"It even came to a time when settlers were forces to eat trea bark" That was standard for many poor in Scandinavia during these times.

I also just found out that the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm has a collection of bread made from tree bark. Thanks for the info!

@@SirManateee Yeah it is important to remember that Scandinavia (Especially Sweden) was a super poor country. It was not until the 1860s when the Industrial Revolution appeared that shot the Swedish economy up into the stratosphere. Yes the Swedish Empire was big but it also had about the same number of people as some cities. Still the case; 10 million people in Sweden, about the same as London.

@Mike Fluff I wouldnt really call the Empire big, neither.

Not entirely untrue though is it? Look at Thatcher's policies which objectively harmed the prosperity and health of British people, but Scottish people in particular

I often compare Poland-Lithuania to Great Britain as well as the United States, especially when thinking about King Pontaniowskis reforms, do you have an opinion on this?

Good piece but there are a couple of points you need to check out. In 1706 England was in its worst recession (until Covid) and was functionally bankrupt thanks to the War of Spanish Succession. It was also scared Scotland would side with France and or Spain so needed to protect its northern border. As for the negotiations neither parliament appointed commissioners. For Scotland only Queen Anne (thanks to the Prerogative Act 1661) could enter into treaty negotiations and approve the terms. She stacked the Scottish side with 30 commissioners for the union and a token one against it. The Queen approved the terms of the treaty ( in her separate roles of Queen of Scots and Queen of England) in July 1706 at major event attended by foreign diplomats. She then instructed her parliaments to put the terms in to domestic law. The compensation under article 15 was paid to "Scotland" as it took on a share of Englands £20m public debt (Scotland didn't have any as it didn't have a central bank like England). This debt is equivalent to £640,000,000,000 today. You neglect to mention that the vote on the 16th of January 1707 was held under the threat of English invasion and its representatives with the blessing of the queen partook in massive bribery of swaying Scottish parliamentarians. Check out Random Scottish History for more sources that show the union was not equal and England continued to exert dominance over Scotland despite the union being equal (excluding parliamentary representation).

You’ve always been a nest of parasites and traitors, hold the Scottish Independence vote in England, you’d have it hands down and comfortably return to bankruptcy 🤔🤭

Absolutely brilliant. Well balanced production which gives the pros and cons from each side. The Union turned out to be the most powerful Union the world has ever seen. Has modern day Scotland ever atoned for its attempt to colonise Darien? No, it has swept it under the carpet while belly-aching about Westminster oppression.

To be fair, what is there to atone for? The colony didn't stick around long enough to trouble the natives. Scots did much more to affect the word, for good or ill, when working in concert with the English!

When you talk about atonig for sins, the uni i study at has a plaque in the main college literally dedicated to talking about its colonial past and the slavery money used to build it. They also literally achieved a treaty with the native people of mutual assistance. Maybe respecting your partners is something Westminster could learn from.

They signed a treaty of mutual assistance and didn't really do anything bad to the natives the opposite seems to be true for the short time they where there.

Scotland did not attempt to colonise Darien as other European countries were doing. It bought land from the Cuna tribe and fought to defend them from the Spanish. Check out Billy Kays book the Scottish World for more info. This does not mean the Scots wouldn't have followed the example of its neighbours if the scheme had been successful.

damn so in short the scotts and english needed a dutch king to help them unite after some disasterous attempt at colonisation by scotland?
@jamiesedinburgh
@jamiesedinburgh Жыл бұрын
Nope. That Dutch king despite being King of Scots actively worked against Scottish interests by banning colonial trade with the colony and instructing the colonies to refuse aid if asked
