@@dosomestuff1949 People shouldn't be told the truth just because it's the truth. The truth itself can have devastating consequences on people - in this case, the Gothamites' hope and belief in lawful justice through Harvey Dent. All of the work that Batman did to instill hope within Gotham (hope that is maintained now only through Harvey, which Batman wanted because Harvey is the exemplary citizen who made Gotham better without being a vigilante like Batman) would be destroyed if Gotham learned the truth about Dent. Dent would no longer be the exemplary citizen everyone praised him to be, and Gotham wouldn't have a perfect, clean role model to look up to; thus, the faith of Gotham in Dent and his example would not be rewarded by the truth but rather punished by it. So, Batman knows that Gotham deserve to have their faith rewarded.

Everyone talks about Ledger's and Bails performance in the trilogy, but Gary Oldman's performance is so criminally underrated, it's insane. His reactions to Batman's heroism add a whole new dimension to the ending. The look on his face when Batman says "Call it In" at 1:56 says it all. Heartbreaking defeat and profound revelation in one facial expression.

Oh, he's getting his recognition alright. Critics always talking about how he makes "virtue exciting". That is some kind of compliment, and it is so drastically deserved. Oldman is a chameleon: Sirius Black in Harry Potter P.O.A., Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols movie), Bram's Dracula, Harvey Lee Oswald in JFK, the eccentric villain in The Fifth Element, and my personal favorite besides him as Gordon, the villain in The Professional (hailed as one of the greatest villains in cinema history btw). I honestly think the only reason he's underrated is quite simply bc he's overlooked. Not by his performances, but by his face... I mean he's so good at becoming his characters I never recognized him from any of those other movies when he played Gordon. One of the greats, for sure.

@c0nman753
@c0nman753 6 жыл бұрын
The ending is about him sacrificing his reputation and possibly his own life for the sake of the greater good. If Gotham knew about what Harvey Dent became then all of the things he did would be torn down and viewed as corrupt. Comparing a superhero who specifically goes out of his way to never kill anyone to a serial killer who gleefully enjoys murdering people just shows that you have no idea what you are talking about. The only thing that Batman does that could be considered immoral is being a vigilante who takes justice into his own hands. However, we know that if Batman wasn't around then Gotham would be destroyed and everyone would be dead, either from the League of Shadows, the Joker, Scarecrow, or Bane.

But if they didn't tell him all they did and they kept Dent as this heroic figure which they went through with anyways this means that millions of people are putting their faiths in one big lie which means The Joker wins So the thing is This situation was an unwinnable since Joker created a scenario where Batman couldn't win. @@divine1196 i thought for a long time in your same logic that the joker won either way but looking back now that i have matured more i understand he might have partially won but remember dent wasnt the best just bcoz he was the white knight , the best knowingly and unknowingly was always batman , yeah the joker did break him too , but is it so? In the end batman could still muster up enough courage to do the right thing and thats why when the truth finally came out in the dark knight rises though there was initial chaos all around ppl could understand and appreciate his sacrifice in the end and isnt that what matters. Joker did break and beat harvey and did partially break and beat batman too but the joker's primary point was eliminating hope which at the end he was unsuccessful of , the biggest example for that movie? infact its the best scene of the movie where he gives option to blow either one of them off or else he will blow both of them it was a mental exercise to bring out the best of us and worst of us , best in the convicts and the worst in the normal ppl still at the end they managed to do the right thing and what inspired them to do so? hope , the same hope which batman believed that would have been gone with dent but did it so? batman himself unknowingly provided the hope by putting up a selfless fight

This is what happens when a director respects his source material, focuses more on substance over style, creates characters that we care about and can relate to, relies more on practical effects than CGI but uses CGI to enhance the practical effects, chooses to create a holistic well-rounded film with all loose ends tied rather than leaving them completely open to spinoff multiple franchises, and has minimal intrusion from the production studios trying to interfere with the director's vision... ...oh how I miss the Nolan era of superhero movies.

Dude, WATCHMEN OKAY, YOU WANT A MOVIE WHICH RESPECT THE ORIGINAL STORY??, it was as good as Alan Moore's comic (zack I love you but please, no more DC spinoff preparation and botched job )

But unlike the elected officials of Gotham who had allowed the city to fall into ruin, Batman was ready to become so much more. Whenever Batman says "I'm whatever Gotham needs me to be", I'm always reduced to tears. Sums up Nolan's Batman so perfectly. If Gotham needs a heroic figure to look up to for hope and inspiration, Batman will be there. If they need someone to blame for everything that's gone wrong then then again Batman will be there and he'll take the hate if that's what it takes to stop the city from falling apart. Nowadays in movies, heroes are always seen as those perfect figures who save cities and worlds from the bad guy. This film is soo different. Batman's a flawed character and he knows that. But he's more than a hero. He's someone who'll do anything (heroic or unheroic) to protect his city. He's a Dark Knight.

I like both Marvel and DC, but I laugh at people who say DC make no good movies and Marvel's are better. This scene alone is better written, acted and generally better than anything the Marvel movies have ever had. Perhaps DC make less, and they've had a few misses, but the quality of this is just...incredible. Quality over quantity.

bob bill And because it's a comic movie, it can't be one of the greatest films ever made? You'll notice a great big slap bang "Based on the characters by DC Comics" in the credits, I suggest you look at it. And of course DC had stuff to do with this. That's like saying Marvel had nothing to do with Avengers and it was all Whedon and Disney.

Darth TARDIS. Putting this film in the same category as the Avengers or even the other movies in its own trilogy is a sin. There's absolutely no competition with other comic book movies, and when nothing else even comes close, it should be moved to a league of its own.

Intranetusa Meh, I disagree there. You'd need the same scriptwriter too, who not nearly enough credit is given too. Then the sheer caliber of the cast. Then the soundtrack. And even then, and this isn't a criticism, just a fact- Marvel makes movies for younger audiences and are deliberately less sophisticated, and less dark. That's why I doubt Nolan would go near one.

Well think about it in this sense. There's only a handful of trilogies where all 3 of the films are at least "good". Despite Rises being the weakest of the trilogy (I realize its not the best filmmaking-wise, but its my personal favorite) Nolan did an excellent job at telling this character's story.
@windowsVD

I think Rises is better than Begins filmmaking wise. Begins had some pretty clunky dialogue and horribly filmed fight scenes with awful shaky cam and quick cuts.

Thomas Jiang But the only great scenes in TDKR are the first Bane-Batman fight and the Rise out of the pit. Batman Begins has the training with Ra's Al Ghul, the re-discovery of the Batcave, the first Tumbler chase, the "I'm Batman" moment ...
@windowsVD
@windowsVD 8 жыл бұрын
WhateverReally I disagree, Rises has loads of great scenes aside from the 2 that you mentioned. The opening plane hijack sequence, Bane's takeover, Bane's speech in the pit, Bane's the speech at Blackgate prison, All Out War(cops vs. Bane's militia), Final chase scene, Batman's sacrifice, the ending...etc. Batman Begins only has about 5 notably great scenes for me in total. The flashback sequences, Bruce's training with Ras, Batman's first encounter with Scarecrow, the Tumbler chase scene, Alfred rescuing Bruce from the burning mansion. The discovery of the batcave was cool, but having bats fly around and circle around him for...reasons, was odd, and conflicts with the tone of the movie and the rest of the trilogy as it felt overly comic booky. Also the "I'm Batman" moment would have better if it didn't follow that horribly edited excuse of a fight scene.

The truly disturbing thing about The Dark Knight is that it elevates a lie into a general social principle: the principle of organization of our social, political life, as if our societies can remain stable, can function, only if based on a lie, as if the truth - and this telling the truth is embodied in Joker - means destruction.
@ajdominguez1002
@ajdominguez1002 2 жыл бұрын
And that's what makes this movie masterpiece: it's the constant struggle of these two principles
@SirMattomaton
@SirMattomaton 6 ай бұрын
It's not elevating a lie. It's about a heroic self sacrifice for the betterment of many. Because the "truth" alone would bring far more harm than good. There are several other great examples of exactly this sentiment. We see this in One Punch Man, during the "Deep Sea King" arc. Saitama, even though he won the day (easily) he took on the ire of public opinion to protect the integrity of the Hero Association as a whole, when it was being jeopardized by one loud mouthed a*shole. If you have not seen that show... Go watch it! It's so good and it gets better and better with every episode. Another example in culture is the story of Jesus Christ and the cross. He took on the punishment of sin, which is death. Although He alone never sinned or did either evil. His sacrifice made it possible so everyone else can find salvation and a TANGIBLE connection to God through the Holy Spirit.
@Joshua-yf1yi
@Joshua-yf1yi 3 ай бұрын
This is exactly why I didn’t like the ending of this movie. Although I was told with the original third movie was supposed to be like before the person who played the Joker killed himself. It would’ve been a great trilogy if they had was intended.
@samarboria
@samarboria Ай бұрын
And that lie is why I love the ending. Because the standards, principles and society we build for ourselves may be a "lie", but where would the joker's "truth" lead us? Guaranteed: not off this planet. Not in time. The Joker's "Truth" only exists because it's pitted against a system characterized as a "lie" - a lie because...? Because why exactly? Because people don't always meet the standard of their principles? Because it can fail? The Joker's "Truth" is the lie, because the Joker, for one, failed and two has no further principle than destruction of systems that, ultimately, brings out a more true "us". Your comment was ok... but I don't necessarily think the nature of truth was what Nolan had in mind with this ending.

+cabuscus Perhaps it was a normal movie at the time it came out... but I begun to appreciate Begins a lot more after seeing Nolan's filmography, as it has grown, since then. With not much effort, after repeated viewings, I could see the depth of what Nolan was trying to accomplish for the character, in a way we hadn't seen it before. And don't forget he had to do it a lot more subtle, for the people who were just in the "comic-book" fanbase. I think his success with that first movie and others (like The Prestige) let him enter a lot more of his personal vision in the sequels.
