time and energy completely for free to help that difficult dog it didn't take long for people to criticize that for example he put a hand on the dogs backside to guide him to sit. Ot that he lead it into sitting by pulling the leash up and even using a collar, not a harness. It was just a shame. Fortunately a lot of people quickly came forward to shut them up. There's no use to try to discuss with those people. It's just waisted time and energy. The standard answer for the for me now is. Go there, do it better, and show us all how it's done on video. End of discussion!" They never come through. Never!

There are quite a few equally quackpot social media platforms doing similar. The loony tunes won't give up and they are dangerous if given half a legal chance. In Australia we have fb groups who demand fully FF discussions - even using the word corrections 'no' and 'ahuh' is an instant banning offence and all replies to questions must be by a 'group expert' and the usual advice is to engage a certified behaviouralist. The real sad part of these dogs suffering, is it's not just shelter dogs. People like me, and countless others, who give their dogs a loving home, structure, exercise and willingness to teach our dogs how to overcome struggles, OUR dogs, in a sense, are suffering too. Maybe not so much as shelter dogs, obviously. But if our dogs are struggling with fear or reactivity or severe aggression, I'm here to back you on the reality there slim to none trainers who are willing to correct a dog in the moment. Ive spent maybe $4,000 on 2 different organizations, and 5 different trainers, and NOBODY will properly correct a dog in the given scenario you are struggling with. It got to a point where I took matters into my own hands, and I would just rely on your videos, and several others with similar methods, and we've gotten worlds better, and have overcome the majority of his struggles. But what scared me the most, is although I appreciate the videos, when you don't have someone there to monitor your corrections, if you correct that dog wrong even just a little, it could make the issue so much worse. So these dogs are "suffering" too because no "professional" will help them that's not over $20,000, and us owners at home are terrified of doing something wrong. It puts a lot of us in a position where we don't know what to do anymore, because the only thing we're doing wrong is nobody around us will properly correct them, or we're too broke to afford it. It's so unfair to us and our dogs. My situation, our dog was really not as bad as I thought and he's become such a rockstar and I'm very proud of him. We got very lucky. But what about other people? It's sad. I knew there were culture wars and pro this and anti that, but I had no idea this was happening in the dog training community. It really does seem like radicals are just tearing down everything around us that we've worked so hard to build. Thanks for being a voice.

Great video! 👍🏻 While I don't entirely agree with your "when men were men" comment, I can still respectfully disagree. And you clearly aren't a bad person since all you want to do is HELP dogs and save their lives so I hold you in the highest respect for that. Anyone who thinks that your abusing dogs clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. Also: when I get a puppy in the future, I'm going to use your training methods 😁

@kelsey hexberg As a dog walker myself and without witnessing your situation first hand, what i would do is... a muzzle or a solo crate/seat riding shotgun. Breed could play a part, sometimes shepherd type breeds can get a bit snappy when they're stimulated at things move quick in front of them. Also worth noting is the energy levels of dogs entering vehicle, maybe she's correcting as she feels they're too much for the journey... Unless you have the time on the spot to train her, which is tough in the moment, i'd go with the solo spot in the vehicle, or a muzzle if u cant make a solo spot. If you're genuinely concerned about damage getting done to another dog then defo muzzle, worth considering whether she does it to a dog and whether it'll turn in to a fight at some point in the future. I have a decked out van so can cater to all dogs and their quirks. worth making sure she's not sore somewhere too... maybe she's started doing it as a way to create space to keep any boisterous dogs jumping right up into her face/hips/sore bits etc... maybe also she just doesn't like some of the dogs that you're bringing in and you cant tell? Maybe the novelties wore off an she's like meh i dont like these guys and is just being a grump about it.
@gmathieson71845 ай бұрын
its very important to know who can go where in the vehicle and why so maybe something to think about too :) one of my best collies will snap/growl/bite and probably cause a fight in a shared spot in the side. yet when everyone's out on the walk she's the absolute best dog, not a bother with anyone. some dogs are just weirdos lol.

A bit upset are we? Hahaha Love the video and I wish that we could get better education to dog owners. I think some of the stuff these quacks publish is completely irresponsible, putting dogs and humans at risk. Appalling. I always had German Shepherds from pups, and then a few years ago I had my first rescue. Had some significant challenges that I didn't know how to overcome. So I got a Delta trainer, not knowing much about Delta training at that time. Needless to say, six months in, no results. At the same time I was following you, Michael Ellis and alike. Something you did struck a cord with me so I tried it, and presto, in a few sessions the issue was under control. When I told the trainer what I did, by Robert Cabral, she told me that she could no longer work with me as a client as we don't allign in our approach. WOW My / your approach achieved results, hers didn't, I guess was the main issue. Hahahaha Some other trainers ("Balanced Trainers", "Alpha Trainers", "Self called Behaviourists", etc.), where just as bad, just in the opposite direction or simply not having the answer as to why it is what we do in training, how do dogs learn, how do we achieve optimal outcomes, for long term memory, etc. I got so frustrated at that point that I decided to study applied canine behaviour and learning myself, and you were one of a few who inspired me to do that, whilst working 65hrs a week in a full time job. The best thing I have ever done. Now it's about educating others that purely positive cannot achieve optimal results for all dogs (if any) and all types of challenges, behaviour issues, etc. It's impossible. Can't see you retiring any time soon, you are way to passionate about dogs. Hahaha All the very best 👍

I was looking for a video describing how a clicker can replace treats. I'm sure that's what the original Karen Pryor method said.. you condition the dog so that the clicker sound gives a happy anticipation feeling and you only need to give a small treat after many clicks. Makes sense to me,but I lost the book 15 years ago and can't find anything on KZbin. Totally agree with everything you said tho

I think with my aggressive little girl positive works well now that I let her know she just couldn’t attack dogs. I was so afraid she’d be killed or hurt a small dog. But first I had to let her know I wasn’t going to allow her to just do whatever she wanted. Because she definitely would.

WHAT????!!!!! They banned crates in Europe???!!! That's asinine! Pack'n' plays keep babies SAFE, crates keep puppies SAFE, and when done right, the crate becomes the dog's happy place/comfy den in which they can go into and out of as they please. Raising a puppy without a crate to utilize before they learn proper manners and boundaries is a nightmare. 🤦🏼♀

Hard to watch all those great dogs alone and unloved. I’m wondering what this shelter video has to do with PP training. I love your whole way of training, btw, I just can’t see all those pits in so much agony.

It seems there are always people who take an idea too far. As with all things, moderation is key I believe. All collars, leashes, harnesses, any equipment can be used for effective training or abuse. Totally depends on the handler. Purely bpositive training is unrealistic when your dog encounters stimuli that is more rewarding than that piece of meat (chasing a squirrel etc). There are instances when different collars mean controlling your dog to being dragged behind a leash. As a 5 ft older woman with a 65 lb GSD, there have been times when a harness would have been a stupid choice for me to rely on.

Shelters are full of bully breeds and mixes. Here in West Texas just last week, they put down 20 dog's. They try to post them a week or more in advance and put up pictures. It's so sad, people are abandoning them. I've got a puppy from a litter that was left outside in a crate in the rain. She's beautiful but already a handful. Red Heeler/Red nose Pit. I found out who abandoned them. Turned them in too. Edit:Yeah, I was tooting my own horn. But I do like your videos and your advice. I'm trying, I have had pits in the past. Not my first but likely my last. I didn't really intend to get another dog.

I subscribed to your channel not too long ago because I saw you in one of the videos of Nate Schoemer. I wish I could have my training with you, Mr. Cabral. I’m not a trainer, but I have a facility with dogs. With my own knowledge and some books, years ago, I, by myself trained my German Shepherd and he was sharp as a knife. We could communicate just by looking at each other. I also wish I could work with shelters to save dogs . To tell you the truth when you put up that video with the dogs in the shelter I didn’t look at the screen at all. I couldn’t stand it because I feel so guilty. When I see dogs in shelters like that, and I know I cannot help them, it breaks my heart! I tried once with a rescued jack Russell and I failed. But still, I kept him until he died. Is there a way that I could have my training with you?

I know EXACTLY who you are talking about. I have a Bull Mastiff cross. I use a choke chain with a lead. Today we were fine until another Pitbull on lead approached. It took a lot of strength and manipulation to control the situation. She is 2 and a bit years old with minimal training. I get it.. I've had her for 8 months. A lack of training is the problem and now I'm trying to make up for that. We can't have prong leads in Australia - they aren't legal. But she is very powerful, and without the choke chain, I'm not sure if I could control her when she want to take a b-line to the other dog.

Slip lead. Slide snap and release to off-balance the dog, with "NO" first, after they know the routine that's expected.
@hippiebits20715 ай бұрын
You may want to check out the Leerberg Dominant Dog Collar (it’s not anything that I would imagine would be prohibited). It’s basically a slip lead designed to stay in place to allow of optimal timing of the correction and better control. Unsure if Robert sells anything similar you may want to check if he offers anything as well. To be honest if your dog is AT ALL dog aggressive it should remain under your direct physical control in public for life. If that means a training aid for life so be it. There is no shame in being proactive, safe and responsible and THAT is the type of management that leaves a good impression.

Prong collars(and e'collars) are only illegal to use on dogs in a couple of states in Australia, not illegal across the country. There are laws about importing them, only licenced people can import them, but you can buy from people licensed to import. From memory it's only Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania where it is illegal to use a prong on a dog.

I am going off the tangent here, but some dog trainers sell themselves to the dog owners with reputation from dolphin training, or learning from dolphin, seal, Penguin trainers... Do they and the people realize that they confine those animals, controlling the environment to the extend that those animals only amusement is the food and interaction with trainers!!! Those animals with instinct to not care about strange people/the spectators in the first place unlike dogs!!! I don't see them can train random wild animals out in open sea!!! So much for positive only without truly explaining the controlled environmental factor

Can you tell me how I get him to not be aggressive with my neighbors? He’s a protective dog and that’s great but he constantly wants to bark and even snap at them and I’ve let my neighbors give him treats and I’ve tried to correct his behavior by saying “No “ but he keeps doing it .. any help would be appreciated…

I live in Germany where positive only is the norm. Tools are banned and they are considered abuse which is widely spread propaganda. You get a dog and basically first thing you learn is that corrections are bad, tools are so abusive that people don't even want to talk about it. Of course I tried this training style when I got my first dog, an akita inu female. I didnt even know there is other training out there than positive only. It pretty quickly got to a point where it got dangerous. Every time we encountered a dog my own dog bit me. Not only small bites, she bit so hard it started bleeding. She never listened, not even when there were no distractions. She was not toy or food motivated at all. I went to different trainers and some of them just ghosted me, some tried some things like "you just need better treats! Make yourself exciting!..." of course non of that worked. I was at a point where I was about to give my dog away but then these foreign training videos showed up on my yt page and I watched. At first I hated it because they use these bad abusive tools but I watched more and more and thought "hmm these dogs seem super happy and not abused." And the Trainer seemed super knowledgeable about dogs and they showed results. Almost no German trainer shows their results, especially when it's about extremely difficult dogs. (Because they can't handle them). I spent weeks researching stuff and learning about this training and well, today, 5 years later I own two akitas which I can take everywhere. Even offleash in super crowded places. They always listen and love to work with me. ❤ (Of course there are wonderful trainers in Germany, but 99% are really bad)

The idea that correction creates fear is such a hoax. The people who say that are just trying to make dog owners fearful and thus unable to delineate clear boundaries. What really makes a fearful dog are the same things that make a fearful child: isolation, lack of structure, and no one clearly in charge.
@xitaris59815 ай бұрын
Too many novice dog owners think corrections are punishments rather than communication. The sad part is when they think that and are still willing to give "corrections" - they end up taking their frustrations out on the dog and give people "evidence" that corrections don't work. Unfortunately, those dogs that have owners that give improper corrections do become fearful - for good reason. I see this a decent amount.

Once again your video popped in my feed because it was reviewed or critiqued. The guy’s point was that dogs are in shelters due to dog trainers is so wrong and a good indicator that person is just lying. It’s money. It’s always been money. Dogs tearing property is expensive. Dog vet costs area serious issue now as everything has inflated. Regardless of training methodology misrepresentation of the real issue prevents solving it. What that guy did was knowingly misrepresenting a problem to gain KZbin cred. It makes one think what would he do to your dog to make him look better.
