One could say that What's Wrong With New York? is, in fact, nothing but Harrison Patrick Smith bouncing between trying to make sentimental music for the lives of drug-fueled clubbers and embracing that same culture without a hint of irony and a truckload of audacity. Unfortunately, the final result is something that feels like neither. At the moment, The Dare is a project that is somewhere between attempting to be offensive and attempting to be earnest. There are brief moments here that slightly highlight what it could mean for either of those directions to be more fully attached to What's Wrong With New York?, but Smith never sticks with either long enough to see those ideas blossom beyond their most basic form. Then again, with a record plagued by spins on sounds that have been popular within alternative music for a number of decades at this point, vocal work that unashamedly rips off a superior band, and songwriting that lacks any true identity, there may have been no hope for this record to begin with. I do still have the slightest bit of faith that Smith could turn The Dare around and turn this into a fairly interesting project that actually has something to say. As it stands, however, What's Wrong With New York? is not that turning point.
