Colin Baker Counterplay is an important part of Robot Wars. Tornado wasn't the first to have an attachment designed to beat a specific kind of bot, and certainly wasn't the last. Fun fact: Tornado did have an Anti-Hypnodisc attachment too, but it wasn't used. It was basically a big tyre around the whole machine. Probably banned for being too purely defensive. So sad to hear that Robot Wars has been axed again to "make way for new programmes" In the meantime, I reckon there are a few other robots I would add to the honourable mentions: Mortis - One of the first robots to use both caterpillar tracks and a dual-weapon synergy of an axe and a lifter, inspiring later robots like Vercingetorix (later Comangetorix) and Judge Shred 2 (later Judge Shred 2.5), its rapid-fire axe proved a very effective weapon in the early days of Robot Wars Roadblock - Winners of Series 1, Roadblock helped popularize the "cheese wedge" chassis which proved extremely useful for pushing other robots around and tipping them over, as it managed to do with Killertron, Recyclopse (later Cassius) and Robot The Bruce (later Chaos and Chaos 2) Pussycat - Arguably the hardest robot to immobilize, Pussycat's unique design allowed it to right itself from every angle imaginable, and the custom-made circular saw could do some serious damage - as evidenced when they took 2nd place in Series 4, with Chaos 2's team captain George Francis stating that "Pussycat did the most damage to my robot in any fight" Eruption - Apollo may have had a formidable flipper in Series 8, but Eruption's flipping power in Series 10 was truly awe-inspiring. Master tacticians, they managed to stand up to Carbide's onslaught in the Series 10 grand final, and walk away with a victory Gemini - The first clusterbot to compete in Robot Wars, Gemini was a definite threat to most other robots due to its ability to to swarm other competitors. Each robot was armed with a powerful pneumatic flipper Stinger - Armed with one of the most devastating bludgeoning weapons in Robot Wars, Stinger was truly designed around its mace - even the batteries, housed inside giant custom wheels, swung around to add their weight to each blow. Combined with the ability to run at pretty much any angle, the robot was a real force to be reckoned with, taking 3rd place in Series 4

@digitaldeathsquid34484 жыл бұрын
Hypno-Disc also achieved the same feat as Carbide, although Carbide actually went ahead and won the show. I think it mostly comes down to staying power and recognizable design. The reboot sadly didn't last all that long to give us many true celebrities of the new era like the original run; consider the sheer innovation the Big 3 of Hypno-Disc, Razer and Chaos 2 brought to the table - seeing that kind of power for the first time vs seeing the bar raised for that power in a smaller window is likely to have more people remembering the first time over the current state. Had it gone on longer, Carbide and Eruption would have undoubtedly been at the fore of everyone's minds, likely along with Pulsar/Magnetar, Thor and Gabriel

@digitaldeathsquid34486 жыл бұрын
TeamScrewUp It's one of the more controversial sticking points of Series 6 - the grand final match between Tornado and reigning champions Razer. The Tornado team decided to modify their robot with a large wire frame housing a bar spinner. This frame stretched out well beyond Tornado's standard dimensions, which meant that Razer's crushing beak/arm wouldn't be able to get at Tornado. The judges allowed it, and in response, Razer added a hook to their crushing arm with the intention of trying to lift Tornado by the added framework. While Razer had a hard time lifting or crushing Tornado, the framework gave Tornado extra reach to repeatedly shunt and slam Razer into the arena side walls (at one point Razer got stuck in the side wall itself and the neutral house robot Refbot managed to free Razer after a while) - the framework also made it much more difficult to eliminate Tornado by feeding it to the Pit Of Oblivion (a remotely activated trapdoor). Tornado inevitably won the match, and by extension, the Series 6 championship title. My take on all this? Combatants in Robot Wars and other robot combat shows such as Robot Combat League and BattleBots have entered the arena with modifications before - in particular modifications specifically designed with certain competitors in mind (such as Ghost Raptor's "De-icer" polearm added before its fight with Ice Wave in Series 6 of BattleBots), but these modifications have not made the combatants unbeatable because of it - the reason I use the example I gave is because Ice Wave still could have potentially out-manoeuvred Ghost Raptor. Tornado's modification created a 360-degree barrier to keep Razer at bay with reach to provide an advantage I perceive as inherently unfair, with the bar spinner acting as a very flimsy justification for the framework. IMO the judging panel should have either demanded that the framework be much shorter than it was, or disallowed it entirely.

Sorry, but Carbide should've been way closer to #1 than #8. I mean it's the only robot to make 3 consecutive Grand Finals, winning one of them in the process, and out of it's 5 defeats only one of them was via knockout.
@NoobsailerRBH6 жыл бұрын
Hypno-disc also made 3 consecutive grand finals [3,4,5], and Firestorm made 3 grand finals as well [3,5,6]. Carbide is the only "modern" robot to have do so, but it did happen back in the day.
@Sh0tgunJust1ce6 жыл бұрын
When he says grand finals, he means the actual final battle as well. Firestorm never made it to the final battle (came third three times), and Hypnodisc only did it once in Series 3, where it lost to Chaos 2.
@NoobsailerRBH6 жыл бұрын
Be that as it may, this video is on the subject of badass robots. So explain this: In 2003 [Extreme 2] Firestorm IV *successfully* flipped Mr Psycho - who weighed 750kg. In 2017, [Series 10 {Special}] Apollo *almost* flipped Sir Killalot, who weighs 741kg. Firestorm has won 23 battles in the UK Championships, the most of ANY competitor, ever. Firestorm only gets an honourable mention, yet its rival Panic Attack is placed #5. WTF?!?
@shadow-scope-fsm71656 жыл бұрын
Whilst I would’ve also placed Firestorm above Panic Attack (given it’s more consistent success record), you gotta take into consideration how much of a big impact Panic Attack left when it first appeared. I mean, in Series 2 they had somewhat of an underdog story, being this school charity entry that never expected to make it out of the heats, but with clever driving and a powerful robot they made it all the way, even beating the competition favourites (Mortis and Cassius). It was the little robot that could. Add to that the fact that Kim Davies always came across as a modest chap who cared more about being entertaining than winning, and it’s easy to see why Panic Attack became such a firm crowd favourite. Though I’d still consider Firestorm to be the best robot that never won a series.

Not a bad list, but I wonder why Carbide was so low (it was the most-consistently dominant robot in the show's history, being in ALL THREE Grand Final fights of the three series it appeared in) and why Bigger Brother was so high (it was a very good machine with a very good driver, but the best it ever managed was a single runners-up position, while you put it above several champions). I'm willing to bet that Conquering Clown, Falcon, Plunderbird, Blue, Bluemax, Diotoir, Nemesis, Donald Thump, and Sir Chromalot would also be on that list.

My favorite TV show from both my childhood and when it came back in 2016, but the dinosaur beeb cancelled it for an excuse that is seriously shortsighted. Good to see Behemoth on the honours list and I would've thought Storm 2 would’ve been mentioned, since that's the only machine to OOTA another robot without using a weapon!

Robot Combat shows had already gained recognition within the USA with their revival of Battlebots and China with King of Bots and This is Fighting Robots. I felt that the BBC really missed an opportunity to take Robot Wars even further. At least some of the British bots had been competing overseas from Team Carbide's Tungsten which won This is Fighting Robots to Tom Brewster's Monsoon (competed with Tauron in Series 9 & 10) which reached the top eight during the 2018 campaign of Battlebots.

I needed to see one of the best in the world, and the one at the end of the video Seems to be of that kind of caliber

My favourite robots: Razer, Carbide, Bigger Brother, Mortis, Thermidor 2 and Plunderbird Favourite house robots: SGT Bash, Dead Metal and Sir Killalot

Razer at the top was above the meta. While most combatants chose a wedge design with some sort of flipper, Razer chose to dissect. I still remember Matilda getting owned by that bird-like bot. Hypno Disk was definitely a joy in the ring too. So much destruction. But nothing compares to the new era of robotic combat like the robots from Battlebots. Its crazy how a century or two impacts the evolution in a grand way.

Wheely Big Cheese should’ve been an honourable mention

Was a little disappointed to see Sgt. Bash not even make the list. I mean, it's got a goddamn flamethrower, and had one of the longest-running rivalries in Robot Wars against the hilariously flammable Diotoir.
@owain22226 жыл бұрын
Firestorm and Behemoth reduced to the honorable mentions and the lack of robots like Pussycat, Eruption, Storm 2, Gabriel, Terrorhurtz or any other all star robots is whats making this list lackluster. i get it theres only 10 spaces, but still theres better robots that should have been on the list

Would've been cool to have this be competitors only. I'd add Stinger and shift Cassius from HM to a place on the list.

I'm sorry, but Diotoir should have been somewhere on that list. It was brilliant and one of the most memorable robots in the series.

I’m sure others have probably commented this, but does Watchmojo plan on doing a Battlebots list?

Behemoth are the champions of missing out. I've been following robot wars since I was 5 years old. They held the champions belt but following that they never had much luck and I think placing them as an honorable mention is just another example as to how they missed out.

Razer vs tornado was a feud worth watching. shame we never got to see a fatal 4 way between Chaos 2, hynodisc, tornado and Razer. That would have been the perfect ending to Robot Wars. Now do a most destroyed robots from Robot Wars. My bet Dioitoir is in the top 3.
@HonestWatchReviewsHWR6 жыл бұрын
Pretty good list. But what about Mortis? Back in the day it was deadly. It had a lot of firsts too. It was the first robot to be made of titanium. The first to have tracks. As well as the most expensive robot at the time.

Sir killalot did get flipped by Apollo as well as Matilda, not sure if that happened at the time of this vid but the clip was shown
