I watched different videos in order to get the dark L sound correct but without any success, until I found yours. You made it a lot easier to get this sound right. Thank you!

You have the best tip for the dark L sound. Your first tip finally made me understand how to pronounce the sound. Every body else’s video was making me confused and I thought I had to push the whole tongue backwards and upwards and it was too hard and slow to pronounce other syllables. Lifting the tongue to roof of the mouth is easier to understand.

English With Accent Coach Nicole you don’t have a video on sentence stress, stressing the content words? Recently I found out about it but I have to think about doing it and speak slowly to do it. I asked my friends and they said I’m right but they don’t think about it when they speak. I wonder if I keep deliberately doing it for a long time then. It will come naturally to me also.

Is it corret if the back of the tongue touch the roof of the mouth or just raise it?Should the tip of the tongue touch the alveolar ?I am confused about this two question…
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole6 жыл бұрын
Great question. The tip of the tongue touches the alveolar ridge, as it also does with the light L (regular L). For the dark L, the back of the tongue also raises. It's easy to describe this, but in reality, how can you raise the back of the tongue consciously? For this reason, I usually recommend people who aren't used to pronouncing this sound to just close their mouth in order to get the back of the tongue raised. It's not technically how a native speaker would do it, but it produces a close approximation of the sound.

Find daily opportunities to speak English. If you do not live in an English speaking country, find practice partners online and in apps. You can also talk to yourself, but the key is to actually talk, not just listen.

I have a question about the L pronunciation in the middle, like these: "Novelist" "metabolism" "capitalize". It feels like they have dark L and light l at the same time. "vəl+lɪst" "bəl+ˌlɪzəm" "dəl+laɪz" why??😥
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. If I check the dictionary, it shows the L in each as ending the syllable, which makes it officially a dark L, but when I say each of these very slowly, I feel like I'm using both a dark and light L, pronouncing the little uh sound before the L, but also touching the alveolar ridge afterwards.

When pronouncing the dark L, 1. you DO NOT touch the alveolar with the tip of your tongue; 2. you DO NOT protrude your tongue between your teeth. These two movements of the tongue are irrelevant and immaterial to the pronunciation of the dark L in English.
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole6 жыл бұрын
They are helpful hints to get your tongue in the right place. If they are not exact, they are very close, close enough to help a non-native speaker create an understandable dark L, where they were not able to before. At times, striving for perfection prevents success.

I don’t think biting your tongue makes dark L sound
@EnglishWithAccentCoachNicole3 ай бұрын
No, it doesn't, but if you're struggling with curling your tongue backwards, making it sound like an R, it corrects that issue, at least temporarily until a more correct tongue position can be mastered.
