In this first time watching reaction video I will be watching The Dark Knight! The Dark Knight is a film directed by Christopher Nolan and takes place after the events of Batman Begins. Chaos unfolds as the Joker (Heath Ledger) works to bring District Attorney Harvey Dent to his level. Commissioner Gordon and Batman must work together to save Gotham.

WAIT!! BEFORE YOU COMMENT!! Have you come here to tell me that it's obvious Rachel and Bruce are not a couple?! You're right, I only remembered the kiss and forgot how Rachel ended things! Thank you to everyone who reminded me about that! Although, I still would like to point out that their current relationship at the start of this film seems much more estranged than I would have imagined at the end of Batman Begins! Anyways, thanks for pointing it out!! =) I hope you enjoy the rest of the reaction!

I think that Nolan wants us to speculate about what's been going on between the movies. Rachel seems already annoyed by Bruce crashing her & Harvey's dinner. You'd have to imagine he does that kind of thing all the time, by the seemingly sarcastic way she says "imagine that!" As though he's been watching her like a hawk this entire time. Alfred certainly seems skeptical of his motivations behind monitoring her and Harvey.

Also, not sure if it was mentioned anywhere else, but you were asking if it was possible for that SkyHook thing in Hong Kong. Nolan made sure everything was practical in the Trilogy. The suit, weapons, vehicles, everything. He wanted everything to be possible in the real world, and not just comic book based

@@macrotus8586 yeah it was, there's no space for improvisation in a one-shot scene. The scene was totally scripted. They rehearsed the scene a dozen times before shooting it, to make sure they had a good first shot. They certainly couldn't rebuild a factory and blow it up again (well to be honest in Inception they did, they built the building on the mountains that explode at the end, for real, 1:1 scale, they blew it up, but Nolan didn't like the explosion, so they built a giganture of the building and blew it up, and then another one). Ledger was so good, his reaction was so true, that it seemed like he wasn't expecting that delay.

Love the reasoning behind why Joker switched addresses. He knew that if he killed Rachel, one of them would lose their mind. This goes back to Joker’s point from “The Killing Joke.” All it takes is one bad day to turn the best of us into him. Also, when you said “It didn’t fully work out at the end.” I disagree. Christopher Nolan had balls to write the first ever comic book film (that I can remember) where the bad guy won. He won the moment Harvey lost his mind and Joker successfully turned Dent into him. And now they publicly have to live a lie to hide it.
@LiteWeightReacting

Love that quote from the killing joke! And when I said didn’t fully work out, I meant it didn’t fully work out for the good guys, which it didn’t! I think that’s true! I’m a fan of the way it ended, personally!

@glennwelsh9784 3 ай бұрын
There are other moments in the movie that pay homage to The Killing Joke. Though the dialogue is different, the interrogation room is definitely inspired by it. And Joker's multiple versions of his own origin story is also similar to how Joker says in The Killing Joke how even he doesn't quite recall the truth of how he became this way, and finishes with "If I had an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
@PhilRiveraMedia
@PhilRiveraMedia 3 ай бұрын
I read it differently. He switched the addresses as a test. Joker new Batman had some personal relationship with Rachel. If Batman made the selfless choice, to save Dent, then he would have ended up saving Rachel and thus be rewarded for choosing what was best for the city. But, by choosing Rachel and acting for himself, he failed the test and ended up losing them both. Part of the Joker's reasoning in this movie is that people are selfish and will do whatever is in their best interests, even if it means others will die. In that moment, that's what Batman did. That's just how I interpret it anyway. I don't know if Nolan has commented on this, but I think it fits pretty well.

@@LiteWeightReacting The problem is that a lot of the "technology" that Nolan included DOES NOT WORK. - the stupid microwave generator would vaporise the water in every human's cells too and it would not vaporise water that is underground in pipes - in Batman Begins the cable with which Batman hangs from the monorail "phases" through the pillars of the monorail - the "sonar cell phones" doesnt work, because the sound generators in the phones are probably not capable of generating / detecting those wavelengths - Batman catching up to Rachel falling from the skyscraper doesnt work, because he has more drag than she (the clothes) and gravity is "equal acceleration regardless of mass"; only air-drag could make a difference The problem is that you COULD create BELIEVEABLE TECHNOLOGY that "might work", but Nolan / his writers are LAZY and ACTIVELY HATE TECHNOLOGY & PHYSICS. Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel) never saw Heath Ledger in his Joker make up until they filmed that scene in Wayne's penthouse. Her looking terrified and flinching from Ledger wasn't acting, she said that she was truly afraid of him. The prosthetics that made up Heath Ledger's Joker scars were anchored to his lower lip. But the glue kept dissolving and they were spending a lot of time reapplying the glue. So Ledger found out that if he licked his lower lip, it kept the prosthetic on his lip for twice as long. So he integrated licking his lip into the character like a nervous tic. Both the Batmobile and the Batpod, which is what they named the motorcycle are real, functional vehicles they built from scratch.

Great reaction like always, this movie is so good. Ledger absolutely OWNED that role. He was incredibly unhinged. Seeing this in theaters was so amazing. One of the best films ever. It just is unrelenting. Heath Ledger asked to direct and film the fake Batman hostage video. He improvised the entire dialog. During the Batman/Joker interagation Heath told Christian Bale to actually hit him. And most importantly, it is rumored that when the hospital explosion didn't go off, viewers thought Heath ad-libbed the whole scene. Not true, every second of that explosion was crafted by experts, who would have gotten Ledger out of there the moment anything was going wrong. The pause was planned, and maybe Heath adlibbed some of the confusion/excitement, but it was all scripted tech wise. Christopher Nolan and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould already explain it many times. And another fun-fact about that mid-movie scene with the Joker crashing the party: that was the first time Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Caine saw Heath in his makep. The makeup, combined with his unhinged behavior, elicited truly panicked reactions. Go back and watch Maggie... she is kegitimately freaked out and not acting. And in the hospital scene between Harvey and Joker Because he's a master manipulator. He knew that there was a 50/50 chance that Dent would pull the trigger especially in his current mental state. He wanted to mess with him. The joker may not care much about his life but he wouldn't want Harvey to be the one to kill him. He wanted batman to have that honour. This is the brilliance of the Joker. The illusion of choice. He gives Dent the option to him right then and there, to end the madness or join it´s ranks. The choice is simple, because there isn´t one. If you look closely at the Joker´s finger he is holding the gun hammer, even if dent pulled the trigger, the hammer wouldn´t fall. Keep up the good work.

37:53 That reaction from Heath was genuine, because he was supposed to simply walk away and escape on the bus. But the explosives momentarily failed, so Heath decided to improvise the reaction of the arms flying up and fiddling with the detonator. His performance is nothing short of a once in a lifetime masterpiece.

17:08 I remember seeing the movie in the theater, and as there always is, there were a couple of people whispering in the seats behind me. I was about to turn around and tell them to please be quiet when the Joker did that line. You could have heard a mouse farting on the space station with how quiet that theater immediately became. Up to that point we'd only seen the sociopathic and strange side of the Joker, but that was the first time his PRESENCE was felt, and hoooooly shit, it actually felt like the theater had cooled down by about 5 C. One of the few times a movie has given me actual chills down my spine, which speaks to the absolute masterclass that Ledger put on in the movie.

37:56 Heath Ledger jumped because this was a one-time-only possible shot, as they didn't have another building to blow up. So, if he tripped and fell, or sneezed, or even dropped out of character, they had to keep the shot. Also, the delay was planned to give enough time for him to board the bus and for it to pull out of shot. So, when the explosions stopped, that was PLANNED, but in that improvisational mind of his, he decided it would be perfectly within the Joker's mannerisms to fiddle with the remote, so when the explosion did happen, it actually DID make him jump, and then he continued the scripted shot. There are a ton of improv moments by Ledger throughout the whole film that just made it the best Joker depiction ever. His constantly licking his lips, for example, is actually a warm-up technique he used to get into character, and he just decided to keep it in the actual shots as a tic that the Joker does. As well, when Batman is punching him in the interrogation room during the "Where are they?!?" part, after a few takes Ledger just wasn't feeling it, so he asked Christian Bale to *actually* punch him. Two good right hooks and then the most maniacal laugh came from Ledger because by actually being hit, albeit not hard, he was able to tap into the Joker's mindset and drag it out.

One thing I really appreciate in this movie that I don't see discussed often is the relationship between Bruce and Harvey. They both have feelings for the same woman, yet it doesn't devolve into an angsty love triangle or a jealous pissing contest. Bruce respects Rachel's decision to not be with him, and he recognizes Harvey as a good man. Harvey, likewise, doesn't wear his insecurities about Bruce's status on his sleeve and doesn't get possessive over Rachel. That's such a mature depiction of male rivalry without any toxic macho bullshit.
