Ah, yes, the internet connection. This is exactly why I'm fanatically against cloud gaming. I see it as a threat if publishers decided that instead of retail copies of their games from now on there's only cloud gaming even at a lowest monthly fee possible. Because the internet connection is just unreliable. I really hate it when KZbinrs, especially people like Sebastian Linus say that Stadia or Nvidia can stream video game from the cloud at 1080p 60fps. Dude, you have near-industrial internet connection, of course you can stream to your PC at 1080p 60fps. I can't. And even if I could, I wouldn't. There are sharks, rodents and birds destroying fiber optics in the wild and I'm supposed to rely on a streaming service? Privacy concerns aside (though still *EXTREMELY* important), as you mentioned your ownership of the content made using these cloud services is very sketchy legally. Given the recent trend of tech companies (especially big HW tech companies) moving to a "rent" instead of a "buy" model of user ownership and fighting right to repair. Its not a big leap to assume that some of these companies would write up into their TOS that they own that data/content you wrote on it. Write an amazing novel on google docs? Google is going to come after you for royalties. Write a patent application in google docs? You better believe Google will make you sign documents saying they have a stake in that invention as well. Which is somewhat expected in alot of these free cloud services, non-commercial use is the "gentlemen's agreement" on these services. Many companies still don't have Linux versions of software. And moving to browser, would be OS independent. Granted Word, and similar, office365 or gdocs does the job.

Can someone please tell me (I don't have a driving license and basically don't know how to drive) what the benefit of manually changing the gear is (other than personal preference)? Because from my perspective it's just having to press down an additional pedal and having the different gears in a maze like order instead of a linear line but the result (gears will get changed) seems to be exactly the same. It's like pressing "Del+F12" to get to the bios screen instead of pressing "F2". So are there any benefits at all and if yes what are they?

@@SebastianHaban It's probably dumb comparsion, but you can think of manual vs automatic as Linux vs Windows, manual gives you more freedom on how to control your car, you always decide when to shift and which gear is optimal for given situation. For most people autos shift good enough, but if you enjoy driving then manuals generally are more fun, especially when you get good at rev matching, downshifting etc. Most of newer automatics also have option to select gear manually with paddles, but in the end it's the transmission which decides if it decides to obey you. Manuals are also generally cheaper to buy and mantain.

@@SebastianHaban Reliability, cheaper to repair, and you get to be a real man.
@tommyluco4 жыл бұрын
As I learned driving a manual shift (due to it being standard in driving schools in Belgium) and later on drove also automatic cars it is as follows: manual is harder to learn as you need to make sure to not blow up your transmission and it is harder for example starting uphill as you need to play with the clutch. Automatic is basically give gas and go. So the automatic transmission has the advantage of being easier and also being faster (in sports cars for example) but downsides are: worse gas mileage (if the manual shifter is driven correctly) and for example in trucks etc it’s less effective for experienced drivers due to it tending to be in the “wrong” gear for the purpose (lots of Newton meter needed for one moment, saving gas on the highway therefore earlier shifting etc) The best mix of both worlds are cars with a pedal shifter and a sport-clutch then it’s almost as instant on gas as a manual shifter plus the advantage of easy gear shifting without having to manually using the clutch but it’s not the best solution for everything

Bandwidth issues are bandwidth issues. The only way that I can see them relating to cloud computing are low bandwidth and possibly bad ping, but I really can't think of scenarios beyond cloud gaming, and no other examples were given in the video. I live in a forest. I have 4g. I get anything between 5/0.2 and 100/20 depending on my luck, the weather and the time of day. The only cloud computing related issues this can possibly cause to me personally are my backups. My upload is slow, and depending on how much I have to upload, it might take a while. My system is set to backup to google drive every weekend at night when I usually don't use the internet for anything important, so the issue is mitigated. I don't see this being a major issue for your average user. If a normie is using cloud storage, they are most likely backing up pictures and text documents. Even with a slow connection, these can be uploaded no problem. There also is no real alternative for your average person. I personally keep local and cloud backups. I could probably pester somebody I know to house a raspberry pi running some storage server at their place for offsite backup, but then I would be slowing down their connection. I also don't think this is something we should expect normies to do, just like we don't expect people to do their own plumbing beyond unclogging the sink, or doing electric work beyond changing fuses. Having the cloud service provider kick you off so you lose access to your shit is valid, but the severity varies depending on your use case. With cloud storage, depends on the service, but google drive and onedrive at least are configured to keep local and cloud copies by default. Luke brought this up in his video, but email is a great example. Almost everybody uses gmail, outlook or some similar cloud based service. I personally do use both. With email, you have the option of downloading mail to your own client, but if you use it only as a cloud service, google kicking you off for breaking their TOS could cause you some serious issues. Running your own mail server is challenging even for tech literate people, so that is out of the question for normies. The privacy complaint's are valid. With cloud storage, you can encrypt your files at your end, but that is not something I would expect normies to do. With google docs for example, you have no way of making sure google does not snoop on it, which they actually do if memory serves me right. I do somewhat agree with the dumbing down people part. Having to pay for better cloud service instead of upgrading your hardware is not really a good point without proper examples. Just like Luke's rant about cloud services, this too just felt hollow and pointless. There are real privacy concerns with cloud services and there is the issue of ownership of your own data, but this video really did not touch on any of them in any meaningful way. Cutting the comment a bit short because I really need some sleep. Might check back on it later.

Well the benefits and problems are the same as everywhere between renting and buying. Stuff you need on an everyday basis you are far better of buying but stuff you need only once in a while you are better of renting... Would you rent a car all year long from sixt (or whatever) just to get to/from work and buy groceries? No because thats insanely expensive and you're better of just buying a car for yourself. But: Would you buy a truck because you might move every 3-4 years to a new house/apartment? No. You rent it for that few days and save a lot of money. Same goes for houses/apartments. In the long run you are better of buying than renting but a lot of people are still renting because they can't afford the upfront cost... But: Would you buy a huge hall as well just because you'd might invite like 200+ people for your 50th birthday? No you rent a hall for that one evening. Same goes for cloud computing: You're always better of buying a PC that fits your everyday needs than remotely connecting to a cloud server from your phone, tablet, potatoe laptop just to write some stuff in word, watch yt and browse the web whatever. But when you need to rund that huge blender render project once you're better off spending like idk 20$ on aws compute time upload the project and have it finished in less than half an hour instead of letting your "office tier" pc you use for webbrowsing work for 7h+ or whatever.

How to stop Google from looking at your shit on Google Drive: * Mount Google Drive onto the filesystem using an open-source program * Use CryFS (or something like it) that lets you mount it as a filesystem Pro-tip: Use a 4096-bit key file, so Google can't brute-force the password

Oof too true. I see this particularly with the chromebook squad... I may take you up on your bed, go downtown (obviously when the pandemic's over) and ask people to install Ubuntu from a USB. Super simple stuff... but not many people will be able to do it I bet. I'm going to check out some more of your videos and may subscribe. Thanks bud!

Regarding the comment about automatic vs manual transmission - that seems to only be the case in places like the US. Here in South Africa, manual transmission is still far more common.

With cloud installation (or nowadays very common "distributed assets of website" , ie. js come from one external url, pictures from other, web app is running on third etc + ads from yet another place) comes insane complexity to troubleshoot, and it is out of your hands, black box like testing. Ofc with simplicity (of owning infrastructure and knowing people) comes centralized risk of things going wrong for any reason.

Oh everything is "on the cloud" nowdays, oh and zoom, if corporate executives don't use zoom then it's not serious business.
@DigitalMoonlight2 жыл бұрын
Critical to note that even 1 yr later cloud apps still largely do the processing on your machine via JavaScript anyways so they actually mostly perform worse than local native installs. We don’t even get the benefit of using cheap hardware.

I think the title is a little too broad. "Cloud computing" encompasses a lot more than the cloud services mentioned in the video, but I mostly agree with the message. Self-hosting is the antidote, but it's unfortunately out of reach for most non-techies.

The thing with losing the ability to drive a stick as being an example of technology dimming people down. It's just like yeah of course? Why would anyone wanna drive a stick, it requires more attention, that could better be spent looking out for hazards on the road. Nobody complains about people losing the knowledge base of cleaning your clothes down by the river, because it's inconvenient and we can definitely spend our time doing better things

A company I know uses cloud computing for their VMs. Instead of providing the hardware themselves or to local datacenter is all done by hp cloud.. ever since performance increase and uptime has increased and everything is WAY more reliable.

Depending on what you are running, absolutely. I host a small website on AWS. I pay maybe 10 euro a month for it due to the minimal traffic, but I don't have to worry about the hardware side and having the site consume my bandwidth. These are not really use cases for your average normie consoomer, but they are good examples of why cloud computing is gaining more ground even among tech literate people.

I see cloud storage at least as another option. If I want non-critical stuff available anywhere I go, or to make it available for multiple devices, I put that in my Dropbox. Anything else stays on my PC or NAS. But I do see the danger of people trusting these services with all their data, and how that can be disasterous.

9:02 Even if we allow all people tweak it, I don't think people can actually make it usable. I mean look at the projects such as GIMP and LibreOffice, they are still not competitive enough to their proprietary counterparts even after having the rights to tweak it according to your desire.

Do you think that conventional desktop apps - especially cross-platform - are still a viable option? It seems so much easier to write a GUI using JS and deploy on the cloud than make a local app using X tool available to Linux, Mac and Windows. Also, it would be nice to see a video talking about this

This shits all valid, but a key problem is the barrier to entry part. The govt realized fast that its much easier tool control people when they are uneducated on the tool you give them.
