Not really related to Robot Wars but my favorite moment in one of these types of shows was a BattleBots fight where one robot had a cheap kiddie rake attached to it and one of its opponents was a drone with two miniature flamethrowers on it, and it instantly immobilized the drone by smacking it out of the sky like a bug with a fly swatter. Legit the funniest shit I ever saw, I even have the youtube video of the fight bookmarked.

Great video, it's excellent to have a relative outsider to the Robot Wars controversies dive into this and offer an unbiased look. Speaking as the main admin of the Robot Wars Wiki in the current day, we knew that the unsourced claim regarding More Panda Monium was first added in 2009-2011 when there were no strict policies on information sourcing in place (this was a time when some international versions of the show such as German Robot Wars hasn't even been found in footage form yet) and the active userbase simply joined with the Panda claim as a solid fact. I'm glad that even if it was many years too late, we were at least able to reinvestigate this claim off our own backs, and that videos such as this exist to dispel the mistruth. Needless to say, there has been a greater emphasis on referencing ever since, haha

The Series 4 Heat Final between Morgue and Firestorm 2 is my benchmark that if a robots wheel base are over the pit and it can't get out, then its pitted. I've been a massive fan of Robot Wars since I watched Cassius VS Panic Attack in the Series 2 Grand Final and I've heard many interesting things about the show's history. Apparently Craig Charles asked if he could return for the reboot but was rejected. Also there was a story that a robot from Series 9 called Rusty nearly decapitated it's builders head when it's flipper fired off when it was in the pits. A fight in Series 4 saw Firestorm fight a robot called Bolt from the Blue which went to a judge's decision which favoured Firestorm, even though neither put on a good fight. But the captain of Bolt was so bitter about the loss that many years later, his wife got him a birthday cake that had an image of Bolt on it with a message saying #stillbitter. Series 6 of Robot Wars was badly affected by time slots and was shifted around for a golfing championship to take place, which resulted in a Robot Wars magazine being cancelled as it was spoiling fights that had yet to air. Battlebots had also had a major incident in which a robot called Nightmare broke it's spinner and a piece of its tooth broke out of the arena and landed into the crowd. Nobody was injured, but numerous events were cancelled afterwards. There was another incident in Battlebots with a robot called Tartar which apparently went AWOL during a safety test, caught fire and drove off a table. I could go on, but you are correct in that the Robot Wars Wiki is very thorough with its details and certainly has many interesting pages. Also there were talks that there was plans for an animated series which I personally couldn't see happening.

Thank you for the mention and shewing my snooze paper cutting. Was wild days I can tell you! A couple of things I would add. A lot of people entered because it was fun, they liked building things and they knew RW would not be a career or be around for ever. We was realistic enough to see it as just another stepping stone in life. Afterwards robots where sadly junked and we moved on to other things. Mentorn and the BBC was only in it to make money, any 'scandal' and drama only added to it, it was scripted and perhaps fixed ;o) I know this may come as a shock to most RW fans today but back then it was different. The lad who had was involved in the October 1999 accident at Elstree Studios who can't remember which robot injured him, am not surprised really, any one who has been involved in a car or motorbike accident can't remember much! BTW RW Series One was in 1997. Great video well done, you have done some home work! one last thing there's probably a video of me stealing a kiss from Phillipa some where ha, ha, haa

Thankfully all those safety issues are in the past. Lessons have been leant and combat robots are built, checked and understood better. And audience safety is number 1. Thing to remember it is a TV show, they want contriversal decisions, incidents and characters. Like with any sport, it gives the fans something to talk about after. As for judging fights, I've done it myself and I hate it. Sometimes there is nothing between them and its really hard to deicide a winner. And how I veiw the fight differs from another person. Why you have at least three judges.

Interesting video. I built a robot for series 4 and was involved behind the scenes with a few others. I used to chat with Rex about the show (and technical advice) and he was totally correct about the safety problems, Roger Plant would say the same things as did Kim Davis. I went off to do Mechanoids and life took over so never returned. As for Ed, he is a polarising character and has a tendency to say things without thinking but he has a passion for the sport and I believe has been one of the many people that has kept the sport alive, a classic example being that I recently bumped into him for the first time in many years (I think the last time was at Mechanoids, a show that many competitors have fond memories of) and said “Hi Ed I haven’t seen you since Mechanoids” to which he relied “that was a shit show” and turned his back on me (I thought, yep you haven’t changed and chuckled to myself). But that is him and his belief in what he does and the sport is a good thing and I hope Ed and many people keep at it, I might even get the old fighter up snd running again.
@cdname47 Жыл бұрын
The fact your story defending him is yet another story of him being a rude arsehole doesn't paint him in a better light lol Personally I think the sport would be a better place without his shit-housery and his boring block on wheels. If he'd used that creativity to make something interesting to watch, fine, there are other jerks in the sport that at least have cool robots to watch But he bought a block on wheels, acted like it was the second coming and doubled down when the production made clear that they wanted more entertaining robots by writing rules to try and ensure rambots were phased out. Which he then used technicalities to get out of. Those kinda people.....we could do without.

Something "similar" to the tornado situation happened in battlebots. It was the Hydra vs Huge fight, huge being a wide box with vertical spinner in the middle, on two wheels close to the size of wagon wheels, which gave huge the advantage with its ability to hit robots on the top with its bar due the wheels giving huge a lot of height. while hydra is simply a powerful flipper. Before the match Hydra decided to make a metal frame (not 360 protection just protected the front of their bot) that attached to the front of their bot so that huge couldnt hit them, after huge took a few attempts of hitting hydra, hydra managed to pin huge to the corner, without actually *touching* huge, which allowed hydra to just keep huge there, the refs did try to tell the hydra team about it but the hydra team just replied with "but we're not touching them" or something along the lines of that, which confused the refs because they were technicality following the rules, sonce the rules didnt really go that much into detail about it. Hydra won that fight but lost a lot of respect after that, but bettlebots made some small adjustments to the rules to make sure nothing like that happened again.

Also quite a few who worked with Mark and his group Survival research labs (think robot wars with giant machines, no rules or competitive element) followed his example and never entered, so by causing legal drama they basically isolated someone who would be awesome if involved, the only SRL associated person who is involved in Battlebots is Alexander Rose of the Bronco team who works with SRL as a part time volunteer.

Both are hard to find concrete information or footage but you’re clearly one who enjoys a bit of digging for the good stuff 😅 Teams behind the machines little blue engine and maximus definitely have some malicious stories behind them forgotten to time. Loved this video, was nice to get some clarity on the injuries in series three as I’d tried to go down that rabbit hole a few years back and simply didn’t know where to look. Great video! You got a sub from a bot fan who happens to like all the other stuff you talk about too 😅

I know that Team Circuit Breaker was notorious for being mischievous brats in the pits during the old show airing, but what kind of dirt did people have on Team Gladiator?

1: The near-decapitation incident is something we're aware of even here in California, so it's certainly not a hushed-up thing. It's probably just as well that the footage hasn't surfaced, though; it sounds kind of troubling. 2: Takeshi's Castle is known here as MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge). I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it; it's hilarious!

“Spending hundreds of pounds on your robot” oh I wish it was that cheap. Average heavyweight robot in battlebots / robot wars is 20,000 USD. My wallet hurts from competing lol

Unexpected and interesting topic. I never realized there was so much going on behind the scenes. I really miss a show like robot wars. A safe show then :)

Battlebots (an offshoot of robot wars) has been going strong for the last few years, being picked up by both network and cable television. The new series starts in January and the official Battlebots youtube channel hosts a lot of free fights to watch!

Craig Charles smoking crack in a taxi with some jazz mags was one of the strangest celebrity downfall stories of my youth. Always seemed a bit unfair you'd get a son and dad from Bradford going up against some titanium monster from somewhere like Cambridge uni

As a kid in Canada, I don't ever recall seeing the first 3 or so seasons. To me, it was always just a robot fighting show. I had no idea untill all these years later that it kind of started out with American Gladiator type events.

Never heard of your channel, but a Yorkshire accent with Robot Wars? Yeah I'll subscribe
