The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed, co-produced, and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the second installment of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale and supported by Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. In the film, Bruce Wayne / Batman (Bale), Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City, but are menaced by an anarchistic mastermind known as the Joker (Ledger), who seeks to undermine Batman's influence and throw the city into chaos.

Joker keeps giving himself different backstories for "how he got his scars"? A very infamous comic book line by the Joker, "If I'm going to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice. It's such a crucial part of the Joker's character. He always wants you guessing.

Yes that is exactly what's wrong with people sympathizing with joaquin phoenix's joker, because the movie was all how he told his story; how he perceived his past. Maybe he was lying, maybe he wasn't the victim of society at all and just a plain lunatic. For all we know joker's father in 'The Dark Knight' could've been a good virtuous man who just didn't believe in his son's radical ideologies.

It is highly symbolic that Harvey falls to his death. This is a physical representation of his ethical fall from grace. Also, in the earlier scene when he is interrogating the schizophrenic patient (which is the scene in where his character begins to turn) half of his face is blacked out, foreshadowing the spiritual birth of two face as a character. Nolan is a genius with these movies. Every fine detail has a greater symbolic meaning, which is what makes the dark knight one of the greatest movies of all time.

I remember seeing this opening weekend in 2008 when I was 12 years old and I was BLOWN TF AWAY by Heath Ledger. I'll never forget during the scene where the footage of him demanding Batman take off his mask, when he screamed "LOOK AT ME!!", you could hear a pin drop in the theater. No one said a WORD. No one ate popcorn, reached for their drink, checked their phone, talked to their friend, NOTNING. Just pure SILENCE. When he said that, this teenage kid sitting next to me and I just silently looked at each other wide eyed for a split second w/o saying anything and just looked back at the screen. It was as if we KNEW we were witnessing one of the greatest performances of all time. To date, probably my most memorable moment in a movie theater.

I like that Rachel chose Harvey over Bruce. A common theme in Batman media is how he's too committed to *being* Batman. He may date, he may even have relationships, but everything comes second to "the mission", whether he's even aware of that reality or not. Rachel knew it, and she had more respect for herself than to be second to Bruce's obsession. She loved both of them, but in the end, she chose the one who loved her back. It was the right choice.

@@fatty1040 Okay, I don't think you know what "gaslight" means. It's not "gaslighting" someone to remind them of the difference between right and wrong, between vengeance and justice, between personal pain and moral responsibility. The only person who was gaslit in this whole triangle was Harvey, by the Joker, into thinking that Jim Gordon and Batman were responsible for Rachel's death instead of the Joker. Rachel didn't trick anyone into doing or thinking anything (unless you count hiding Bruce's secret identity).

@@fatty1040 That's not at all what she was saying. It was a birthday gift, showing him that she'd kept it all these years even while he was missing and presumed dead because that's how important he is to her. Just because she was disappointed in him didn't mean she'd stopped caring about him, because that's what friends do. You want to call her slapping him some kind of abuse, go right ahead, but she was 100% right to tell him his father would be ashamed of him for trying to murder someone. Friends tell each other what they need to hear, even if it's harsh. She didn't make any demands of him except that he look beyond his own pain and realize that the person he wanted to "thank" for killing Joe Chill was the same person who created Joe Chill in the first place. Bruce was being an idiot, and Rachel set him straight.

I'm not certain if it's overlooked or that no one "shows" a reaction to it but the Joker having different "scar" origins isn't JUST different for its own sake. Each time he tells the story it has direct influence from WHOM he's telling it to. He tells Gamble about an abusive father; probably something Gamble can relate to. Joker's guessing of course but it fits with the stereotype. He tells Rachel about a love interest that was very pretty; mirroring the fact he finds her pretty. He's essentially creating a narrative to tell his victims that THEY are the reason he's going to kill them. Their mind games; and for him to make up stories to fit individuals shows he's intelligent and creative. Hands down THE BEST JOKER EVER. A Joker who's not evil because he's crazy and CAN BE redeemed, but a man who CHOOSES to act immorally and chaotically.

It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍👍😎💯

The truck shot is probably the most amazing clip of any superhero movie and that's because it's all real, they actually flipped a truck in the middle of downtown Chicago, you can look up videos of how they planned it and actually accomplished it. The attention to even the most minute things and doing them to perfection is what makes this movie the pinnacle of all superhero movies and even most movies in general. That and the actual blowing up of a hospital was cool, that shot where he shrugs at the explosion delay is all real as they only had 1 take at it.

Chris Nolan had a way of just hiring the right person for specific roles. Michael Jai is such a legit natural intimidating man, it was smart to have him (in wrestling terms) give the Joker the rub. The fears in his eyes while Joker tells his backstory. Amazing. Than another great underrated casting by having Tiny Lister (Deebo) on the Ferry boat you think he was gonna blow the innocent civilians up (because a character he mostly known for as Deebo) definitely would blow them up but they swerved us.

23:20 What’s even more fucked up is the fact that Gordon’s family was still compromised even after ALL THAT just to protect them… 25:00 and I also love how Joker tries to influence Batman in this scene in the same way he did Harvey like “…these cops are eventually gonna turn on you…” but Batman’s so godamn stubborn, literally the embodiment of justice, to the point where he’s just done talking and he just gets violent over the issue..And joker just maniacally laughs at him because he sees how crazy Batman truly is “LOOK AT YOU GO!!” It’s a classic example of Joker V Batman. Nolan nailed it forsure 👌 26:35 OOoooh and I forgot ab this dynamic as well. One of Joker’s mind games: he had his guys tell Rachel that the cops and Batman were going to have to choose between the two of them. So when Batman shows up to save Harvey he’s absolutely disgusted like “You bastards chose ME over her because I’m supposed to be the ‘important white knight and savior for Gotham’.” Sortve adds to his soreness towards Gordon and the rest of em…

Loved the reaction from Lara Croft! But also on a more serious note, I did not see anyone else mention this and it's one of my fav Lil things about the film: Regarding the Hospital scene where Joker hands Dent a revolver and presses it against his own head, Harvey actually would not have been able to shoot the Joker at all because the Joker kept his finger on the back of the hammer which would have made it impossible for the gun to actually fire even if the trigger was pulled. That darn Joker was a schemer beyond belief and he was really good at making people believe they actually had a choice.

19:48 I wondered about Rachel the first time I saw these movies, too. With repeat viewings, she's frankly just not that into Bruce from the beginning. She loves him. He's been like a brother to her, but then he left for ten years and came on like gangbusters when he returned. By the time we meet her here, she's already moved on and is falling in love with Harvey. So, at this point when it feels like she has commitment issues - she doesn't. She's thinking much more clearly than Bruce, who's sadly chasing a dead dream with her. She's committed to Harvey.
